Walkersville claimed its second varsity championship in the last six years and Monocacy made it back-to-back titles on the jayvee level in the AA tournament finals at Linganore High School.
The Lions won a rematch of the 2004-05 varsity finale, serving up more Morris (Most Outstanding Player Scott Morris, that is) than the Mustangs could handle. The Lions' standout poured in 17 points in a 47-36 verdict.
The Mustangs' jayvees recovered to win a 47-37 overtime thriller after Windsor Knolls stormed back from a 16-point second-half deficit to force the extra period. Connor Joos of Monocacy earned Most Outstanding Player honors on that level.
It was the fifth jayvee tournament title for Monocacy and spoiled the Hawks' bid for their fifth in the last nine years.
Walkersville took control of the varsity game early and maintained it throughout, leading 14-8 after one period, 21-10 at the half and 30-18 after three. Their fullcourt pressure in the first half and half-court mam-to-man throughout was very effective.
Complimenting Morris' efforts were point guard Jeremy Musselman and shooting guard Brett Zimmerman. They had 11 and nine points, respectively, and Musselman did an excellent job handling Monocacy's pressure and distributing the ball to his scorers.
For Monocacy, Moses Bell, Joe Mattie, Victor Walker and Robert Williams each had eight points.
Monocacy's jayvees withstood a furious fourth-quarter run by Windsor Knolls and outscored the Hawks 13-3 in overtime to secure their title.
Tournament Most Outstanding Player Connor Joos finished with 14 points, six assists and four rebounds for the winners. Evan Campbell came off the bench to score eight points and pulled down four rebounds while Brian Uthe added six points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Windsor Knolls, who trailed by 14 at the start of the fourth quarter, was led in scoring by William Duddleson (15 points), Patrick Walsh (eight points) and Kyle Joyce (six points). Duddleson hit the game-tying basket with 5.8 seconds in regulation.
Poolesville is perfect and Brunswick is back while Oakdale is still looking for that elusive first title after the 2005-06 "A" tournament finals at MSD.
The Falcons' varsity closed out a 19-0 League campaign by thwarting Oakdale's slow-down tactics for a 17-7 championship game victory. It was the lowest scoring title game in the League's 34 years of tournament play.
It was also the first tourney crown for Poolesville in their 11 years of Mid-Maryland competition.
And Brunswick's jayvees claimed that program's first League tournament title since 1989 by upsetting top-seeded Oakdale 30-26 in the opener.
Oakdale's jayvees have reached the tournament finals each of the past three years and the varsity made its first appearance this season.
After losing to Poolesville twice during the regular season, Oakdale's varsity tried something different, decided to hold the ball to keep things close and then try to win it in the end. The strategy paid off for three quarters as Poolesville held only a three-point lead, 8-5, going into the fourth quarter.
Things slowly came apart for Oakdale as Poolesville converted turnovers and missed shots into made free throws en route to the championship game win. The Falcons' Brendan McFall hit for six points in the final period and finished with eight points total. Poolesville's Kevin Baker scored four points and brought home the tournament MVP trophy.
Ryan Dixon was again a force to be reckoned with for Oakdale. He finished with three points.
Poolesville beat every Mid-Maryland League team, "A" and "AA", at some point during the season, including scrimmages against Monocacy and West Frederick as well as Holiday Tournament wins over Ballenger Creek and Linganore.
Tyrus Lawson hit four free throws in the final minute to seal Brunswick's 30-26 jayvee championship game victory over Oakdale. It was an exciting game with neither team able to establish more than a four point lead.
Oakdale was up by that margin, 13-9, at the half, but Brunswick outscored them 21-13 in the second half. Lawson led Brunswick with eight points and DeShaun Imes had seven. Oakdale was led by Vince Croce’s 12 points, Kyle Carpenter added five points, Tanner Mills scored four points and Juan Retana, who had a great tournament weekend carrying Oakdale to the championship game, scored three points.
Brunswick's Anthony Chapouris was named the tournament's MVP.
Brunswick challenged Poolesville from the start and trailed by only three at the end of the first quarter, but it was all Poolesville after that as the varsity Falcons went to 18-0 on the year with a 61-36 win that propelled them into the "A" tournament finals. The Falcons went on a 27-7 run after the slow start to blow the game open. Poolesville was led by Kevin Baker's 16 points and 15 points from Kyle Bredice. The Railroaders were paced by an outstanding effort from Nathan Foltz (14 points) and Dillon Johnikin (eight points).
Oakdale won its "A" semifinal 36-17 over Glenwood. After a very close first half, Oakdale pulled away in the second half with patience on offense and great man-to-man pressure defense. Oakdale did a great job at boxing out and controlling the boards. Oakdale was led by Ryan Dixon with 18 points followed by Matt Reeping with seven points and Anthony Taylor with six points. Sam Ashton and M.J. Johnson did a great job of handling the ball and running the offense.
In a very hard fought battle, Monocacy hit some big foul shots down the stretch to beat Windsor Knolls in "AA" semifinal action, 33-26, and secure a change to defend its "AA" tournament title. The first period was close with the lead changing on most every posession. The Hawks took a 15-8 lead in the second period only to see Monocacy go on a 9-1 run late in the half to take a 17-16 lead at the break. Monocacy led 21-20 after three periods. Robert Williams, who had 10 points for the Mustangs, and Victor Walker both shot 3-of-4 from the foul line in the fourth to help secure the win. Forrest Mason led Monocacy with 11 points. Frank Jarboe was high scorer for the Hawks with seven points.
Walkersville jumped out to a 20-point lead in the second quarter and held off an aggressive Ballenger Creek comeback to capture the other "AA" semi 51-46. The Lions' Scott Morris led all scorers with 25 points with help from Brett Zimmerman's eight points and J.R. Ferguson's nine rebounds. The Ballenger charge was captained by Aikeen Brown's 15 points, all in the 2nd half, and teammate Sean Brennan's 12 points and Jordan Clayton's nine.
Will Duddleson scored on a put-back at the buzzer to give Windsor Knolls a thrilling 39-37 win over Crestwood in "AA" semifinal action. Duddleson scored the last five points of the game and finished with a game-high 19. The Hawks were down by three points with a little more then a minute to go when Duddleson scored on a great move to the basket, was fouled and converted the foul shot, tying the game at 37. The teams traded turnovers and the Hawks got the ball back with eight seconds in the game. Kyle Joyce drove the baseline, attempting a layup that came off the front of the rim. Duddleson fought for the ball and hit the short follow-up at the buzzer. Joyce contributed seven points for the Hawks and Aaron Bing had five. The Cavs were excellent the entire game. The Hawks started strong, taking a, 11-4 lead but the Cavs rallied behind Shakil Smith-Cain who had nine points in the second quarter and Andrew Rollins eight first-half points. Cain finished with 11 and Rollings led his team with 16 points.
Monocacy advanced to the "AA" championship game after defeating Walkersville 49-35. After a tightly-played first quarter that saw the Mustangs leading by a score of 13 to 9, Monocacy allowed just two points in the second quarter. The Mustangs were led in scoring by Connor Joos who has 20 points followed by Deandre Scott with scored 12 points. The Lions where led in scoring by Quentin Ezell (12 points), James Hughes (11 points -all from the free throw line) and Andrew Voorhis six points on a pair of three-pointers. Brian Uthe and Jacob Parks controlled the inside as Uthe pulled down nine rebounds and Parks had eight caroms to go along with five blocked shots.
Oakdale outscored Catoctin 15-2 in the fourth quarter to break open a close game in route to a 50-33 "A" semifinal victory over Catoctin. Juan Retana had another great game offensively, scoring 15 points while playing great defense in holding Catoctin’s Landon Routhzan to only seven points. Vince Croce, coming back from the flu, played a tremendous game with 23 points and 21 rebounds. Bryon Plummer added four assists and two steals. Nick Krstanovic paced Catoctin with 12 points.
Brunswick defeated Poolesville in the other "A" semi 32-23 in a very close contest. Anthony Chapouris led Brunswick with 10 points, including 6-of-8 from the foul line in the forth quarter to seal the win for Brunswick. Tyrus Lawson had eight points for Brunswick and Matt Wanger and C.J Shankle each had six. Charlie Smith and Zach Zapata had seven points for Poolesville and Spencer Barks had six.
Walkersville overcame an early 10-point deficit and never led until two minutes were left in the game, but managed to slip past Crestwood 56-50 in overtime in an "AA" quarterfinal thriller. After the Lions roared back, Crestwood's Arthur Talley sank a clutch foul shot to tie the game and eventually send it to overtime. In the extra period, Walkersville's Scott Morris had eight of his game-high 29 points and teammate A.J. Meyer was perfect from the foul line to clinch the win. Teammate J.R. Ferguson added 11 points and 13 rebounds. For Crestwood, sharpshooting Allen Mykel (10 points), Arthur Talley (11 points) and Justin Bowens (11 points) kept the pressure on Walkersville throughout.
Monocacy defeated TJ 36-25 in the varsity "AA" tournament quarterfinals. Victory Walker and Joe Mattei led the Mustangs with nine points apiece. The Patriots were led in scoring by Jerry Smith with eight points.
Ryan Mason scored 13 of his game-high 17 points in the first half to lead Windsor Knolls over Middletown 50-21 in an "AA" quarter. Kevin Parker was high scorer for the Knights with 10 points and Will Lyons added six. Frank Jarboe chipped in with 11 for the Hawks.
Ballenger Creek came from behind in the fourth quarter to defeat Linganore 38-33 in "AA action. Leading scorers for Ballenger were Sean Brennan (10 points), Ken Hill (eight) and Kevin Ruzbacki (eight).
Glenwood knocked off Catoctin 46-22 in first round action of the "A" tournament. Glenwood, using a full-court press, jump out to a 27-10 halftime lead. Austin Matthews (12 points) and Noah Abramson (10) led the Cobras in scoring. Josh Kruhm and Brandon Peck paced Catoctin with eight and seven points, respectively.
Brunswick downed Folly Quarter 42-34 in "A" quarterfinal action. For Brunswick, Dillon Johnikin led all scorers and rebounders with 17 points and 11 rebounds while Jean-Luc Hirabayashi contributed a season-high seven points. For Folly Quarter, Thomas Neuberth led in scoring with nine points and Scott Salopek added eight while Kevin Brennan grabbed eight rebounds.
Juan Retana had a game-high 15 points and scored the winning basket with less than 10 seconds remaining as top-seeded Oakdale survived a scare from #8 seed Mt. Airy, 33-31. Short-handed due to family commitments and illness, the Eagles found themselves down eight points at halftime but they held the Bulldogs scoreless in the third quarter to get back into the game.
Catoctin dominated MSD 64-39 in an "A" quarterfinal. Catoctin led from start to finish and outscored MSD 37-18 in the second half. For Catoctin, Landon Routzahn led all scorers with 18 points. Nick Krstanovic had 14 points and also had a strong rebounding game while Nick Maxey added 11 points. For MSD, Ethan Kamer and Todd Boheyo delivered ten points each.
Poolesville came from behind to beat Glenwood 43-39 in first round "A" tournament action. The Falcons' front-court was the difference as Poolesville got a season-high 20 points from 6'1 forward Spencer Barks. Poolesville center Zach Zapata also contributed 14 points in the win.
Windsor Knolls opened with an amazing 38-0 run, led 40-4 halftime and went on to defeat TJ 67-40 in their "AA" quarterfinal. The Hawks' fastbreak was in high gear and big man Patrick Walsh had his best game of the season with a game-high 17 points. Thomas Stewart ran the point, adding eight points includinc 4-of-6 from the foul line. Kyle Joyce contributed nine points with drives to the hoop. Will Duddleson and Aaron Bing had seven. The Hawks' bench did an outstanding job with Phillip Schmidt (eight points), Dylan Gardner and Cory Mullinauex (four). Kyler Rose, Connor Cunningham, Matt Tarrant and Matt Lane played excellent defense and contributed to the victory. The Patriots played hard the entire game and scored 21 points in the third quarter. They were led by D.J. Ansbro with eight points, Matt Lawrence with seven and Joe Atmonavage and Brian Chase with six points each.
Walkersville got past Ballenger Creek 44-41 in the "AA" jayvee quarters as Quentin Ezell accounted for 13 points and got eight-point support from both James Hughes and Andrew Voorhis. Brandon Willett had 13 points to lead the Bulldogs. Derek Macierowski and Micheal Green added eight apiece.
