MIDDLETOWN VARSITY UPENDS MONOCACY; LINGANORE WINS TWO IN OT - 03/03/01

Middletown made good use of the foul line to post an important 29-27 varsity win against Monocacy. The Knights were 15-of-20 from the charity stripe and never trailed in the contest. Zach Miss led the Knights with nine points (7-9 from the line) while Joe Keimig added eight (6-8 from the line). Josh Alderson led Monocacy with nine points and was also a major force on the boards.

Monocacy pulled away in the fourth quarter of the jayvee game to post a 42-35 victory. Brad Betson had 10 points for Monocacy while Patrick Uthe poured in 16 and Gordon Selckmann eight. Patrick Carney led Middletown with seven points.

Linganore's jayvees erased a 25-point second period deficit and went two overtimes to preserve their undefeated regular season with a 59-51 thriller against Windsor Knolls. Jon Sweadner poured in 28 points and Paul Rhoades added 12 for the Lancers, who trailed 31-11 at halftime. Gregory Price and Jordan Snowden led the Hawks with 12 points each.

The Lancers also came from 12 points down in the second half of the varsity game to trim Windsor Knolls in overtime 50-49. Josh Young had 17 points and Isiah Brightful added 16 for the winners. Ryan Brandenburg had a game-high 21 points for Windsor Knolls.

St. John's took control early and coasted to a 62-31 varsity win over Catoctin. Thomas Scholtes had 11 points for the winners while Philip Carter, Justin Harrison, Justin Moser and Steven Keser all added eight points. Derrick Beard had eight points for Catoctin.

The Vikings broke open a close game in the second half to post a 43-32 jayvee win. Jonathan Mahlandt had 12 points for the winners. Ben Rose led Catoctin with 12 points and Michael Topper connected for 10.

POOLESVILLE PICKS UP IMPORTANT SWEEP AGAINST BC - 03/02/01

Poolesville used a 17-2 blitz in the third quarter to defeat Ballenger Creek's varsity. The Indians were led by Cory Christman with 14 points. Adam Powell and Gregory Brooks added eight points each. Corey Rhodes had eight points to lead Ballenger.

Brandon Moore triggered a 10-0 in the second quarter as Poolesville also won the jayvee game 45-34. Moore finished with a team-high 11 points while Jared Christman added 10 and Tyler Bierly nine. The Bulldogs were led by Michael Clementson with 10 points.

LINGANORE JAYVEES CLINCH; BALLENGER GAINS SPLIT - 03/01/01

Eighteen was the key number for Linganore as Jon Sweadner had 18 points in leading the Lancers to their 18th League win without a loss, a 42-30 decision against Ballenger Creek. The win sealed the CMC jayvee title and #1 tournament seed for the Lancers. Mike Herrod added six points for the Lancers. Michael Clementson had a team-high nine points for the Bulldogs.

Ballenger won the varsity game 36-32. Cory Rhodes led the way with 17 points while Isiah Brightful netted 10 points for Linganore.

WF, ST. JOHN'S SWEEP; WALKERSVILLE SURVIVES SCARE - 02/28/01

West Frederick varsity won it's 19th game of the year without a loss in beating Ballenger Creek 49-30. Luther Weedon had 15 points and Quenton Beard netted ten points for the Cadets, who ran out to a 28-13 lead at the half. Cory Rhodes led Ballenger with nine points.

The Cadets' jayvee got off to a 15-2 start and coasted to a 50-27 win against a BC team that had won 10 of 11 previous starts. Qmonte Matheny had a team-high 14 points for West Frederick while Malcom Kattes added 11 points.

Walkersville's varsity survived a scare as Windsor Knolls made a big comeback in the second half before falling 43-42. Brandon Geppert and Chris Hannigan had 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Lions. Jason Butts and Ryan Brandenburg each had 14 points in a losing cause.

Windsor Knolls doubled up the Lions in the opener 53-21. Steve Anderson led a balanced Hawks scoring attack with 12 points while Michael Hall contributed nine points and Matthew Deadrick eight. Michael Sellers and Devon Trout had five points apiece for the Lions.

