VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!! Hurricane Fran caused some major flood damage to the Appalachian Trail along the C&O Canal towpath near Harpers Ferry, W.Va. The Trail is currently open, but much work is needed to restore it and the Canal to their prior condition. The Appalachian Trail Conference, in cooperation with the National Park Service, is looking for volunteers to assist with this project. Volunteers who sign up for one or more five-day sessions receive free lodging and meals and earn a special crew T-shirt. Persons 18 or older are welcome. Experience is helpful but not required. Enthusiasm, good health, physical vigor, and adaptability are essential. Participants must be willing to follow the instructions of ATC's crew leader and the NPS-approved safety rules on the work site. Come prepared, dressed in long pants and heavy work boots, with leather gloves and a water bottle. Parking is available in the main parking lot at Harpers Ferry Historical Park and shuttle buses run every 10-15 minutes. You must declare your intent to work on the C&O canal at the entrance station in order to have the usual fee waived.