Shakil Smith had 16 points and Andrew Rollins 10 as Crestwood ran past Linganore 42-22 in a "AA" quarterfinal contest. Trayvon Hoy added six points for the winners. Mike Wirtz and Steven Lesko each had seven points for Linganore.
Mt. Airy made it three in a row against Folly Quarter this season, winning the "A" tournament jayvee play-in game 26-19. The Bulldogs also won both regular season meetings. Additional details were not made available.
Kevin Parker had a game-high 11 points to lead Middletown to a 32-23 win against West Frederick in the "AA" tournament varsity play-in. Fabian Gonzalez netted seven points for the Cadets.
The Knights also won the jayvee play-in, topping West Frederick 31-24. Christopher Pirrone rallied the Knights from a five-point, second half deficit by scoring 10 of his team-high 12 points in the closing minutes. Middletown was also supported by strong rebounding and the good inside game of Jared Curry. Ben Lewis added eight points and Curry four. The Cadets were paced by Sky Baron and his 12 points and Jalen Gee and his five points.
In one of the lowest scoring games of the season, Glenwood's jayvee's held off a second-half rally by MSD for a 22-18 victory. With both teams focusing on stopping the other's scorer, each possession became crucial. Glenwood utilized a box-and-one defense to slow MSD's high scoring Todd Bonheyo while MSD used a collapsing 2-3 zone to stop Glenwood's Erik Siegfried from getting to the basket. The halftime score was 9-4 in favor of Glenwood as neither team could get any offense going. For the second game in a row, only four players scored for Glenwood. However, the bench provided six critical points in the second half as Greg Honchel nailed a baseline jumper, hit one of two free throws in the third quarter and provided tough defense, relieving Matthew Hyer in guarding Bonheyo in the box-in-one. The tension mounted in the fourth quarter as MSD pulled to within a point and looked to be poised to take the lead. As MSD pressured Hyer and Siegfried, Danny Napolitano found Nick Wynne open just beyond the arc for a momentum-changing 3-pointer that gave Glenwood some breathing room down the stretch. MSD fought hard as James Steingieser, Jesse Steingieser, Michael DeVito and Shawn Harrington all hit big shots in the second half to keep the Orioles within striking distance. Despite the defensive concentration on them, Bonheyo and Siegfried led the scoring with eight points each. Hyer added five points for Glenwood while Napolitano handled the point with poise under MSD's intense pressure while chipping in three points in the tense fourth quarter, including a baseline drive for a pull-up jump shot.
Mike Wirtz hit a deciding free throw with less than one second remaining that gave Linganore's jayvees a 32-31 victory over TJ and a #6 seed in the "AA" tournament. A loss would have dropped them to #8, forcing a play-in game. The free throw resulted from a technical foul on the Patriots as they had six players on the court. The Lancers rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit, scoring 18 points in the third quarter. The teams traded the lead throughout the fourth quarter. TJ was led in scoring by Ken Wims who had 13 points and Matt Lawrence who added 12. The Lancers were led by Luke Jackson's 11 points including three 3-point baskets.
TJ easily beat Linganore 46-22 in the nightcap. Jerry Smith had 15 points and Marquis Woodyard 10 points to lead TJ.
Ego Despite foul trouble, Walkersville's Ego Ferguson dominated their varsity game with Brunswick, scoring 25 points and collecting 15 rebounds in a 55-33 Lions victory. The win allowed Walkersville to finish in a three-way tie for third seed in the "AA" tournament. They got the highest seed of the three based on a coin flip. Dillon Johnikin led Brunswick's scorers with 13.
Brunswick's jayvees used full-court pressure to pull off a huge win over Walkersville 38-25. Matt Wanger and C.J. Shankle led Brunswick with 12 and 9 points, respectively. Andrew Voorhis had eight points for Walkersville and Quenton Ezell had six.
Oakdale defeated Middletown 31-23 on the varsity level. Middletown took the lead in the first quarter 8-4. Oakdale stormed back with 11 points in the second quarter with Ryan Dixon collecting six of those. Oakdale led 15-10 at the half. In the second half, the Knights cut the lead to two points late in the third quarter. However, Oakdale was able to take control of the game in the fourth quarter and secure their second win of the season over the Knights. Ryan Dixon led all scorers with 17 points and the Knights were led by Patrick Ryan with seven.
Oakdale used its superior height advantage to pound MIddletown into submission in the jayvee contest 38-33. The Knights did make a valiant comeback and drove the game into overtime behind strong shooting from Zack Fontenot and strong inside play from Ben Lewis who each netted nine points. In the end, Vince Croce and his 21 points led Oakdale to the win.
Glenwood held on after a great Mt. Airy comeback to win 33-26 in varsity action. Mt. Airy outscored Glenwood 15-2 in the third quarter to close to within two points. Tyler Lederer led Mt. Airy in scoring with nine points. Noah Abramson (12 points) and Austin Matthews (five points) led the Cobras in scoring.
The Glenwood jayvee team held off a hot shooting Mt. Airy team to come away with a 44-46 win. The game was close the entire way with many lead changes. Ten players scored for Mt. Airy. Ryan McTavish had 11 points and Jake Phillips eight. Only four players scored for Glenwood, but it was enough as Matthew Hyer led all scorers with 19 points, Erik Siegfried added 16 while Scott Dziwulski and Danny Napolitano chipped in six and five, respectively.
Monocacy defeated Ballenger Creek in jayvee action 45-28 to wrap up a co-championship in the Chesapeake division and #1 seed for the AA tournament. Connor Joos led the way with 16 points and Brain Uthe added eight. Winnpegler was the leading scorer for Ballenger with five points.
The Mustangs also won the varsity game by a 44-39 count. Joe Mattei led the way with 15 points followed by Brian Healy with 12. Sean Brennan led Ballenger with 20 points.
In an amazing comeback, Catoctin's jayvee team overcame an 11-point deficit to win 50-48 over Glenwood in overtime and clinch first place in the Piedmont division race. Catoctin's Landon Routzahn was top scorer with 20 points. Catoctin's Nick Maxey scored 14 points and had a strong rebounding game. Glenwood's Erik Siegfried scored 14 points. Glenwood made five three-point shots during the game.
Glenwood won the varsity contest 34-22. High scorers for Glenwood were Noah Abramson with 11 points and Chad Felix with nine. For Catoctin it was Kolby Maly with seven points and David Hertel with five. The Cougars played an excellent defensive game against a very quick Glenwood squad.
TJ came out of the gate fast and furious, putting 25 points on the board in the first quarter and never let Folly Quarter into the game in taking a 55-20 varsity decision. Petros Calomeris and Lamont Wims led TJ with 14 and 11, respectively. Cole Devries played well defensively for Folly Quarter and had four points. Dustin Grove and Adam Brookhart also had four apiece for the Falcons.
In a hard-fought game that was close from beginning to end, Folly Quarter's jayvees prevailed over St. John's 33-31. Folly Quarter was led by Michael Arensmeier who scored 11 points and Blake Heuer who added eight points. Center Zac Brightbill played good interior defense with key rebounds. Jude Merkel of St. John's led all scorers with 16 points. The Vikings also got seven points from guard Nick Peifer.
MSD defeated Mt. Airy 36-33 on the jayvee level. No additional details were provided.
Windsor Knolls' varsity exploded in the third quarter, outscoring Linganore 23-0 to post a 56-29 win that clinched the Chesapeake division title and #1 tournament seed. With both teams scoring at will, the Hawks held a slight lead of 14-13 after one quarter. The Hawks took an early lead in the second of 18-13 only to see the Lancers come back, with Jeff Havenstein leading the way, to a halftime lead of 20-18. Ryan Mason, who led the Hawks with 20 points, scored 12 points and Kevin Sowers added eight in the decisive third period. Havenstein led the Lancers with eight points and Alex Eckard added six. Sowers finished with 13 points and Frank Jarboe added 10 for the winners.
The Hawks' jayvees survived a furious late rally by the Lancers and held on for a 38-35 victory the locked up at least a share of their Chesapeake divison honors. The Hawks fell behind early and trailed at the half 19-14. The third quarter was all Hawks as they went on a 17-2 run to take command 31-21. The Lancers fought back in the fourth quarter as Micheal Wirtz scored seven of his game-high 14 points. The Hawks were led by Kyle Joyce with 13 points. Patrick Walsh had another big game on the boards and finished with nine points. Thomas Stuart had an outstanding game running the offense for the Hawks and chipped in five points. Kyle Warholic played well for the Lancers. finishing with seven.
Crestwood overcame an 18-17 halftime deficit to defeat Poolesville's javyees 35-26 and wrap up top honors in the Antietam division. Zach Zapata scored 12 of his 18 points in the first half to help Poolesville take the lead. Crestwood was able to hold him in check the second half to secure the win. Charles Myers led Crestwood with nine points. Trayvon Hoy and Andrew Rollins chipped in with seven points each.
Poolesville's varsity outscored Crestwood 13-2 in the fourth quarter to secure a 45-35 win and cap a 17-0 regular season, the first varsity team to do that since West Frederick (20-0) in 2000-01. Crestwood came out strong in the third quarter to take a one point lead heading into the final quarter. Poolesville proved to be too strong down the stretch and hit key shots to secure the win. Brendan McCall led all scorers with 17 points while Kevin Baker added 13. Crestwood was led by Mykel Allen and Arthur Talley with 10 points each.
Ballenger Creek's varsity downed TJ 44-32. Derwin Bowins had 11 points for the winners and LaMonte Wims a team-high nine for the Patriots.
TJ won the jayvee contest 41-35 behind 12 points from Kenny Wims. Jack Mazieowski had a game-high 15 for the Bulldogs.
MSD scored the first basket of the game and never looked back for 40-19 victory over Folly Quarter. The Orioles led 24-12 at halftime and built the lead steadily throughout the second half. MSD's Todd Bonheyo had an outstanding offense output with 20 points and Ryan Aylward led his Folly Quarter team with nine points.
Ryan Mason's 13 points helped Windsor Knolls to a clutch 30-27 varsity win over Ballenger Creek that kept the Hawks' Chesapeake division title and #1 AA tournament seed hopes alive. Josh Marshall was high scorer for Ballenger with six points.
The Hawks' jayvees also got a must-win as Kyle Joyce totaled 11 points in a 41-35 victory in the prelim. Jack Macierowski had 10 points to lead the Bulldogs.
Quentin Ezell was a one-man wrecking crew, scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 boards to lead Walkersville to a 30-28 upset win over visiting Crestwood. The loss delayed the Cavaliers from clinching the Antietam division regular season title. Crestwood tied it up with under a minute to go by forcing two late turnovers. An offensive board and one last basket in the paint by James Hughes sealed the win for Walkersville. Andrew Rollins and Charles Myers led Crestwood by scoring eight points apiece.
Playing with a short bench due to injury and sickness, visiting Crestwood traded baskets with Walkersville's varsity before the Lions finally secured a 37-29 win. The Lions' Scott Morris led all scorers with 22 points and got assistance from teammate J.R. Ferguson's nine points. For the Cavs, C.J. Ingram led the way with 10 points and Mykel Allen added nine.
TJ broke open a close game in the fourth quarter and defeated Folly Quarter's jayvees 47-26 after leading by 10 points in the third quarter. With a balanced attack, the Patriots were led by Matthew Lawrence with 10 points with contributions from Joe Atmonavage and Brian Chase with seven points each. Folly Quarter was led by guards Blake Heuer with eight points and Ryan Aylward with six.
MSD got off to a 15-2 start after first quarter but managed only seven points the rest of the way in dropping a 28-22 jayvee decision to St. John's. St. John's was aggressive on the boards and worked the ball patiently on offense, hitting some good outside shots to get themselves back in the game. Jude Merkel led the winners with 10 points. The host Orioles were paced by Todd Bonheyo with eight points, Ethan Kramer with seven.
In a battle of crosstown rivals, Glenwood's varsity defeated Folly Quarter 36-30 to clinch the Piedmont division regular season championship. In a well played, aggressive contest, Glenwood was led by Noah Abramson 10 points. Thomas Neuberth led the Falcons with 10 points. Folly Quarter led at the half 19-18.
Poolesville's varsity ran out to a big lead early and settled in for a 49-23 win over Brunswick. It was their 16th win without a loss. Kevin Baker (14 points) and Kyle Bredice (12 points) paced the Poolesville effort while Nathan Foltz scored seven points to lead Brunswick. The Railroaders also got five points from Jean-Luc Hirabayashi.