St. John's varsity also had a close call as Catoctin vied for it's first win of the year. Tied at 34 after regulation, the Vikings dominated the overtime period 11-0 for a 45-34 triumph. The Vikings had three players in double figures - Ben Hose (13), Jair Brady (11) and Justin Moser (11). Dan Duranko had 10 points for the Cougars.

In the jayvee game, St. John's ran to a 13-3 first-quarter lead and never trailed, winning 39-27. The Vikings were led by Todd Steber with nine points, John Magro with eight and Andrew Murphy with six. Michael Topper led Catoctin with a game-high 11 points.

COLSTON FREE THROWS GIVE MSD SECOND VARSITY WIN - 02/26/01

Martise Colston was fouled as time expired and hit two free throws that gave MSD a 30-28 victory over Catoctin's varsity. The Cougars had tied the game seconds earlier. Davon Cook's 12 points led the winners while Luke Bumgardner led the Cougars.

WALKERSVILLE, BRUNSWICK PUT WRAPS ON MVAL CROWNS - 02/25/01

Walkersville had to work overtime to do it, but clinched the MVAL varsity and #2 tournament seed with a 48-39 win over homestanding Poolesville. Tim Abercrombie hit a three-pointer with 3.2 seconds left in regulation to send the game into OT where the Lions outscored the hosts 9-0. Brandon Geppert led the Lions with 23 points while Chris Hannigan added 11. Poolesville was led by Adam Powell with 12 points and Cory Christman chipped in with 11.

Poolesville raced to a 17-4 lead in the jayvee game and held on for a 33-27 victory. Kyle Wood, Brandon Moore and Zach Stowers all had six points apiece for the Indians. Bruce Gaines scored all seven of his Walkersville team-high seven points in the fourth period to lead the comeback effort.

Brunswick sealed the MVAL jayvee championship with a 37-30 win against St. John's. The Railroaders trailed 20-14 at the half, but rallied on the strength of 13-of-16 foul shooting. Aaron Main had 10 points for the Railroaders while teammates Brandon Smith and Jesse Tome added five each. Jonathan Mahlandt had seven points to lead the Vikings with Matt Stephey and Chris Pully contributing six apiece.

Jair Brady scored a game-high 17 points to lead St. John's to a 48-33 win in the nightcap. Brian Keeney topped all Railroader scorers with 11 points.

Middletown picked up an important win toward seeding in the varsity tournament, 44-25 over Ballenger Creek. The Knights are still in the running for a #3 or #4 seed which carries a first-round bye. Joe Keimig netted 17 points for Middletown and Zach Miss knocked down 13 points. Cory Rhodes led the Bulldogs with eight points.

Ballenger shut the door on the Knights in the jayvee game 44-8. Twelve BC players scored, led by Danny Edwards with eight points and Danny Reed with six.

WEST FREDERICK COASTS PAST CATOCTIN - 02/24/01

West Frederick's jayvees steadily increased a 19-12 halftime lead to a final 46-28 margin against Catoctin. Qmonte Matheny and Malcom Stringer collected 13 points apiece for the Cadets while Joshua Chmelik led the Cougars with seven points.

The Cadets won the varsity game 64-26 to go to 18-0 on the season.

WALKERSVILLE ONE STEP AWAY FROM MVAL VARSITY TITLE - 02/21/01

Walkersville avenged an earlier one-point loss and came within one game of locking up the MVAL varsity championship with a 59-51 triumph over St. John's. Chris Hannigan and Brandon Geppert tallied 20 and 14 points, respectively, for the Lions. Justin Harrison netted 14 points and Jair Brady 12 for the Vikings.

For the second time in as many games, the Lions' jayvees took a one-point decision from St. John's, 29-28. Nick DeCarlo had a game-high 12 points for Walkersville, including a three-pointer that tied the game late in the fourth period. Devin Trout hit a free throw that won it for the Lions. Daniel Lagdon led a balanced Vikings scoring attack with seven points while Todd Steber added six points.

