This is a very personal piece.
Generally I like to leave all my work undefined so that the viewer
can look at the work and define it from their perspective. Often this piece gets defined as pertaining solely to a
relationship between lovers. In actuality, the work is about insecurity as it pertains to seeking ones 'dreams'.
It's about how small relationships can seem when one is a creature of 'driven' habit. And yet, it reflects how
important relationships truly are to an artist, or to everyone who attempts to make a dream into reality.
The couple is represented as a small portion of the work for that reason. The pair gaze out at the city lights
(which represent the glare of success...their hopes..their aspirations), they
look upon it together. That is the hopeful part. But I leave it at that, because I don't want to
define whether they make it together or not. This is for the viewer to decide (depending on
their own experiences). The sun has taken leave. Now the diligent moon arises. The evening
hours are the hours of diligence since they go beyond the allotted 'work hours' of a normal day.
The moon is whimsical in showing it's 'face' to the couple, revealing the dreams of a million
lovers, enemies, friends, conquerors. The moon has seen this couple many times before
( in one form or another). It's hushed look is for the respect and seriousness of creating a dream,
and pursuing that dream. The sky is somewhat odd (part turmoil, part warmth/ these are portions
of survival). Jo-Ellen's inspiration came from personal quests, and that of those who have gone
before, and will after. The title Decrescent came from the term for a waning moon, or moon
that is becoming less by gradual diminution. In many ways, this is what occurs between people
when one is determined to be almost singularly ambitious. It's not an easy place to be. Thus, the
waning of the moon is about how one can tear themselves apart over large aspirations. Then
again, who gets to see such a moon, but those who would dare?. The work, is meant to reflect
the rare moments of solace that a dreamer is afforded by those who would have them and support their efforts.
And it also plays upon the concept that dreams should be shared by the dreamer. In this exchange, all parties
receive and reflect hope through struggle. Please feel free to contact/question/comment the artist via :