Brunswick snapped a three-game skid in the opener, limiting Poolesville to just four first-half points and ended up with a 29-19 win. Tyrus Lawson led the Railroaders with eight points and teammates Anthony Chapouris and DeShawn Imes contributed six points each in the win. Poolesville was paced by eight points from Charlie Smith.
Walkersville turned it up a notch in the half to deal host Middletown a 39-24 varsity defeat. The first half saw Middletown jump out to a 10-9 lead in the first quarter, but Walkersville clawed back on the perimeter play of Scott Morris and the inside presence of Ego Ferguson to take a 20-15 lead at the half. In the second half, the Lions created turnovers and put the game out of reach for the Knights. Walkersville was led by Scott Morris with 16 points and Ego Ferguson with eight. Will Lyons had nine for the Knights.
The jayvee Knights continued their up-and-down season by again knocking off one of the premiere teams in the League. Middletown defeated Walkersville 30-26. The Knights played inspired defense all day and were led by Ben Lewis and his 10 points. Chris Pirrone chipped in seven and Zack Fontenot five in the victory. The Lions were led by Orlando Rosa and his 11 points with Quentine Ezell adding eight in the loss.
Frank Jarboe had a team-high 11 points, five in the first quarter to help Windsor Knolls' varsity take a 16-8 advantage that they parlayed into a 42-26 win against Ballenger Creek. The Hawks took control in the second half with pressure defense and good inside play by Alex Crawford on the defensive end (six rebounds, three blocked shots). They outscored Ballenger Creek 16-6 in the third quarter. Derwin Bowens led Ballenger with six points, Seth Kraham and Kenneth Hill each chipped in five. Ryan Mason scored 10 points and Alex Crawford added five for the Hawks.
Windsor Knolls won the jayvee opener 46-37 . The two played a fast-paced first half. The Hawks were up by as many as 10 points, but the Bulldogs fought back and cut the lead to 31-25 at the half. Derec Macierowski had an outstanding first half as he scored 10 points on drives to the basket. Hawks' big men Patrick Walsh and Will Dudleson were strong on the boards. Dudleson finished with 10 points. Kyle Joyce did a great job on Derec Macierowski, holding him scoreless in the second half. Joyce also led all scorers with 15. Micheal Green had a strong game for the Bulldogs, finishing with eight points. The Hawks got 15 bench points, led by Aaron Bing with six. Dylan Gardner, a former Bulldog, had a solid effort for the Hawks.
Middletown's varsity jumped out to an early lead, but Poolesville quickly gained the advantage and beat the Knights by a final score of 47-28. Poolesville's Kevin Baker led all scorers with 14 points. Brendan McFall (13 points) and Kyle Bredice (12 points) also reached double figures for the Falcons. Will Lyons (11 points) and Koby Cavenaugh (10 points) handled most of the scoring duties for Middletown.
Poolesville trailed the jayvee game for the first three, but six points in three minutes from the Falcon's Spencer Barks pushed Poolesville to a two-point lead at the end of the third period. The jayvee Falcons then held on for a 30-25 win over the visiting Knights. Barks finished with seven points and fellow big man Zach Zapata led Poolesville with eight points. Ben Lewis was a force all night for Middletown and finished with nine points and eight rebounds. Teammate Chris Pirrone chipped in seven points in the loss.
Crestwood bolted to a 23-2 lead after one quarter and overwhelmed Brunswick 59-25. Crestwood's Arthur Tally led all scorers with 19 points with Clarence Ingram added 16. Brunswick was led by Dillon Johnikin's 10 points.
Brunswick's jayvees lost their third straight as Crestwood won 31-23. Brunswick led at the half 11-8 and was outscored 23-12 in the second half. Andrew Rollins paced Crestwood with 12 points and Tyrus Lawson got nine in the losing effort.
Linganore defeated West Frederick 47-36 in varsity action. The game was very close for three quarters until Linganore pulled away in the fourth. Linganore was led by Jeff Havenstein's 22 points. Brandyn Wilkerson added nine points and Michael Lesko seven. West Frederick was led in scoring by John Ambush with 10 points and Stefan Farinha with eight points.
In a close game, West Frederick's jayvee beat Linganore 42-36. West Frederick was led in scoring by Lakota Tow's 13 points (four from three-point range) and Sky Barron's 12 points. Not to be outdone by the Cadets long range accuracy, Linganore's Travis Wilks canned five threes pointers and led all scorers with 17 points.
Seven players got into the scoring column for the varsity Falcons as Folly Quarter defeated Catoctin 40-12. Brandon Peck had seven points for Catoctin. Folly Quarter was led by Dustin Grove (12 points, six boards). Thomas Neuberth and Kevin Brennan both added eight points for the victors.
Landon Routzahn a game-high 20 poitns, 13 in the first quarter alone, to push Catoctin's jayvees past Folly Quarter 53-34. Blake Heuer added 14 points for the winners while Jamie McEvoy had 10 points for Folly Quarter.
In a slow paced varsity game, Oakdale went up 15-5 at halftime and held on for a 29-25 win against Glenwood. Oakdale was led by Ryan Dixon with 17 points. M.J. Johnson managed the floor well, running the point. Sammy Ashton also a played great defense for the winners. Glenwood was led by Austin Matthews and Brendan McMahon with six points apiece.
Jude Merkel had 13 points and St. John's led from tap to horn in claiming a 35-29 jayvee win against Mt. Airy. Ryan McTavish had 10 points to pace the Bulldogs.
Oakdale's jayvees fought back from an 18-7 second-quarter deficit, tied Crestwood 21-21 at halftime and went on to register a 42-33 victory that gave them to top seed in the upcoming "A" tournament. The second half remained close until late in the fourth quarter when clutch free throw shooting by Vince Croce (5-of-6) sealed the Eagles' victory. Croce led the Eagles with an outstanding performance, scoring 30 points and pulling down 24 rebounds. Tanner Mills added 11 rebounds. Kyle Carpenter had six assists and five steals. Shakil Smith-Cain played a nice game from the point, leading the Cavaliers with 16 points. Andrew Rollins added 10 points.
Crestwood had three players in double digits to win the varsity game 49-33. The leader was Arthur Talley with 15 points. Justin Bowen added 12 points and C.J. Ingram 11. The score was tied at halftime 23-23. In the second half Crestwood controlled the boards, scoring most of there points inside. Crestwood played a great game overall.
Poolesville, playing great team defense, defeated Glenwood 35-15 for its 14th varsity win without a loss. Brendan McFall led Poolesville with 23 points. Kevin Baker also had four points for Poolesville. Austin Matthews (four) and Noah Abramson (three) were the leading scorers for Glenwood.
In the jayvee game, Poolesville defeated Glenwood 34-31 in a tough battle that saw the Falcons take an early 6-0 lead only to have Glenwood take the lead in the second quarter and hold it until the final two minutes of play. With both teams' big men fouling out - Poolesville's Zack Zapata with 16 points and Glenwoods Erik Siegfried with two points - and the score tied at 31 with five seconds left, Poolesville was able to rebound a missed free throw and score on a put back to seal the win. Matthew Hyer led Glenwood with 12 points. Eron Eboda added eight for the winners while Danny Napolitano and Zack LePage chipped in five each for Glenwwood.
Windsor Knolls went on a 17-4 second quarter run to top TJ's varsity 40-23. Windsor Knolls was led in scoring by Kevin Sowers with 12 points followed by Bill Hanley with 11 points. The Patriots were led in scoring by Lamont Whims with 10 points followed by Jerry Smith with eight points.
The Hawks' jayvees let a 15-point second half lead get away, but rallied to edge the Patriots 38-35 in the opener. TJ came all the way back to lead by one point with two minutes to play, but fell behind by three in the final minutes and had a last-second shot fall off the mark. William Duddleson had 10 point to lead the winners while Thomas Stuart added eight, including 6-of-8 from the foul line. For the Pats, Joe Atmonavage scored 13 point and Matt Lawrence added seven.
Matthew Healy netted 12 points to propel Monocacy's varsity past West Frederick 52-30. Ben Shafer and Fabian Gonzalez had seven and six points, respectively, in a losing cause.
DeAndre Scott put up 16 markers as the Mustangs won the jayvee contest 53-24. Sky Baron's 10 points were tops for the Cadets.
Folly Quarter downed Mt. Airy 41-31 in varsity action. No other details were provided.
Mt. Airy used a big second quarter to pull away from an 8-8 tie and beat Folly Quarter's jayvees 46-22. It was not until the fourth quarter, however, that Mt. Airy pulled away with 19 points - six by Eric Hunsberger and six by Kevin Seymour (eight for the game). Mt. Airy was led by Ryan Mctavish's 19 points. Folly Quarter was led by Ryan Aylward with five points and Jamie McEvoy.
Jeff Havenstein had 12 points to lead Linganore to a low-scoring 28-24 varsity victory at Ballenger Creek. Aikeem Brown's eight points were tops for the Bulldogs.
Ballenger Creek won the jayvee opener 44-29 behind the 16-point effort of Derek Macierowski. Alexander Anwar had eight points to lead the Lancers.
Behind the solid play of forward Scott Morris (13 points, 17 rebounds) and center J.R. Ferguson (10 points, 14 rebounds), Walkersville held off the visiting Oakdale varsity 40-26. Brett Zimmerman added eight points for the Lions. The Eagles' attack was led by Ryan Dixon with 11 points and teammate Brendan Farley contributed eight.
Walkersville downed Oakdale 40-24 in jayvee action. Behind by four points at the end of the first quarter, Walkersville rallied behind James Hughes who scored 10 points in the second quarter to put the Lions up by seven at halftime. Walkersville continued to roll in the second half by shutting down Oakdale's big men with great team defense. Raynell Ferguson was Walkersville's leading scorer with 11 points. Leading the way for Oakdale was Bryon Plummer with 10 points while Vince Croce added six.
Glenwood's jayvees jumped out to a 28-3 first-quarter lead in route to a 54-22 win over cross-town rival Folly Quarter. Glenwood was led by Greg Honchel with a season-high 12 points. Matt Hyer added 10, Erik Siegfried eight and Nick Wynne chipped in seven, including 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. Folly Quarter's balanced scoring was led by Brian Luo, Zack Brightbill, Adam Ko and Ryan Aylward with four points each.
Jerry Smith threaded the nets for 21 points to lead TJ to a 50-36 varsity win over homestanding West Frederick. Fabian Gonzales led the Cadets with 12 points.
The Patriots also won the jayvee game 39-24 behind a 14 point effort from Joe Atmonavage. Sky Baron had a half dozen points in a losing cause.
Middletown's Patrick Ryan and Kevin Parker scored 12 and eight points, respectively, to pace the Knights to a 46-38 varsity victory over host Brunswick. Middletown scrapped together an eight point lead by halftime and then held on to win by the same margin. Ryan also grabbed six rebounds. Brunswick's Branon Buhr led all scorers and rebounders with 18 points and nine caroms.
Brunswick jayvees lost to a much-improved Middletown squad 36-32. Sam Michels led the way for Middletown with eight points and Benjamin Lewis had seven. C.J. Shankle and Anthony Chapouris both had eight points for Brunswick.
Nick Maxey's 16 points helped lift Catoctin's jayvees past St. John's 42-34. The Vikings led throughout the first half, but Catoctin took command early in the third quarter and never looked back. The Vikings turned the ball over on crucial possessions and the Cougars took advantage. Jude Merkel led St. John's with 10 points and Nick Peifer added nine.
Monocacy's varsity posted a 38-33 come-from-behind win against Linganore. Brian Healy's play sparked the comeback. Leading scorers for Monocacy were Victor Walker with 13 points, Joe Mattei with nine and Healy with eight. Top scorers for Linganore were Anderson with 10 points and Haberston with eight.
The Mustangs defeated the Lancers 45-34 in the opener. Monocacy pulled away in second half behind the strong play of Deandre Scott (13 points) and Brian Uthe (14 points and 12 rebounds). Liganore was led in scoring by Michael Wirtz with 13 points and Travis Wilks with 14 points.
Ryan Dixon poured in 30 points and added 10 rebounds as Oakdale registered a 58-38 varsity triumph against Brunswick. Also for Oakdale, M.J. Johnson collected 10 points and 11 assists. Brunswick was led by Brandon Buhr with 11 points. Oakdale came out strong, leading 18-8 after the first quarter. Brunswick closed the gap to five points at halftime, but the hosts came out hot in the third quarter and put the game out of reach.