CADETS ADD TOP TOURNAMENT SEED TO LAURELS - 02/20/01

A day after clinching the CMC division regular season title, West Frederick sealed the top seed for the year-end tournament and went to 17-0 with a 52-36 victory over Ballenger Creek.

The Cadets got 19 points from Luther Weedon, 16 in the first half including a long-range three-point buzzer-beater just before intermission. Paul Smith and Quenton Beard added 10 points each for the winners. Cory Rhodes notched 10 points and Kenny Houck added six for Ballenger.

CADETS LOCK UP MVAL VARSITY TITLE - 02/19/01

West Frederick won for the third time in as many days, went to 16-0 on the year and clinched the CMC regular season varsity title with a 47-43 triumph at Poolesville. Quenton Beard paced the winners with 20 points while Luther Weedon contributed 15 points. Freddie Leighton had a team-high 12 points for Poolesville while Corey Christman added 11 and Adam Powell 10.

Poolesville won a down-to-the-wire jayvee contest 41-33 with Tyler Bierly providing much of the heroics with a game-high 18 points. West Frederick was led by Malcom Stringer with 11 points and Qmonte Mattheny with 10 numbers.

Linganore's jayvees raced to their 17th win without a loss, doubling up Middletown 53-21. Jon Sweadner led the Lancers with 15 points while Andrew Rhoades notched 10 points. Patrick Carney and Eric Dempsey netted five points each for the Knights.

Middletown rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to win the varsity contest 34-26. Mike Holda had 10 points to lead the winners. Isiah Brightful knocked down eight points for Linganore.

POOLESVILLE SWEEPS, THREE OTHER TWINSBILLS END IN SPLITS - 02/18/01

Poolesville bolted to a 19-7 lead after one quarter and went on to defeat Catoctin's varsity 63-32. Cory Christman led the Indians with 11 points and Ryan Lawrence chipped in with nine. Catoctin was led by Dan Duranko with 11 points and Derrick Beard with seven.

The Indians also got out quick in the jayvee game, leading 24-3 at the half. But Catoctin came back in the second half before falling 32-22. Jay Lowe and Jared Christman scored six points each for Poolesville while Robert Tedeschi and Zack Stowers nailed five each. Mike Topper paced the Cougars with six points; Ben Rose and Josh Chmelik netted five apiece.

West Frederick's varsity continued their unbeaten ways with a 50-37 victory over Windsor Knolls. The Cadets jumped out to a 19-0 lead and were in control throughout as Luther Weedon knocked down 24 points and Quenton Beard added 16. Justin Short had nine to lead the Hawks.

Windsor Knolls Hawks raced to a 15-3 first- quarter lead and went on to win the jayvee tilt 49-34. Steve Anderson paced the Hawks with a double-double (14 points, 13 rebounds). Jordan Snowdon had a strong game finishing with 10 for the Hawks. The Cadets were paced by Christian Preston with nine tallies.

Linganore's jayvee's won their 16th game without a loss, doubling up St. John's 60-29. Jay Greene had 16 points while Jon Sweadner and Chris Rich poured in 12 each for the Lancers. Chaz Remus led St. John's scorers with eight points.

Jair Brady poured in 17 points to lead the Vikings to a 40-28 victory in the varsity game. Isiah Brightful led Linganore with 10 points.

Brunswick all but locked up the MVAL jayvee regular season title with a 38-29 win against rival Middletown. Three players had nine points each for the Railroaders - Chris Rucker, Chris Papanicolas and Eric Zwiksky. Patrick Carney also had nine to lead the Knights in scoring.

Middletown won the varsity contest 42-28 with three players in double digits - Zach Miss with 14 points, Joe Keimig with 11 and Wesley Bidle also with 11 points. Alex Papanicolas netted nine points for Brunswick.

UNBEATENS ROLL, MONOCACY SWEEPS POOLESVILLE - 02/17/01

Luther Weedon and Quenton Beard outscored Linganore by themselves with 18 and 16 points, respectively, as West Frederick went to 14-0 on the season with a 58-32 win. Isiah Brightful led the Lancers with nine points.

