Herbert Anton Schneider was born August 7, 1922 to Dr. Sigfried
Schneider and Renee Tolnai in Vienna, Austria. He grew up in Weiner
Neustadt, and as a young man studied at Robert's College in Istanbul.
In 1939 he escaped to the USA, was drafted into Army Engineering Core
and sent to Massachusetts Institute of Technology to learn radio
communications. After the war he completed his Electrical Engineering
degrees at MIT and joined Bell Telephone Laboratories, where his
creativity lead to 26 patents and several awards. Herb married Doris
Marie Schanzer Paterson whom he met in New York through mutual friends
from Vienna. As a member of the Ski Patrol for 43 years he combined
his enjoyment of skiing and engineering skills by introducing radios.
He was National Communications Advisor for 25 years. In 1966, Herb
volunteered for a seminal contemporary art event, Nine Evenings:
Theatre and Engineering. The first event of its kind, it was a
weeklong series of art, dance and music performances. Today, it is
considered a benchmark for artists working with technology. In
retirement Herb and Doris moved to Boulder's Frasier Meadows
Retirement Community, where Herb helped establish the recycling
program. Herb passed away on May 6, 2009, in Boulder, Colorado. He was