In probably its best-played game of the year, Oakdale’s jayvees jumped out to a 14-8 first quarter lead against Brunswick in route to a 44-29 victory. Oakdale was led by Vince Croce’s 17 points, 15 rebounds, four steals and four assists. Tanner Mills and Kyle Carpenter scored eight points each and Bryon Plummer added seven points. Juan Retana, playing his first game of the year at point guard, added five assists. Tyrus Lawson led the Railroaders with 10 points.
Brandon Peck had 14 points and Colby Maly 11 to lead Catoctin to a 35-28 win over Mt. Airy in varsity action. Alex Terpening and Marty Landsman had 10 and nine points, respectively, for the Bulldogs.
Led by a balanced scoring attack in which eight players scored, Catoctin defeated Mt. Airy 52-46 in the jayvee game. For Catoctin, Landon Routzahn scored 16 points and Nick Maxey had 10 points. For Mt. Airy, Ryan Mctavish led all scorers with 19 points.
Crestwood jumped out to a 30-10 halftime lead and cruised to a 49-21 varsity win against Middletown. The Knights were limited to only two field goals in the first half, five overall. Justin Bowens led the Cavaliers with 19 points and C.J. Ingram chipped in with eight. Mykel Allen had an excellent floor game for Crestwood, finding open teammates for easy buckets. Middletown was led by Kevin Parker with seven points.
The Cavaliers held off a furious Knights rally in the fourth quarter of the javyee contest to win 34-32. Crestwood led 25-15 at the end of the third quarter but Middletown, led by Chris Pirrone who scored all of his 13 points during the comeback, fought back only to fall short. Shakil Smith and Charles Myers led Crestwood with 10 and eight points, respectively.
Aukeem Brown had a game-high nine points to lead Ballenger Creek to an exciting 30-28 varsity win against West Frederick. Fabian Gonzalez, Josnell Deleon and Stefan Farinha each had five points in a losing cause.
West Frederick won the opener 42-36 with Sky Baron accounting for 14 of the winners' point total. Derrick Mazieowski and Konnor Gubler contributed 10 points each for the Bulldogs.
Missed foul shots turned out to be the deciding factor as host Walkersville lost a 49-46 varsity barn-burner against 13-0 Poolesville. Scott Morris led all scorers with 26 points and 11 rebounds and Lions teammate J.R. Ferguson established himself in the paint with a solid 13 points and 14 boards (seven on each end of the court). Poolesville relied on perimeter shooting with five three-point goals - three by Kyle Bredice (15 points) and two by David Schramm (10 points). Brendan McFall supported the Falcons with 14 points.
Zach Zapata led all scorers with 19 points as the jayvee Falcons upset the Lions. Walkersville built a nine-point lead with under three minutes to go in the third quarter, but Poolesville fought back by tallying nine unanswered points to tie the game 23-23. A foul shot by Quentin Ezell put the Lions up by one with under 20 seconds remaining in the game. Then, Poolesville scored on an inbounds play to make it 30-29. Walkersville broke Poolesville's press as the final 9.2 seconds ticked away, but was unable to get a shot off before the final buzzer. Raynell Ferguson and Quentin Ezell led Walkersville with seven points apiece.
Poolesville's varsity moved to 12-0 by taking down Oakdale by a final score of 46-24. The Falcons had five players score seven or more points and were led by 12 points from David Schramm, 11 points (and nine rebounds) from Kevin Baker and seven points and five assists from Kevin Cabrejas. The Eagles got major contributions from Michael Johnson (seven points), Max Givens and Matt Reeping (six points each).
Oakdale won the jayvee game 26-21. Oakdale led for most of the contest, but Poolesville scored three quick buckets to tie the game at 19-19 in the second half. Oakdale then went on a 7-0 run to put the game away behind two steals, a rebound and a bucket from Vince Croce (game-high 10 points total). Bryon Plummer contributed seven points for the Eagles. The Falcons were paced by eight points from Marty Micheals.
Catoctin and Mt. Airy were both looking for their first varsity win of the season and the Cougars found it, 33-31. Brian Ray had nine points while Kolby Maly and Brandon Peck knocked down eight points each for the winners. Tyler Lederer and Alex Terpening had seven and six points, respectively, for Mt. Airy.
The Cougars also won the jayvee game 44-31. Nick Kistenovic had 11 points for Catoctin. Mt. Airy had eight players score.
Middletown's jayvees pulled off the upset of the day, snatched a 22-20 victory from Windsor Knolls. Middletown got strong inside play from Ben Lewis and Alex Pearl. They added five and three points, respectively. On the outside, Chris Pirone and Sam Michels chipped in six points apiece and both played a solid floor game. William Duddleson led Windsor Knolls with strong inside play and 12 points. Kyle Joyce added five points.
Windsor Knolls defeated Middletown's varsity 33-20. Middletown had a strong first half led by Will Lyons' five points on strong inside play. The Knights led 15-14 at the half. In the second half, Windsor Knolls' man-to-man defense took a toll on the Knights as they were only able to generate five points. Eli Santiago led the Hawks with eight points and Will Lyons led the Knights with five.
Linganore broke away from a 16-14 first half lead to defeat Walkersville 33-22 in varsity action. Jeff Havenstein scored 21 points for Linganore and Scott Morris led Walkersville with seven points.
Walkersville's jayvees beat Linganore in the prelim 32-22. Walkersville withstood a strong second half run from the Lancers. The game's leading scorer was Walkerville's Raynell Ferguson who had 10 points. High scorers for the Lancers were Luke Jackson and Mike Wirtz who each had five points.
Brunswick took the lead from the opening tap and went on to defeat St. John's 45-31 on the jayvee level. The Vikings battled back in the third quarter to within two points only to see the lead extended to nine within thirty seconds. Anthony Chapouris had 11 points for Brunswick, Nick Peifer nine for St. John's.
Monocacy's varsity lost by one point for the fifth time this season in a 29-28 setback against TJ. The Patriots came away with the hard-fought victory as Ryan Lynch hit the big go-ahead three-pointer with 19 seconds left on the clock. The Patriots were led in scoring by Jerry Smith with eight points, followed by Lamont Whims with seven points. Nick Forbes chipped in six points to go along with 11 rebounds. Marques Woodyard played another solid defensive game. The Mustangs were led in scoring by Joel Mattei with eight points and Victory Walker came off the bench to spark the Mustangs with eight points.
The jayvee Mustangs broke open a close game, outscoring TJ 8-1 in the third quarter to gain a 34-23 victory. Monocacy's size was too much for the Pats. Conner Joos lea all scores with 11 points for Monocacy. Ken Wims was the leading score for TJ.
Nathaniel Bowie collected 14 points to lead West Frederick to a 40-27 varsity win over Middletown. Koby Cavenaugh and Kevin Parker each had nine points for the Knights.
Middletown won the preliminary game 38-34. Christopher Pirrone played well for the winners while Sky Baron paced the Cadets.
Poolesville remained unbeaten on the varsity level with a 55-29 triumph over Mt. Airy. Brendon McFall led a balanced Falcons attack with 10 points. Sam Weber and Kevin Cabrejas collected nine and eight points, respectively. Philip Barna and Zach Eldridge each had eight points for the Bulldogs.
The Falcons won the jayvee game 38-15. Poolesville had eight players score and were led by Tyler Holston and Zack Zapata. Both had eight points. Ryan McTavish had 12 points for the Bulldogs.
Linganore was in control throughout in a 46-6 varsity win at Folly Quarter. The Lancers were led by Alex Reifer with 10 points and Andy Anderson with eight points. Dustin Grove played well for the Falcons.
Michael Wirtz had eight points and Travis Wilks seven to help the Lancers to a 41-25 decision in the opener. Blake Heuer notched ten points and Jamie McEvoy eight for FQ.
Michael Johnson and Matt Reeping tossed in ten points each as Oakdale's varsity downed Catoctin 32-17. Brandon Peck had six points and Kolby Maly five to lead the Cougars.
Oakdale's Vince Croce led all scorers with 11 points as the visitors also won the prelim 35-28. Although Catoctin led for three quarters, Oakdale's inside game resulted in a late fourth quarter victory. Nick Krstanovic led the Cougars with eight points.
Oakdale used a late surge to get past MSD 40-28 in jayvee play. The Orioles trailed by just one point early in the fourth quarter before the visitors took control. Bryon Plummer and Vince Croce had 15 and 13 points, respectively, for the winners. MSD was led by Ethan Kramer with 10 points. Todd Bonheyo added eight.
Down 26-17 at the half, Ballenger Creek's varsity battled back for a 36-33 win against Glenwood. Coming off the bench for the Bulldogs, Aikem Brown had a big night with 15 points and teammate Seth Kraham added 10 points for the winners. Glenwood was led by Noah Abramson with 11 points and Gage Trawick added nine points.
The jayvee Bulldogs got the sweep started, using a 14-4 run in the first quarter to ignite a 47-28 victory. Ballenger was led by Derek Macierowski with a game-high 12 points. Ali Azez came out and played a great game scoring 10 points for the Bulldogs. Glenwood was led by Erik Siegfried and Scott Dziwulski with seven points apiece.
In their first varsity meeting since last year's AA tournament championship game, Walkersville outlasted Monocacy 39-38. Despite a buzzer-beater by Mustangs sharp-shooter Brian Healy (eight points) and teammate Joel Mattei's 12 points, the Lions prevailed behind Scott Morris' game-leading 21 points. Teammate Brett Zimmerman added nine points from long range and post man J.R. Ferguson grabbed eight rebounds.
Conner Joos' 12 points led Monocacy to a 31-19 jayvee win over Walkersville. DeAndre Scott added eight for Monocacy. Late-game steals by Walkersville proved to be too little, too late for the cold-shooting homestanders. Orlando Rosa had five points for Walkersville while Quentin Ezell scored four.
Windsor Knolls broke open a close game, scoring 38 second-half points in route to a 64-29 victory over St. John's. The Vikings played an aggressive first half led by big man Jude Merkel with eight points. The halftime score was 26-15 in favor of the Hawks. WK's strong defense in the third quarter broke the game open. All players scored for the Hawks. Leading the way was Will Duddleson and Kyle Joyce with 10 points each and a strong game was turned in by Nick Flanders (eight points). The Hawks got good guard play from Thomas Stuart, Matt Lane and Matt Tarrant. Kyler Rose finished with seven points, including a shot from almost half court to end the first quarter. Merkel finished with 12 for St. John's.
Poolesville's varsity came out of the gate with a 15-0 first quarter run and never looked back in beating Brunswick 53-32. Poolesville just did not miss shots with Kyle Bredice leading the way with 14 points. David Schramm and Kevin Baker added nine and eight, respectively. Brendan McFall did not score many points, but with the focus of Brunswick to stop him, he gave the ball up to his teammates for easier shots. Dillon Johnikin led Brunswick with nine points. Brandon Buhr and Nathan Foltz each added seven.
Brunswick held off a stubbon Poolesville team to win the jayvee game 41-33. Brunswick scored 11 points in the fourth quarter to get the victory. Anthony Chapouris led all scorers for Brunswick with 12 points. Matt Wanger and C.J. Shankle each had eight for Brunswick. Zach Zapata had another fine game for Poolesville with 11 points. Tyler Holston had eight for the Falcons.
Monocacy defeated Middletown 37-32 on the varsity level. It was a closely-played game throughout. Middletown held a two-point lead going into halftime, led by Patrick Ryan with five points. Monocacy tied the game at the end of the third quarter 25-25, led by Kyle Peyton's four points in the period. In the fourth quarter, Monocacy created a few turnovers to take a one-point lead, then knocked down 7-of-9 from the free throw line to secure the win. The Mustangs were led in scoring by Moses Bell with 11 points and Kyle Peyton with eight. The Knights were led by Kevin Parker with 10 and Will Lyons with nine.
The Mustang jayvess brought a fast paced, well-coached, trapping style of play to Middletown and handed the Knights a 37-21 defeat. The Knights executed flawlessly in the first half and took a 14-11 lead into halftime. But, in the end, the Knights were unable to keep Monocacy down as the visitors scored 26 points in the second half. Monacacy had a balanced scoring attack with DeAndre Scott scoring eight points and Connor Joos seven. Darryl Sanders also chipped in six and Evan Campbell five. The Knights were led by Sam Michels again with eight points while Chris Pirrone netted six.