Linganore's jayvees moved to 15-0, making a 21-12 halftime lead stand up for a 44-38 triumph. Jon Sweadner had 11 points and Michael Herrod added 10 for the winners. Malcom Stringer and Qmonte Matheny both netted 10 points for the Cadets.

Monocacy avenged an earlier one-point varsity loss to Poolesville with a 46-39 home win. Monocacy jumped out to a 20-6 lead after one quarter and entered the fourth quarter with a 14-point bulge. Poolesville cut the lead to four. Monocacy hit seven three-pointers against Poolesville's zone defense. Anthony Blackwood led Monocacy with 14 points while Deke Gaeng chipped in with nine. Cory Christman led Poolesville with 14 points and Freddie Leighton added 10 points.

The Mustangs took the opener 41-37. Poolesville led at the half 21-15, but Monocacy outscored Poolesville 12-6 in the final quarter to come from behind. Matty Foley led Monocacy with 12 points while Patrick Uthe added 11 and Gordon Selckmann nine. Brandon Moore led Poolesville with 12 points.

DIVISION LEADERS PICK UP WINS, WK SNAPS MSD STREAK - 02/14/01

Walkersville got 17 points from Tim Abercrombie and 10 from Brandon Geppert to take a 52-30 varsity decision against Linganore. Joshua Young led the Lancers with nine points.

Linganore dashed to a 24-7 halftime lead in the opener and remained unbeaten with a 41-21 win over the Lions. Jon Sweadner had 12 points to lead a balanced winner's scoring attack while Michael Herrod netted eight points. Joseph Reilly led the hosts with eight markers.

Middletown's Zach Miss held Jair Brady of St. John's to just four points through three quarters and tossed in a game-high 15 points, leading the Knights to a 40-31 varsity win. Joe Kiemig added 10 points for Middletown. For St. John's, Brady finished with nine.

St. John's overcame a three-point halftime deficit to beat Middletown in the jayvee game 35-32. Patrick Carney lead all scorers with 13 points while Eric Dempsey added six for the Knights. St. John's was lead by Matt Stephey with 11 numbers and Jon Mahlandt added six. St. John's was 17 for 28 from the free throw line.

Windsor Knolls snapped a modest MSD win streak by defeating the Orioles 36-30 in jayvee play. Davon Cook again led the O's with 14 points while the Hawks' Steve Anderson netted a team-high nine.

STRONG SECOND HALVES GIVE BC SWEEP - 02/13/01

Ballenger Creek's varsity broke away from a 21-16 halftime lead to record a 45-21 win over Catoctin in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Knott Arena on the campus of Mount St. Mary's College. Cory Rhodes had a game-high 14 points for the winners and Luke Bumgardner had 10 for the Cougars.

The jayvee game was similar to the nightcap as Ballenger led by just four, 26-22, at intermission before taking charge for a 45-29 victory. For BC, Danny Edwards offered up 10 points with Kevin Henry and Randy Smedley adding eight each. Josh Chmelik paced Catoctin with nine points.

MSD OUTLASTS BRUNSWICK VARSITY - 02/12/01

Davon Cook led a balanced MSD scoring attack with 14 points as the Orioles took a 38-27 verdict against Brunswick's varsity. Brian Keeney had 13 points to lead the Railroaders.

UNBEATENS CONTINUE TO ROLL; BRUNSWICK JAYVEES PULL OFF UPSET - 02/11/01

Linganore's jayvees rolled to 13-0 with a 45-31 victory over Monocacy. Jon Sweadner and Jay Greene had 17 and 16 points, respectively, for the Lancers. Gordon Selckmann netted nine points for the Mustangs while Matty Foley added seven points.

Monocacy nipped the Lancers in the varsity contest 36-34. Anthony Blackwood had a game-high 19 markers for the Mustangs while Josh Young had nine points, Isiah Brightful eight and Mark Trammell seven for Linganore.