In a game of scoring runs, Windsor Knolls grabbed a 41-27 varsity win against West Frederick. Andy Skowron and Conor Larkin each scored six points in the first half to help Windsor Knolls to a lead of 15-12. Early In the third quarter, the Hawks jump out to 19-12 lead only to see the Cadets go on an 8-0 that included two exciting drives to the basket by Fabian Gonzales for a 20-19 Cadets lead. After a time out, the Hawks went on a 10-0 tear to end the third quarter with a 29-20 advantage. Eli Santiago scored six points in the fourth to help Windsor Knolls secure the win. Gonzales led West Frederick with 12 points and Erich Dylus chipped in seven. Skowron and Santiago led Windsor Knolls with nine points each and Kevin Sowers and Larkin both added six.
The Hawks' jayvees fought off a much-improved Cadets squad and earned a 36-26 victory. The game was tight and at the half the Hawks clung to a 17-15 lead. The Hawks' Will Duddleson scored all eight of the Hawks third-quarter points as they outscored the Cadets 8-4. The Cadets stayed in the game from the foul line, hitting 12-of-20 and pushing the ball up the court. Patrick Walsh was strong on the boards for the Hawks and Kyle Joyce and Aaron Bing each had five points. Duddleson was high for the Hawks with 12 points. Jalen Gee had an outstanding game for the Cadets with eight points and Sky Baron finished with six.
Oakdale pulled away in the second half to score a 39-28 varsity victory over Glenwood. Ryan Dixon played an excellent all-round game and led Oakdale to victory with 17 points. Brendan McMahon led Glenwood in scoring with seven points.
In the prelim, Oakdale defeated Glenwood using a 12-3 third-quarter run to a 45-32 victory. Oakdale was led by Kyle Carpenter with 14 points, including three 3-pointers. Vince Croce and Bryon Plummer added eight each while Tanner Miller and Jaun Retana contributed seven and six points,respectively. Erik Siegfried led Glenwood with 11 points while John Milani and Scott Dziwulski added five apiece.
Linganore used an explosive second half to beat the St. John's 41-26 in jayvee play. The game's leading scorer was Linganore's Mike Wirtz who tickled the twine for 13 points. Alexander Anwar chipped in 12 points and had eight rebounds for the Lancers. Jude Merkel led the Vikings with 11 points.
Windsor Knolls handed Monocacy (11-1) it's first javyee setback of the season by a 41-35 count. Patrick Walsh had game-high of 14 points and Aaron Bing added eight for the Hawks, 10-1. Will Duddleson contributed 12 points for the winners, including eight in the third quarter. Connor Joos led the Mustangs with 14 points.
The Hawks' varsity completed the sweep with a 49-48 win. Kevin Sowers had 18 points for the winners. Joe Mattei had 14 points, Kyle Peyton had 12 and Brian Healy 11 in a losing cause.
Down to six players as four were taking SAT's, Mt. Airy came just one point shy of it's first varsity win of the season, falling short to Brunswick 40-39. Justin Kennel had 15 points and Tyler Lederer 13 for the homestanding Bulldogs. Dillon Johnikin led all scorers with 17 points and Brandon Buhr chipped in with seven for the Railroaders.
Brunswick led the jayvee contest 14-6 at the end of the first quarter, 26-19 at the half and posted a 49-40 win against the Bulldogs. Brunswick was led by Tyrus Lawson's 13 points and Anthony Chapouris' nine points (two threes). Mt. Airy was led by Ryan McTavish with 23 points and Ryan Tate's six points in the fourth quarter.
TJ used a strong second half to down Walkersville's varsity 29-25. Marques Woodyard played a great defense game. The Patriots were led in scoring by the fine all-round play of Jerry Smith with 13 points and nine rebounds. Marques Woodyard chipped in eight points. Nick Forbes led the Patriots in rebounding with 11. Walkersville was led in scoring by Jeremy Musselman and Scott Morris with seven points apiece.
Joe Atmonavage had a key three-pointer and TJ's jayvees were 6-of-9 from the foul line in overtime as the Pats recorded a 37-31 win. The lead went back and forth and was in Walkersville's favor 28-26 when Brian Chase scored on a backdoor layup to tie the game and send it to overtime. Walkersville jumped to 8-5 lead after one. Orlando Rosa sparked the Lions with four of his team-high nine points in the period. TJ bounced back to take a 14-12 lead at the half. TJ was led by Atmonavage and D.J. Ansbro with nine points, Jerron Smith with eight. TJ made a run in the third quarter, connecting on three treys to increase its lead to five points after three periods.
Oakdale won 45-21 against Folly Quarter in varsity action. Oakdale was led by Ryan Dixon with 16 points. M.J. Johnson also had nine points and ran the point very well for Oakdale. Max Givens controlled the board with 10 rebounds. Oakdale came out hot, scoring 14 points in the first quarter and never looked back. Folly Quarter was led by Thomas Neuberth and Dustin Grove with five points apiece.
Oakdale's jayvees came out strong in the second half with a 21-0 run that turned an 8-7 halftime deficit into a 28-8 lead. The final was 40-14. Strong defense by Juan Retana and Bryon Plummer led the second half attack. Vince Croce led seven Oakdale scorers with 15 points and 16 rebounds. Juan Retana added four steals. Tanner Mills had nine rebounds and four steals. Blake Heuer led Folly Quarter with six points.
MSD's aggressive full-court press produced 20 points in the third quarter as the Orioles turned a 7-6 halftime deficit into a 36-25 victory over Poolesville. Ethan Kramer's two quick three-pointers and Todd Bonheyo's eight points highlighted that outburst. From that point on, MSD controlled the offensive tempo for a well-deserved victory against a bigger and taller Poolesville team. Bonheyo finished with 14 points and Shawn Harrington had 12 for MSD. Zach Zapata tossed in 14 points for Poolesville.
Ballenger Creek broke away from a 20-15 halftime lead to defeat Catoctin's varsity 57-21. The Bulldogs went on a 19-2 run in the third period and never looked back. Game-high scorers were Derwin Bowens for the Bulldogs and Catoctin's Kolby Maly, each with 12 points. Sean Brennan chipped in 10 points for the Bulldogs while Brandon Peck had eight points for the Cougars.
The jayvee Bulldogs downed MSD 39-22 after a slow start. MSD went on a 11-2 run in the first quarter and the Bulldogs fought back to lead 15-13 at the half. BC went on a 12-2 run in the third quarter to seal the victory. Derek Macierowski was the only player in double figures for Ballenger. Shocquile Giles added six points for the winners. MSD was led by Todd Bonheyo with six points and Jesse Steingieser and Ethan Kramer added five points apiece.
Crestwood's varsity jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back, defeating TJ 48-24. Mykel Allen had an outstanding game for the Cavaliers, handling the press and finding open teammates for easy scores. Justin Bowens and C.J. Ingram led Crestwood with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Nick Forbes led TJ with eight points.
The Cavaliers outscored TJ 11-2 in the fourth quarter to break open a close jayvee game and win 38-26. Crestwood was led by Shakil Smith with 14 points while Gavin Hughes chipped in with 10 points. TJ was led by D.J. Ansbro with nine points.
Walkersville hosted an athletic West Frederick varsity team and prevailed 43-21 in a fast paced inter-league matchup. The Lions were led by Scott Morris' 18 points, with support from teammate Alex Bodroghy's nine points and eight rebounds. The Cadets attack was led by John Ambush's seven points and the team's 100% accuracy from the free throw line.
The Lions edged the Cadets 30-25 in the jayvee contest. West Frederick relied on zone defense in the first half and man-to-man defense in the second half to slow down Walkersville. As a result of shots not falling for the Lions, Walkersville allowed West Frederick to stay in the game. Walkersville was unable to capitalize on good looks at the basket and West Frederick had problems making free throws. In the closing minutes, West Frederick pulled to within three, but they were unable to get any closer. West Frederick's Sky Baron led all scorers with nine points and teammate Devante Williams chipped in seven. Top scorers for Walkersville included Andrew Voorhis with eight, James Hughes with seven.
In a very well-played and exciting varsity skirmish, Poolesville's Kevin Baker hit two free throws with five seconds left to give Poolesville's undefeated varsity a 33-32 victory over Windsor Knolls. The Hawks led for most of the second half behind the hot shooting of Frank Jarboe, who finished with nine points on three three-pointers. Poolesville took the lead late behind a key blocked shot and then a coast-to-coast bucket by Brendan McFall, who finished with 18 points. Baker finished with 10 points for the Falcons and the Hawks got key contributions from the trio of Ryan Mason, Kevin Sowers and Scott Hunter, each of whom finished with six points.
Windsor Knolls' jayvees opened up a small lead and gradually expanded it en route to a 30-17 win over Poolesville. The Hawks finished the game with nine players in the scoring column and were led in scoring by William Duddleson (eight points) and Aaron Bing (seven points). Zack Zapata scored 15 of the hometeam's 17 total points.
Monocacy's javyees jumped to a 10-0 lead and remained unbeaten with a 38-17 triumph against Glenwood. They utilized a full-court zone press and a 1-3-1 half-court trap to rattle the Glenwood squad. Glenwood attempted to slow the pace with a 2-3 zone, but Paul McLister stepped up and nailed a three-pointer from the wing, forcing the Glenwood zone to adjust to his outside threat. Glenwood stayed within 10 through the second and the early part of the third quarter with courageous efforts off the bench by Nick Wynne, Thomas Bosse and Greg Honchel. Monocacy's superior talent and precision execution proved too much for Glenwood, however, as Monocay opened up a 14-point lead going into the final period and cruised to the win. Monocacy's balanced scoring was lea by Conner Joos with eight points, Brian Uthe with seven and Campell Evan and McLister chipped in five each.
Glenwood turned the tables in the varsity game, defeating Monocacy 36-35 in a very exciting contest that went down to the last shot. Noah Abramson (11 points) made a free throw with four seconds left to give Glenwood the victory. Monocacy's last second shot from the top of the key bounced off the back of the rim. Chad Felix (nine points and eight rebounds) and Zach Wynne (13 points) led the Glenwood attack. Nicholas Medina and Kyle Peyton led Monocacy with five points each.
Brunswick had to step it up defensively to hold off a Folly Quarter fourth-quarter surge as the Railroaders picked up a 42-35 varsity win. Brunswick was led by Dillon Johnikin's 18 points while Brandon Buhr added eight. Brunswick's Nathan Foltz led all rebounders with 10. Folly Quarter's Thomas Neuberth lea with 13 points while Austin Bailey had a good all-round game with eight points and eight rebounds.
The jayvee Railroaders jumped out to an early lead against MSD and held on to win 38-26. Anthony Chapouris led Brunswick with 11 points, Deshaun Imes and Matt Wanger added six points. Todd Bonheyo led all scorers for MSD with 13 points.
Linganore's varsity defeated Mt. Airy 62-30. The game was close in the first quarter, but Linganore's defense forced turnovers the remainder of the game. The leading scorers for Mt. Airy were Eric Struder with 10 points and Zach Eldridge with seven points. Linganore scoring was spread between all twelve team members.
The Lancers' jayvees started the sweep by winning the opener 40-20. The Lancers had 10 players score, led by Alexander Anwar's nine points and nine rebounds. The Bulldogs were led by Ryan McTavish's nine points.
TJ put on a late surge to defeat St. Johns 47-24 in jayvee action. The Vikings held leads after each of the first three periods. Many turnovers by the Vikings in the fourth quarter allowed TJ to claim the win. Joe Atmonavage had 15 points for the winners, Dan Deegan nine in a losing cause.
Catoctin defeated West Frederick for what is thought to be the first time ever and Glenwood flexed its Piedmont muscle against Chesapeake foe TJ in jayvee action.
Landon Routzahn led the Cougars to a 50-46 upset at West Frederick. Sky Baron was the leading scorer for the Cadets. No other details were made available.
Fabian Gonzales had 15 points and John Ambush added nine as the Cadets won the varsity game 47-41. Joshua Kruhm and Brian Ray had eight points each to lead the Cougars.
Glenwood used a strong second quarter to down the Patriots. They outscored the hosts 12-4 in that period to take a halftime lead of 17-8. Erik Siegfried scored all of his game-high eight in the first half. TJ made a run in the fourth quarter, closing to within three points, but came up short. Joe Atmonavage finished with nine points for the Pats. Matthew Hyper played well adding six for Glenwood.
The varsity Patriots rushed out to a 22-11 halftime lead on there way to a 36-23 victory over a tough Glenwood team. The Patriots were led in scoring by Jerry Smith with 14 points, followed by Nick Forbes with seven. Glenwood was led in scoring by Scott Wheeler with 10 points, followed by Noah Abramson with six points.
Brunswick withstood a late Folly Quarter rally and defeated the varsity Falcons 40-34. Brunswick's Dillon Johnikin led all scorers with 13 points and Nathan Foltz chipped in with seven for the Railroaders. Folly Quarters' Kevin Brennan helped keep the Falcons close with his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 17 boards. Thomas Neuberth also added seven for the Falcons.
Anthony Chapouris led a balanced Brunswick jayvee attack with 10 points as the Railroaders took the opener, 52-23. Ryan Aylward, Blake Heuer and Adam Ko all had four points each in a losing cause.
Oakdale's varsity topped Mt. Airy 40-29. Oakdale started out very sloppy and careless. At the end of the first half the score was tied at 17-17. Oakdale used a 13-2 run in the third quarter to pull away. Oakdale was led by Ryan Dixon with 17 points. Matt Reeping and Max Givens controlled the boards with 10 rebounds apiece. M.J. Johnson distributed the ball well with eight assists. Mt. Airy was led by Philip Barna with seven points.
In the prelim, Vince Croce led seven Oakdale scorers in a 46-31 victory over Mt. Airy. Croce had 22 points and 24 rebounds. Ryan McTavish paced Mt. Airy with ten points.
Monocacy defeated Crestwood 52-43 in varsity action. Joe Mattei had 14 points and Victor Walker added 10 for the Mustangs. Justin Bowins was leading scorer for Crestwood with 14 points and C.T. Ingram added 13 points.
The 'Stangs won in jayvee action 53-43. Jacob Park was leading scorer for Monocacy with 16 points. Connor Joos added 13 points and Deandre Scott collected nine. Travon Hoy was leading scorer for Crestwood with 13 points and Andrew Rollins added 10.
Walkersville's varsity came back from eight down at the half to beat host Windsor Knolls 35-34. The Lions kept chipping away at the Hawks lead in the second halfc creating turnovers and holding Walkersville. With 20 seconds to play and clinging to a one-point lead, the Hawks missed the front end of a one-and-one. During the rebound there was a mad scramble for the ball and Scott Morris, who led the Lions with 15 points, came up with a loose ball and went the length of the floor for the winning basket. Kevin Sowers missed a shot at the buzzer for the Hawks. Ego Ferguson also had eight for the Lions. Ryan Mason led the Hawks with 14 points and Frank Jarboe added nine.
In a defensive struggle, Windsor Knolls got past Walkersville 23-19 in the opener. The Hawks started strong, taking an 8-2 lead after one quarter but the Lions fought back and Orlando Rosa hit a three-pointer at the end of the half to cut the margin to 12-11. The game stayed close as the Hawks struggled from the foul line until the fourth quarter when they hit five crucial foul shots to win. The Lions were led by Cameron Farr with eight points and Rosa with five. Kyle Joyce led the Hawks with seven points and Will Duddleson and Aaron Bing had five each.
Windsor Knolls avenged an earlier varstiy loss, dropping Crestwood 47-31. Windsor Knolls shot the ball extremely well and got balanced scoring from Ryan Mason with 15 points, Kevin Sowers and Frank Jarboe each with 11 points. C.J. Ingram had an excellent game for Crestwood with 18 points.
The Hawks overcame a 12-2 first-quarter deficit to defeat Crestwood in a dramatic jayvee contest. Patrick Walsh scored 13 points to lead Windsor Knolls. Aaron Bing chipped in with 10 points. Crestwood was led by Andrew Rollins and Shakil Smith with 11 and 10 points, respectively
Ballenger Creek bolted away from a 7-7 deadlock after one quarter to blitz Catoctin's varsity 45-23. The Bulldogs were led by Derwin Bowens and Shawn Brennan who each had eight points. The game-high scorer and the only player in double figures was Brandon Peck for the Cougars.
The jayvee Bulldogs won against Catoctin by a score of 45-36. The Bulldogs led at the half 20-14. With several turnovers late in the fourth by the Bulldogs, Catoctin was down by just one point with 3:00 to go and both teams went bucket to bucket for the next two minutes. The Bulldogs were led by game-high scorer Derek Macierowski with 12 points and C.J. Winpigler added eight points while Greg Shannon chipped in seven. The Cougars were led by Landon Routzahn who had 11 points and Patrick O'Brien and Nick Maxey both added eight.
MSD won a 39-38 jayvee thriller over West Frederick. It was a see-saw battle most of the way until late in the final quarter when West Frederick surged to 38-34 lead with several quick baskets. After an MSD timeout, Todd Bonheyo hit a quick three-pointer and Shawn Harrington made a layup with a nice pass from Ethan Kramer to give the Orioles a one-point lead with just over a minute remaining. West Frederick called two timeouts, but came up empty-handed. Bonheyo had 17 points and Shawn Harrington 12 for the winners. George Snowden and Jalen Gee had 13 and 12 points, respectively, for West Frederick.
Linganore defeated Middletown 38-32 in varsity play. In a defensive-minded first half, Linganore only managed two field goals and Middletown held a 17-11 led at the half. led by the sharp shooting of Kevin Harris with six points in the half. In the second half, Linganore stepped up the full-court pressure defense. They forced turnovers and had several clutch baskets by Jeff Havestein who had eight points in the fourth quarter alone. The Lancers were led by Havenstien with 10 points and Rick Conner with nine. Middletown had a strong effort from Kevin Harris with 10 points and Will Lyons chipped in eight.
The jayvee Knights had one of its best games, overcoming a seven-point deficit in the last 1:29 to upset the Lancers 28-26 on a buzzer-beater by Chris Pirrone. Pirrone showed outstanding leadership by his enthusiastic play and on-court direction to his teammates while netting 13 points in the win. The final basket was the biggest. Middletown gained possession in a tie game with 19 seconds remaining. On a clear-out play, Pirrone managed to beat his man, get into the paint and get off a shot which rolled around and dropped in as time expired. Seven other players scored for the Knights with Ben Nickey adding three points. Linganore was paced by Alexander Anwar and Michael Wirtz who each scored six points.
Zach Zapata scored the first 11 points of the game and finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds as Poolesville's jayvees beat St. Johns by a final score of 23-18. Fellow Poolesville big man Spencer Barks chipped in three points and grabbed seven rebounds. The Vikings' Nick Peifer led St. John's in scoring with six points. Dan Deegan dropped in five points for the visiting Johnnies.
Windsor Knolls ran past Middletown's varsity 53-18. After a close first quarter, the Hawks used full court defensive pressure to create some turnovers with Ryan Mason scoring ten points as they outscored the Knights 17-4. Ryan Mason led the Hawks with 18 points, Kevin Sowers threw in eight and Andy Skrowon and Frank Jarboe each chipped in five points for the Hawks. Koby Cavenaugh was high scorer for the Knights with six and Will Lyons had three points.
Nine Windsor Knolls jayvee players scored in a 33-13 win over visiting Middletown. Aaron Bing led all scorers with nine points on three 3-pointers. Patrick Walsh had nine rebounds to go along with his three points. Dylan Gardner chipped in five points and Connor Cunningham and Will Duddleson had four points each. Chris Pirrone led Middletown with five points and Michael Pritts contributed three points.
Ballenger Creek's varsity defeated a cold shooting Folly Quarter squad by a score of 45-25. Ballenger's Jack Mazzie led all scorers with 10 points. Kevin Brennan led the wounded Falcons with nine points.
In the jayvee game, Ballenger Creek defeated Folly Quarter 48-10. Ballenger Creek's stifling defense held Folly Quarter to just one basket in the second half. Ballenger was led by Ernie Burrell with 10 points and Folly Quarter was led by Jamie McEvoy with four.
Ten different players scored for Poolesville as they beat Catoctin 56-14 on the varsity level. Kevin Cabrejas led the Falcons with eight points, four assists and five steals. Christopher Cobb scored four points to lead the Cougars.
Catoctin's jayvees hit a couple of late free throws and rode the scoring of Landon Routzahn (14 points) to beat Poolesville 29-26. Zach Zapata again led Poolesville in scoring with 11 points.
John Ambush had 10 points, Fabian Gonzales and Nathaniel Davis nine each as West Frederick notched a 50-28 varsity win at Mt. Airy. Tyler Lederer had nine points and Philip Barna contributed five for the homestanders.
Lakota Tow netted four three-pointers for 12 points that paced the Cadets to a 44-35 jayvee triumph. Sky Baron added 10 points for the winners. Ryan McTavish had a game-high 16 points for the Bulldogs with David Mellstrom, Jake Phillips and Jeff Martin all adding four points.
Glenwood nipped Brunswick's varsity 28-26 in a hard-fought game for both teams. It was tied up with 27 seconds left on the clock. Glenwood scored and then Brunswick got the ball with seven seconds left and got a contested shot off, which fell short. Glenwood's Noah Abramson led all scorers with 11 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Brunswick out-rebounded Glenwood 34-23 with Dillon Johnikin grabbing 17 and Brandon Buhr adding nine. Johnikin scored 10 points while Nathan Foltz added eight.
Brunswick's jayvees survived a fine shooting performance by Glenwood to win 33-32. Glenwood came out firing in the first quarter to take a 9-6 lead on three 3-pointers by Matthew Hyer. Glenwood led the entire game until Brunswick's Stephen McCallum came to life in the third quarter with three straight buckets. Brunswick finally took the lead in the fourth quarter when Glenwood's big man, Erik Sigfried, fouled out. Glenwood missed the final shot with four seconds left. Brunswick had balanced scoring with eight points from C.J Shankle, six points from Stephen McCallum and five each from Anthony Chapouris and Matt Wanger. Glenwood's Matthew Hyer led all scorers with 16 points and Erik Siefried had eight.
Vince Croce poured in 23 points and had 16 rebounds to lead Oakdale's jayvees past St. John's 39-27. Jude Merkel had 12 points in a losing cause. St. John's led in the first quarter only to see their lead disappear. They got as close as two points, but fell victim to too many turnovers.
Windsor Knolls used balanced scoring across the board as they defeated Oakdale 40-34 in varsity play. WK was led by Kevin Sowers who had 11 points. He also did a great job at the point, running Windsor Knolls' offense. Windsor Knolls' intensive man-to-man pressure defense gave Oakdale a difficult time getting into there offense. Oakdale was led by Ryan Dixon with 14 points.
Windsor Knolls fought back from a 22-13 halftime deficit to pull out a 40-34 victory over the jayvee Eagles. Oakdale played a strong first half, holding the Hawks scoreless in the second quarter. The Hawks fought back quickly in the third quarter to cut the deficit to two, 28-26. A tight fourth quarter saw the Hawks go 10-of-18 from the foul line to pull out the victory. Kyle Joyce and Willim Duddleson paced the Hawks with 11 points each. Duddleson went 7-of-7 from the foul line. Vince Croce led the Eagles with 19 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out with 1:38 left in the game.
Pooleville's varsity jumped out to a 19-6 halftime lead on its way to an easy 39-19 victory over TJ. Poolesville was led in scoring by Kevin Baker and Kyle Bredice with 10 points apiece. TJ was led in scoring by Nick Forbes with six points.
In a closely-contested prelim, TJ jumped to an early 9-5 lead, but Poolesville rallied for a 32-30 victory. Zach Zapata,the "Big Man" for Poolesville, was too much inside for the Pats with nine of his game-high 22 points coming in the first half. Poolesville tied the game after three, 24-24. TJ was led by Ken Wims with nine points. The game was decided with 2.3 seconds left with a lob pass inbounds to Zapata for the winning layup. Both teams played well in a good matchup.
Monocacy's varsity defeated Mt. Airy 65-18. Mike Cosley had 16 points for the winners and Moses Bell added 11. Mt. Airy's Landsome, Kennell and Luber each had four points.
In the jayvee game, Monocacy defeated Mt. Airy 51-34. Connor Joos was leading scorer with 13 points and Jacob Park added 8. Ryan McTavish led Mt. Airy with 14 points.
Middletown played an aggressive varsity game against Catoctin, winning 55-24. Catoctin's leading scorers were Brandon Peck with 10 points, Kolby Maly with six and Chris Cobb with five. Koby Cavanaugh played well offensively and defensively, scoring 12 points. Kevin Harris followed with 11 points, nine of those from three-pointers. Will Lyons scored nine points for Middletown.