Brunswick's javyees became only the second MVAL team to beat a CMC opponent this season with a 36-34 upset win over West Frederick. Aaron Main led the winners, who came from behind in the fourth quarter, with 13 points. Malcolm Kattes led the Cadets with 16 points.

West Frederick went to 13-0 in the varsity game with a 50-30 victory, pulling away from a 25-18 halftime edge. Luther Weedon had 17 points while Quenton Beard contributed 15 and Corey Dorsey 10 for West Frederick. Billy Bernard netted 15 points for the Railroaders.

Steve Anderson had 19 points and Matthew Deadrick added 12 as Windsor Knolls' jayvees handled Poolesville 53-34. The Hawks led by 22 after three periods, but Poolesville got back to within eight points before WK regained control. Brandon Moore led the Indians with 10 points.

Poolesville won the nightcap 53-41, getting 15 points from Freddie Leighton and 10 from Gregory Brooks. Ryan Brandenburg, James Pierce and Daniel Orrison each had eight points for the Hawks.

WEST FREDERICK VARSITY GOES TWO OT'S TO STAY UNBEATEN - 02/10/01

West Frederick outscored Walkersville in the second overtime period 13-4 to post a 61-52 victory and keep its' unbeaten string intact. The Lions used 18-of-26 foul shooting to stay close. Seven players scored in double figures for the game, led by Luther Weedon's 22 points. Corey Dorsey added 12 points and Quenton Beard totalled 15 for the winners. Dave Berry (14), Brandon Geppert (13), Alex Edgley (11) and Chris Hannigan (10) each nailed twin-digits for the Lions.

The Cadets won the opener 41-32, coasting after an 18-9 advantage at the half. Malcom Stringer and Malcom Kattes had ten points each for the Cadets while Nicholas DeCarlo had nine points to lead the Lions.

Monocacy's jayvees lead at the half 19-11, but Catoctin scored eight straight points to tie their contest. Monocacy then scored the final seven points of the quarter to take the lead for good and posted a 39-33 victory. The Mustangs had Pat Uthe and Gordon Selckmann lead their team with nine points each. Catoctin had Michael Topper leading the way with 10 points and Cory Myers helping with nine.

The Mustangs' varsity used the three ball and good foul shooting to win the nightcap 57-33. Eight three-pointers rained down on the Cougars zone defense, then Monocacy made 14 of 22 free throw attempts. The game was still in reach at the half with the Mustangs leading 23-17, but Catoctin was outscored 15-8 in the third quarter. John Truxillo had nine points for the winners with John Freed, Robert Bromfield and Anthony Blackwood adding eight points each. For Catoctin, Dan Duranko had a season-high 13 points.

GEPPERT LEADS LIONS TO SPLIT WITH BALLENGER - 02/08/01

Branden Geppert had 21 points, including a 15-of-16 performance from the foul line, to lead Walkersville's varsity past Ballenger 58-47. Geppert made 11 foul shots in a row at one point. Dave Berry added 14 points for the winners while Marvin Stanton and Cory Rhodes had nine and seven points, respectively, for the hosts.

In the jayvee game, Ballenger defeated Walkersvile 35-11. Danny Edwards led the Bulldogs with seven points and Nick Decarlo and Devin Trout each had three points for the Lions.

WALKERSVILLE VARSITY, WK JAYVEES RUN AND HIDE - 02/07/01

Walkersville placed three varsity players in double figures in beating Brunswick 55-40. Dave Berry had 18 points, Brandon Geppert 14 and Chris Hannigan 12 for the winners. Billy Bernard had 13 points for Brunswick.

The Railroaders picked up a big 52-41 win in the MVAL jayvee race. Chris Papanicolas and Aaron Main each had 12 points for the Railroaders while Joseph Reilly threw in a dozen in a losing cause.

Windsor Knolls' jayvees broke open a close game in the second half for a 49-24 decision over Poolesville. The Indians trailed 14-3 after the first quarter but stormed back to cut the lead to 18-13 at the half. The Hawks' offense kicked in for the second half, scoring 30 points. The Hawks were led by Steve Anderson with 14 points and Matt Deadrick with nine. Zach Stowers led the Indians with eight points.