The Knights also won the opener, 26-19. Despite a strong fourth-quarter rally by the Cougars that cut the lead by three, Middletown held on for the victory. Middletown's leading scorer, Sam Michels, scored eight points while Catoctin's Landon Routzahn held the game-high score of nine points.
Glenwood's jayvees improved 7-1 as they defeated a determined St. John's team 36-32 in a Piedmont division match-up. Glenwood led throughout the contest, building an eight-point lead midway through the first half as they worked the ball inside. St. John's quickly got into foul trouble. However, Glenwood could only convert 6-of-19 free throw attempts as St. John's battled back, cutting the lead to two, 15-13 at halftime. The second half was close all the way as St. John's quickly tied the game and kept within striking distance down to the final seconds. St. John's stayed back in a 2-3 zone as Glenwood worked the ball inside but could not convert easy lay-ups as St. John's challenged every shot. Danny Napolitano and Zack LePage hit back-to-back three-pointers in the third quarter to give Glenwood some breathing room, but St. John's quickly answered with Dan Deejan and Gabriel Sherman scoring in transition. Glenwood took a 25-19 lead into the 4th quarter, but again St. John's tied the game at 27-27 as they broke the Glenwood press with ease. Matthew Hyer scored on a drive and was fouled, converting the free throw to give Glenwood the lead for good. Glenwood was led by Hyer's 12 points. He shot 3-of-8 from the field and Erik Sigfried shot 4-of-14 from the field and 2-of-6 from the line. Napolitano and LePage added five points each. St. John's was led by Deejan with nine points, Sherman with eight, and Nick Peifer with five.
Linganore jumped out to a 17-5 first-quarter lead and held off a second-half rally to defeat Crestwood 48-31 in varsity action. Jeff Havenstein proved to be a tough matchup and led Linganore with 15 points. Andy Anderson added 12 points for the winners. Justin Bowens led Crestwood with eight points.
The Lancers edged Crestwood's jayvees in a well-played, close game 32-28. Neither team could pull away to take advantage as both battled all night. Travis Wilks led the winners with 13 points. Alexander Anwar chipped in with 11. Crestwood was led by Shakil Smith with nine points. Andrew Rollins and Charles Myers added eight points each.
Ballenger Creek's varsity was victorious against the Walkersville 45-31. Game-high scorer was Seth Kraham with 12 points and Kenny Hill added 11 points for the Bulldogs. Scott Morris was the only Lion in double figures with 10 points. Ego Ferguson chipped in eight points and Brett Zimmerman added seven for the Lions.
The jayvee Lions jumped out to a 16-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back, winning 49-34. The Lions had three players in double figures. James Hughes led Walkersville with 13 points and Rosa Orlando and Quentin Ezell both added 10 points. Despite his excellent play in a losing effort, Derek Macierowski was game-high scorer with 17 points for the Bulldogs. Coming off the bench for the Bulldogs, Brandon Willet chipped in nine points.
Unselfish play proved to make the difference for Walkersville as they defeated MSD 38-31 in jayvee action. Led by Orlando Rosa, Walkersville pressured MSD all over the court and converted on offense when they needed it most. MSD tied the game at 30 in the middle of the fourth quarter, but Walkersville would not relinquish the lead once Quentin Ezell hit an eight-footer in the paint to put them up by two with a few minutes to play. Down the stretch, good foul shooting sealed the win for Walkersville. Leading all scorers for MSD was Todd Bonheyo with 14 points while Shawn Harrington added eight. Quentin Ezell scored 11 and Orlando Rosa poured in 10 for Walkersville.
Poolesville's varsity had a rematch with a vastly-improved Folly Quarter varsity squad. While the end result was a 48-27 Poolesville win, Folly Quarter proved to be much-improved since the beginning of the season. Kevin Baker of Poolesville led the homestanding Falcons with 12 points in the win. Folly Quarter was paced by the scoring and rebounding of Dustin Grove who finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. Kevin Brennan also scored seven points for the visitors.
The jayvee Falcons ran up an early 11-point lead and then held off Folly Quarter for the rest of the game en route to a 38-21 victory. Marty Micheals led the Poolesville charge with 10 first-half points. Center Zach Zapata finished with a game-high 14 points. Folly Quarter was paced by the scoring of Jaime McEvoy (seven points) and Ryan Aylward (six points).
After being held to just four points in the first quarter, Brunswick's varsity scored 39 points in the next three periods and recorded a 43-31 win against Catoctin. Brunswick's Dillon Johnikin led all scorers with 18 points while clearing nine rebounds. Catoctin's Joshua Kruhm and Brian Ray each scored eight points while Brandon Peck also grabbed nine rebounds.
Brunswick's jayvees held Catoctin to six second-half points to win 34-15. CJ Shankle led Brunswick with 14 points and Anthony Chapouris had five. Catoctin was led by Landon Routzahn with four points.
Linganore jumped out to a 21-4 halftime lead and ended up claiming a 40-24 varsity win against Glenwood. Linganore had 11 players score and were led by Jeff Havenstein with nine points and Alex Eckard with six. Glenwood was led by Noah Abramson with six points.
Glenwood won an exciting jayvee game 37-32. The contest was close until the very end with Glenwood clinching the game by making 10-of-13 foul shots in the 4th quarter. Glenwood was led in scoring by their big man Erik Siegfried who had nine points. The Lancers were led by Travis Wilks' nine points.
Ballenger Creek defeated Middletown 49-39 on the varsity level. In a closely-played first half, Ballenger was led by Jordan Clayton and Sean Brennan who both had four points in the half. Middletown kept pace with Sam Glusakow's five points and Will Lyons adding six in the half. Ballenger Creek led 25-23 at the half. The third quarter was played evenly between the two teams. Ballenger Creek's Seth Kraham had six points in the quarter on strong inside play as well as Middletown's Sam Glushakow added six points on strong penetrating moves to the basket. The fourth quarter belonged to Ballenger Creek as they held Middletown without a field goal and only seven points from the free-throw line. Coupled with the strong inside play of Seth Kraham and Derwin Bowins, Ballenger pulled away. Seth Kraham and Derwin Bowins led Ballenger with 10 points each and Middletown was paced by Glushakow's 12 points and Will Lyons chipped in 10.
Their jayvee counterparts put on a show that both could be proud of as Ballenger squeaked out a 33-32 decision in overtime. The Knights have really been struggling this season, but put together a solid all-round game. Ballenger was led by Derek Macierowski and his 11 points. Chris Yowell chipped in eight while Greg Shannon and Konnor Gublor each added six points. For Middletown, Sam Michels used his speed to account for 12 points while Jared Curry used his size to add seven.
Michael Johnson had 22 points while Ryan Dixon and Matt Reeping added 12 apiece as Oakdale outpaced Mt. Airy's varsity 57-18. Marty Landsman and Justin Kennel each had six points for the Bulldogs.
Visiting Crestwood withstood a late charge by St. John's to notch a 37-30 jayvee win. St. John's had to play catch-up the whole game with the Crestwood lead ballooning to ten at one point in the third quarter. The Vikings battled back to bring the deficit to only two, but two turnovers gave the Cavs the advantage they needed to put the game out of reach. Jude Merkel led all scorers with 17 points for St. John's. Skahil Smith-Cain led the Cavaliers with 11 markers.
Glenwood's varsity and Crestwood's jayvees lost for the first time this League season, leaving only Poolesville's varsity and Monocacy's jayvees as remaining undefeated teams.
West Frederick defeated Glenwood 45-43 in a very competitive varsity game that went down to the last shot. Brendan McMahon, who finished with eight points for Glenwood, tied the game with a three-point shot with under fifteen seconds left. West Frederick then hit a layup to win it. Justin Kelly hit a big three-pointer and then a two-point shot in the fourth quarter to help West Frederick maintain their lead. Josh Ambush led the Cadets in scoring with 14 points. Glenwood was led in scoring by Gage Trawick with 15.
The Gladiators won the jayvee contest 50-35. West Frederick trailed 25-12 at the half, but got to within eight in the second half before Glenwood regained control. Glenwood came out pressing, looking to force the tempo in the opening minutes, and jumped out to an early 12-6 lead. West Frederick settled in and got the ball to their floor leader, George Snowden (15 points) who pushed the ball up the floor, breaking the Glenwood press and scoring in transition to neutralize Glenwood's pressure defense. With neither team gaining an advantage in the full-court pressure, Glenwood ran their half-court offense with precision, moving the ball on the perimeter and finding their big man, Erik Siegfried, inside. Siegfried led all scorers with 24 points while tallying 14 rebounds and five blocked shots. As the defense collapsed on Siegfried, Matthew Hyer (14 points) and Danny Napolitano (7 points) hit from long range, including three 3-pointers between them to stretch the Glenwood lead to 25-12 at the half. Glenwood maintined the lead until late in the second half when West Frderick, led by Snowden and Sky Baron (11 points) mounted a furious comeback, culminating in Lakota Tow's three-pointer that cut the Glenwood lead to eight.
In a tightly-contested and well-played game, Windsor Knolls handed Crestwood its first loss of the season, 33-28. The Hawks led 12-6 after the first quarter, but the Cavs fought back to with two, 16-14, at the half. The third quarter ended with the Cavs clinging to a 24-23 lead. Kyler Rose hit two long jumpers late in the fourth quarter to help the Hawks outscore the Cavs 10-4 in the last quarter to come out on top. The Cavs hit 8-of-9 from the foul line. Shakil Smith-Cain and Andrew Rollins were outstanding with Cain finishing with a game-high 10 points and Rollins with eight. Patrick Walsh and Will Duddleson dominated the boards and scored eight each with a strong inside game. Kyle Joyce led the Hawks with nine points.
Justin Bowens scored six of his 10 points in the second quarter to help Crestwood take a 14-12 halftime lead in the varsity game and they went on to register a 37-24 victory. Crestwood, with good pressure in the half court, held Windsor Knolls to one shot on most all possessions. Their team defensive rebounding was outstanding the whole game. Clarence Ingram scored nine points in the second half and led Crestwood with 13 points. Ryan Mason led Windsor Knolls with nine and Kevin Sowers chipped in eight.
Monocacy defeated Folly Quarter 52-20 in varsity action. Brian Healy and Mike Cosley scored nine points each. T. Clemants was high scorer for Folly Quarters with six points.
The Mustangs won the prelim 48-12. Connor Joos had a game-high 12 points and Erik Brown added 10.
TJ's varsity raced out to a 22-5 halftime lead, but the Knights never gave up and cut the lead to three late in the contest before the Patriots held on to win 37-34. The Patriots were led in scoring by Jerry Smith with 12, followed by Lamont Whims with 11. Nick Forbes also added eight points to go with eight rebounds. The Knights were led in scoring by Kevin Parker with 10 points, followed by Kevin Harris and Will Lyons with five points apiece.
The jayvee Patriots jumped to 10-0 lead after the first and won 40-22. Ken Wims, with seven points, and DJ Ansbro with six of his game-high 10, led the early blitz. It was 20-4 Pats at the half. Middletown's Zachary Fontentot, Chris Pirrone and Ben Lewis all fininshed with five points apiece. For TJ, Joe Atmonavage finished with six points while Jimmy Dickson dropped in five.
Catoctin put together a great defensive effort but lost to a much taller Linganore varsity 50-29. The leading scorers for the Cougars were Josh Kruhm with 14 points and Brandon Peck with nine. Brian Ray and Brandon Peck rebounded well throughout the game. The Lancers' scoring was definitely a team effort as 11 of their players got on the board. Their top scorer was Andy Anderson with seven points, followed by Jeff Havenstein, Alex Eckard, Kevin Myers and Brandyn Wilkerson each with six.
Linganore won the jayvee contest 48-28. During the first half, both teams played a strong game with Linganore leading at the half, 23-16. Linganore's Alexandar Anwar led all scorers with 16 points followed by Travis Wilks with 11 points. For Catoctin, Nick Krstanovic and Landon Routzahn led the scoring with seven points each.
Jordon Clayton had 14 points and Sean Brennan 11 to lead Ballenger Creek to a 59-22 varsity triumph over Mt. Airy. Marty Landsman (six points) and Justin Kennell (five) paced the Bulldogs.
Ballenger took the jayvee game 51-35. BC was led by Derek Macrerowski who had 12 points at half and finished with 16. Brandon Willett added eight points. Mt. Airy was led by Ryan McTavish with 20 points, 17 in the second half. Ryan MacIvor finished with five.