Freddie Leighton had 17 points to lead Poolesville to a 45-38 win in the nightcap. Justin Short netted 13 points and James Pierce contributed nine for Windsor Knolls.

MSD doubled up Ballenger Creek 35-15 as Martise Colston led the team with 11 points. Francis Steele added eight points for the winners. Kevin Henry had six points to lead Ballenger Creek.

LINGANORE, MONOCACY, POOLESVILLE MAKE IT A CMC SWEEP - 02/04/01

Linganore added one more to it's unbeaten string in jayvee play with a 48-32 win over Brunswick. Jon Sweadner had 11 points for the Lancers while three players - Aaron Main, Grant Wilson, and Chris Papanicolas - each had nine points for the Railroaders.

Josh Young's 16-point effort led the Lancers to a 39-20 win in the varsity game. Brian Keeney and Billy Bernard had six and five points, respectively, in a losing cause.

Monocacy jumped out to a 32-23 first-half lead and held off a patented St. John's varsity rally for a 51-48 decision. The Vikings had a three-point effort fall short at the buzzer. St. John's was led by the scoring of Ben Hose with 19 points and Jair Brady with 15. Monocacy got 14 points from Anthony Blackwood, 13 from Wardell Roberts and 11 from John Truxillo.

A strong first half also helped the Monocacy jayvees to a 45-35 win. They led 25-15 at halftime. Monocacy was led by Matt Foley with 20 points and Brad Betson connected for 11. Matt Stephey led St. John's with 13 points, including four three-pointers, and Chris Pully added six points.

Poolesville defeated Middletown's varsity 38-28 in a game much closer than the score indicates. Cory Christman led a balanced Indian scoring attack with 11 points while Adam Powell netted nine and Freddie Leighton chipped in with eight. Middletown was led by Zach Miss wtih nine points.

The Indians also won the jayvee contest, shooting 50 percent from the floor for the first time this season in a 49-30 triumph. Tyler Bierly led the winners with nine points while Luis Mejia and Jared Christman added eight points apiece. Tyler Moser was the game's leading scorer for the Knights with 12 points.

WF SWEEPS INTRA-CITY PAIR, CATOCTIN JAYVEES WIN FIRST - 02/03/01

Monocacy had West Frederick's unbeaten varsity on the ropes, leading 27-26 after three quarters, but the Cadets stormed back in the final period for a 42-31 win. Quenton Beard led West Frederick with 15 points while Anthony Blackwood paced Monocacy with 13.

A put-back at the buzzer gave the Cadets a 32-30 win in the jayvee contest. The game was close throughout with Monocacy leading 19-18 at the half. Qmonte Matheny led the winners with nine points while Brad Betson topped Monocacy scorers with 14.

Catoctin's jayvees earned their first victory by scoring 21 second-half points to pull away from a 20-20 halftime deadlock and beat Walkersville 41-31. Ben Rose scored 12 of his game-high 18 points in the final half, many on second chance put-backs. Teammate Michael Topper added 11 points to the winning cause. Nicholas DeCarlo paced the Lions with eight points.

Walkersville used a balanced varsity scoring attack to hold off upset-minded Catoctin in a 49-33 win. Dave Berry, Chris Hannigan, and Chris Popp scored 11, 10, and nine points, respectfully. With the game still within a single-digit lead, Walkersville outscored Catoctin 16-8 in the final quarter. Popp hurt Catoctin in the second half, scoring all nine of his points. Catoctin's Derrick Thompson had nine points with teammates Dan Duranko and Michael Clarke adding six points each.

Windsor Knolls's varsity squandered a nine-point lead before pulling out a 44-43 verdict against St. John's. The Hawks led 35-26 before the Vikings rallied for a 40-38 lead late in the game. Ryan Brandenburg had 14 points and Daniel Orrison added 13 for Windsor Knolls. Jair Brady topped all scorers with 17 for St. John's.

The Hawks' jayvees raced to a 37-3 halftime lead in route to a 52-12 victory. Matt Deadrick led the Windsor Knolls with 14 points, all in the first half. Steve Anderson added 11. St. John's was led by Jonahtan Manlandt with four points.

MSD placed three players in double figures in handing Brunswick a 49-22 jayvee setback. Davon Cook had 17 points while Scott Lehmann and Martise Colston notched 12 apiece. Eric Zwilsky had four points for the Railroaders.

WINDSOR KNOLLS DOUBLES UP BALLENGER - 02/01/01

Windsor Knolls' jayvees won for the 12th time in 13 tries as they defeated Ballenger Creek 46-28. Steve Anderson had 11 points and Matthew Deadrick added nine for the Hawks. Andrew Barber had a team-high 10 points for the Bulldogs.

Good foul shooting in the final minute allowed the WK varsity to pull out a 41-34 decision. Windsor Knolls led 35-34 with a minute left and scored their last six points from the foul line. Ryan Brandenburg led the winners with 13 points while Cory Rhodes had 12 for Ballenger.

CADETS WIN BATTLE OF DIVISION LEADERS - 01/31/01

CMC-leading West Frederick remained perfect through 10 games by defeating MVAL-leading Walkersville 60-53. Luther Weedon had 27 points for the winners and was matched by Walkersville's Dave Berry. Corey Dorsey added 18 points for West Frederick and Brandon Geppert netted 10 for the Lions.

Qmonte Matheny dumped in a game-high 13 points as the Cadets won the opener 37-27. Malcom Stringer helped the Cadets' cause with seven markers. Derek Hubbard and Devin Trout had six and five points, respectively, for the Lions.

Windsor Knolls' varsity doubled up Catoctin 40-20 behind 13 points from Ryan Brandenburg and eight from Brandon Ponstein. Derrick Thompson had 10 points for the Cougars who fell behind 27-11 at the half.

The Hawks' league-leading jayvee offense was in high gear as they scored 40 first-half points in route to a 75-23 victory. Four players were in double figures - Steve Anderson (16), Matt Urie (14), Greg Price (12) and Mike Hall (11) - for Windsor Knolls. The Cougars were led by Jake Yocum with 10 points.

MSD UPSETS LINGANORE JAYVEES - 01/29/01

Davon Cook scored 20 points as MSD handed Linganore's jayvees their first loss of the season in double overtime 41-38. Jon Sweadner had 14 points to lead the Lancers.

CMC TEAMS TAKE SEVEN OF EIGHT FROM MVAL FOES - 01/28/01

Middletown's varsity prevented a sweep of cross-division rivals with a 46-32 win against Windsor Knolls. Middletown, which made 15 of 19 from the foul line in the fourth quarter, was led by Wes Bidle with 11 points. For the Hawks, Justin Short tallied seven points.

In the jayvee game, Windsor Knolls (10-1) jumped out to a 38-10 halftime lead and coasted to a 53-23 win. Patrick Carney lead the Knights with six while Steve Anderson had a game-high 17 for the winners.

Linganore's jayvees ran their unbeaten streak to 11 with a 55-18 triumph over Catoctin. Bradley Souders and Paul Rhoads each netted ten points for the Lancers while Ben Rose topped all Catoctin scorers with seven points.

Catoctin nearly gained it's first varsity win in the nightcap, but Linganore held on for a 48-46 victory. Isiah Brightful paced the victors with 18 points. Leading scorers for Catoctin were Michael Clarke with 11 markers and Derrick Thompson with a game-high 14 points.

Ballenger Creek's Marvin Stanton canned two free throws with 7.8 seconds remaining to seal a 50-48 varsity win over Brunswick. The Railroaders led by six at the half, but Bruce Dorsey poured in 11 of his game-high 26 points in the third quarter to rally the Bulldogs. Brian Keeney notched 14 points, Billy Bernard 12 and Alex Papanicolas 11 for Brunswick.

Danny Reed led a balanced BC scoring attack in the jayvee game with 10 points in a 47-19 decision over Brunswick. Aaron Main had six points for the Railroaders.

Poolesville's varsity jumped out to a 28-17 halftime lead only to see St. John's close the gap to 51-50 with 27 seconds remaining in the game. However, the Indians made the critical free throws in the closing seconds to secure a 59-50 victory. Adam Powell had 17 points and Tommy Dorrycott had 10 in the winning effort. Steven Keser had 15 points for the Vikings while Ben Hose had 13.

The Indians took the opener 41-24. Brandon Moore led the winners to a 28-12 halftime lead and finished with 13 points. Kyle Wood pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and added seven points. Chris Pull was the leading scorer for St. Johns with six points.

MSD overcame a 14-point first-half deficit to surprise Monocacy 43-39. Davon Cook had 18 points for the winners and led a 28-18 uprising in the second half. Francis Steele added 11 and Martise Colton 10 for MSD while Matty Foley and Brad Betson had 14 and 10 points, respectively, for Monocacy.

CADETS VARSITY, WINDSOR KNOLLS JAYVEES KEEP SOARING - 01/27/01

West Frederick's varsity moved to 9-0 on the year with a 48-31 win over St. John's. The Cadets, led by Quenton Beard with 15 points and Corey Dorsey with 11, raced to a 26-10 halftime lead and were never threatened. The Vikings got 15 points from Steve Keser.

The Cadets also got off to a quick start in the jayvee game, turning a 20-5 halftime lead into a 46-23 victory. West Frederick placed three players in double digits - Travon Vann with 15 points, Qmonte Matheny adding 11 and Eric Means 10.

Windsor Knolls went to 9-1 in jayvee play with a 52-12 decision against Brunswick. The Hawks came out flying in the first quarter, scoring the first 27 points of the game. Greg Price led the way with 12 numbers and Steve Anderson finished with 11. Brunswick was led by Chris Papanicolas with six points.

The varsity Hawks broke away from a 15-10 halftime lead to register a 39-19 win against the Railroaders. Ryan Brandenburg had a game-high 11 markers for the winners while Brandon Ponstein chipped in with nine. Brian Keeney topped Brunswick's scoring list with nine points.

Middletown made 17 of 24 free throws in notching a 49-31 varsity win against Catoctin. Wesley Bidle hit eight of 10 charity tosses while posting a game-high 18 points. Zach Miss added 10 points for the Knights. Catoctin was 10 of 16 on it's end of the court with Derrick Thompson matching Bidle with a 8-for-10 shooting performance. Thompson ended his night with 14 points.

Patrick Carney lead eight Knight jayvee scorers with 11 points, doing most of the damage in the first quarter when he scored nine to help his team take a 11-4 lead. Middletown went on to win 32-21. Catoctin was lead by Josh Chmelik with eight points coming off the bench.

Monocacy used a 14-2 run to open the second half and put away Ballenger Creek's varsity 40-26. Mike Cholet led a balanced Monocacy offense with nine points while Wardell Roberts contributed eight and Anthony Blackwood seven. Bruce Dorsey led the Bulldogs with nine markers.

Ballenger led the entire way in the jayvee game and held on for a 33-30 triumph. Christopher Castro scored nine for Ballenger while Brad Betson led Monocacy with a game-high 16 points.

LANCER JAYVEES GO TO 10-0, VIKINGS VARSITY WINS - 01/26/01

Linganore's jayvees outscored St. John's 23-7 in the second quarter and coasted to a 59-30 victory, their 10th of the season without a loss. The Lancers were led by Jon Sweadner with 14 points and Jimmy Kelley added 10. Jonathan Mahlandt led nine different scorers for St. John's with nine points.

Justin Moser and Jair Brady led the way with 17 points each as St. John's took the nightcap 53-47. Corey Nicholson and Jashua Young paced the Lancers, scoring 11 points apiece.

COOK HAS RIGHT RECIPE FOR CATOCTIN - 01/26/01

Davon Cook poured in 17 points to lead MSD to a 45-12 triumph over Catoctin. Chris Kelly's four points were tops for the Cougars.