Oakdale jayvee jumped out to an 11-2 first-quarter lead and defeat MSD in jayvee play, 48-25. The Orioles battled back to cut the lead to 13-8, but that was as close as they would get as Vince Croce poured in 17 first-half points and pulled down 13 first-half rebounds to give Oakdale a 25-12 halftime lead. The Eagles never looked back in the second half as they ran away with the victory. The Eagles were led by Croce’s 24 points, 15 rebounds and three steals. Tanner Mills added 13 points and 10 rebounds. Kyle Carpenter chipped in with six assists. Shawn Harrington led MSD with 14 points. Todd Bonheyo added 11 points.
Crestwood overcame an early eight-point defecit to defeat Ballenger in overtime 38-31. Ballenger jumped on Crestwood early to take an 8-0 lead before Crestwood was able to come back and take a slim halftime lead. Both teams battled throughout the second half, in front of a packed house, until matters had to be settled in overtime. Crestwood outscored Ballenger 11-4 in the overtime period to secure the win. Justin Bowens led Crestwood with 15 points and Arthur Talley chipped in with 11. Kevin Ruzbacki and Derwin Bowins led Ballenger with nine and eight points, respectively.
The Cavaliers' jayvees overcame a 7-4 first-quarter deficit to defeat Ballenger 40-30. Crestwood held Ballenger to two points in the second quarter to grab a halftime lead of 14-9 and never looked back. Andrew Rollins led the winners with 11 points. Trayvon Hoy and Charles Myers each chipped in with eight points. Derek Mazierowski led Ballenger with 10 points.
Ethan Kramer scored two quick baskets in overtime to help MSD secure a 30-26 win against Brunswick. Chad Unger and Todd Bonheyo (16 points, 13 rebounds) had excellent games for the Orioles. Brunswick led all the way until MSD rallied to tie it in the fourth quarter. The hosts led by two with seventeen seconds left when Brunswick's Zack Strauss made a nice shot to send the game into overtime. C.J. Shankle and Anthony Chapouris led the Railroaders with six points each.
Walkersville overcame a 14-point second half defict, scoring 18 points in the final period, to close out with a well-earned 41-38 varsity win against the athletic Thomas Johnson Patriots. Scott Morris led all scorers with 18 points for the Lions and teammate JR Ferguson contributed 11. Jeremy Musselman kept the Lions in the game early on with eight timely points and solid backcourt play. Nick Forbes led the Patriots' attack with 14 points, earned by strong offensive rebounding. Teammate Jerry Smith contributed six points resulting from good defensive full-court pressure. Lamont Whims contributed a pair of three-pointers and Marquis Woodward added an additional six points.
The Lions held off the Pats for a 38-36 jayvee win. After holding TJ to four points in the third quarter, Walkersville began the fourth quarter with a ten-point advantage. Led by the sharp shooting of Ken Wims, TJ scored 19 points in the fourth quarter, nearly taking the victory. Leading all scorers was Ken Wims with 15 points for TJ while Joe Atmonavage poured in nine points. Top scorers for the Lions were Andrew Voorhis and James Hughes, tallying 12 points apiece.
Crestwood took control early and never looked back in posting a 56-20 varsity win against Brunswick. Justin Bowens led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points to pace the Cavaliers. C.J. Ingram and Jeffrey Bryan each added eight points in the victory. Dillon Johnikin led Brunswick with 13 points.
The Cavaliers held off Brunswick in the jayvee game 38-34. Crestwood jumped out to an early lead but Brunswick battled back, taking the lead in the fourth quarter before Crestwood regained control. Shakil Smith led Crestwood with 11 points. Trayvon Hoy and Andrew Rollins chipped in with 10 and nine points, respectively. Brunswick was led by Matthew Wanger with 13 points. DeShaun Imes added 10 points.
Walkersville's varsity fell behind early, but rallied behind pressure defense to defeat visiting Middletown 47-29. Walkersville was led by Scott Morris' 18 points, 12 rebounds and three steals. Brett Zimmerman added eight points for the Lions. The Middletown offense was paced by Kevin Parker's 11 points with support from sharp-shooting Patrick Ryan.
After scoring only two points in the first quarter, the Lions' jayvees managed to pop the lid off the bucket and hit enough shots to win the prelim 35-26. Middletown relied on full court pressure, man-to-man and zone, to stop Walkersville but the Lions chipped away at a seven-point deficit in the first quarter and led throughout the rest of the game. Andrew Voorhis had 12 points to lead the winners. James Hughes added 11. Alex Pearl tossed in nine points for the Knights.
Catoctin ran past MSD 53-31 in jayvee action. Relentless pressure by Catoctin led to a 24-10 halftime lead. For the Cougars, Landon Routzahn led all scorers with 21 points. Nick Maxey had 11 points and played a tough defensive game. For MSD, Shawn Harrington had 15 points and played well inside.
Oakdale led Brunswick 25-15 at the half, 15 by the end of the third quarter and held on for a 36-32 varsity victory. Brunswick rallied late and closed the gap which required Oakdale to put some of the starters back in the game. Leading Oakdale with 10 points each were Ryan Dixon and Matt Reeping. Reeping led all rebounders with 13. Brunswick was led in scoring by Dillon Johnikin with 15 and Nathan Foltz came off the bench to score 10. Johnikin grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Eagles beat Brunswick in an exciting, but ugly, double overtime jayvee game, 39-37. Brunswick was up at halftime 18-14 but Oakdale's half court trap slowed Brunswick and they could not get any offense going. Juan Retana led Oakdale with 12 points and Bryon Plummer had 8. For Brunswick, Tyrus Lawson led all scorers with 15 points and Matt Wanger had 6 for Brunswick.
In a defensive battle, Linganore's varsity beat Ballenger Creek 32-22. Leading scorer for Linganore was Jeff Havenstein with 12 points. Ballenger Creek was led by Seth Kraham and Sean Brennan, each with 6 points.
Ballenger's jayvees, behind Derek Macierowsk's 20 points, held off a late charge from the Lancers to win 35-29. The Lancers were led by Alexander Anwar's 11 points. Kyle Warholic had an all-round great game with eight rebounds, seven points, four assists and two steals for the Lancers.
Glenwood's varsity used a full-court press to jump out to the an early lead and defeated Catoctin 39-25. Leading Glenwood in scoring was Noah Abramson with 14 points and Brendan McMahon with seven points. Brian Ray and Brandon Peck, both with seven points, led Catoctin.
In the jayvee match-up, the Cobras used a full-court press the entire game to come away with a 52-41 victory. It was a physical game with both teams pressing full-court and pushing the ball up the floor on offense. Both teams were in the double bonus early in each half. Glenwood again pounded the ball inside to their big man Erik Siegfried, who accounted for 23 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots. Zack LePage netted a career-high 18 points for Glenwood as he attacked the basket on the press and drained long-range shots from the perimeter. The Cobras' poised point guard Danny Napolitano used quickness and slick ball handling to break Catoctin's pressure, finding Siegfried and LePage down court on the break. Landon Routzahn led Catoctin with 15 points. Routzahn played well inside and out as he handled the ball on the press, scored from the perimeter and drove to the basket in Catoctin's offense.
Windsor Knolls bolted away from an 8-6 lead after one quarter to overwhelm Monocacy's varsity 48-20. Frank Jarboe (two three-pointers) and Andy Skowron (four points) helped the Hawks outscore Monocacy in the second quarter 16-4 and take a halftime lead of 24-10. Ryan Mason, who lead all scorers with 18, scored all eight of the Hawks' first quarter points. Frank Jarboe finished with 10. Forrest Mason had six points to lead Moncacy while Moses Bell chipped in with four.
Monocacy edged Windsor Knolls 31-26 in a jayvee game that was tightly contested game throughout. Uthe scored 10 points for the winners and Thomas Stewart led the Hawks with 10 points.
Poolesville defeated Middletown's varsity 52-31. Poolesville jumped out to a 15-10 first quarter lead on Kevin Baker's nine points in the quarter. Poolesville extended the lead to 32-18 at halftime on the back of Brenden McFall's six points and strong inside presence. In the second half, Middletown was unable to solve Poolesville strong zone defense and fast break attack. Poolesville was led in scoring by Kevin Baker's 14 points and 12 points by David Schramon. Chase Main led the Knights with three three-point shots to end with nine.
The jayvee Knights notched their first win, beating the Falcons 36-29. The Knights were led by Chris Pirrone and his inspiring defense as he keyed on the towering Zack Zapata. Chris also chipped in with nine points and played an excellent all-round floor game. Fifth grader Zack Fontenot displayed his awesome shooting skills while netting nine points. Poolesville was led by Zapata’s 13 points. Colin Dallon scored five as well for the Falcons.
After a very slow start for both teams, St. Johns pulled away for a 38-14 jayvee triumph against Folly Quarter. The Vikings extended their lead to 17 points at the half. Throughout the third and fourth quarter, the Vikings led and finally finished the game winning by 24. Jude Merkel led the winners with 14 points. Michael Arensmeier provided half of FQ's point total.
Monocacy defeated West Frederick 44-35 in varsity action. Forrest Mason led Monocacy with 9 points, followed by Victor Walker and Brian Healy with 7 each. Fabian Gonzales led Frederick with 13 points.
The Mustangs defeated the jayvee Cadets 49-16. Monocacy jumped out to a 14-2 first quarter lead and was up 28-6 at the half. Deandre Scott led all scorers with 15 points. Frederick was led in scoring by D. Williams and S. Barron with four points each.
TJ's varsity went into halftime with a 15-9 margin on there way to a 34-31 victory over a stubborn Linganore team that just wouldn't go away. The Lancers actually held their first lead with 1:01 left in the game. The Patriots then went on a 4-0 run to win. The Patriots were led in scoring by Marques Woodyard and Jerry Smith with 8 points apiece. Brandon Bishop followed with 7 points. Nick Forbes added 12 rebounds and Lamont Whims chipped in with five assists. The Lancers was led in scoring by Brandyn Wilkerson with 9 points, followed by Anderson with 8 points.
In a close jayvee game. TJ trailed at the half 13-9 and dropped a 28-23 decision to the Lancers. Matt Fractio paced the Lancers with six points, Alexander Anwar added 5. Ken Wims led TJ with nine, DJ Ansbro added 6. The Lancers held the lead after three, 21-17. Lucus Jackson hit a three late in the fourth to put Linganore up five.
Oakdale beat Middletown 37-27 in varsity action. Oakdale was led by Ryan Dixon with 18 points. He went 6-for-6 from the foul line. Also for Oakdale, M.J. Johnson had five points, all in the fourth quarter. He played a great game handling the ball and pressuring the ball. Middletown was led by Kevin Parker with 11 points. Oakdale held Middletown to four points in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
In the jayvee game, Oakdale defeated Middletown 35-29. The jayvee Eagles, leading 20-14 at the half, came out strong in the third quarter behind two three-pointers from Kyle Carpenter and a strong defensive effort by Juan Retana and Bryon Plummer to take a commanding 31-18 lead. A quick burst by the Knights' bench in the last two minutes of the game cut a 14-point fourth quarter lead to the final six point victory. Vince Croce paced the Eagles with 17 points and 11 rebounds and was 7-of-8 from the foul line. Carpenter added 11 points, including three three-pointers, four assists, and three steals. Tanner Mills collected 10 rebounds and Juan Retana came away with five steals. Sam Michels led the Knights with 14 points.
Catoctin won its second straight jayvee game by beating St. John's 43-24. Catoctin's constant pressure led to an 18-7 halftime lead. For the Cougars, Landon Routzahn led all scorers with 16 points. Ben Tylicki and Nick Maxey each had eight points. Jude Merkel led St. John's with 13 points while Dan Deegan had five points.
Poolesville outmanned Folly Quarter 67-11 on the varsity level. Brendan McFall and Kyle Bredice led the Poolesville effort with 18 and 11 points, respectively. Kevin Cabrejas fueled the Poolesville offense with 10 points and eight assists. Kevin Brennan scored six points and Adam Brookhart chipped in three to lead Folly Quarter.
Previously winless Folly Quarter prevailed over MSD's unbeaten jayvees 26-25 in a game that was close from start to finish. Folly Quarter was led by Blake Heuer with 9 points and Michael Arensmeier with 8. Zac Brightbill and Jamie McEvoy had 7 rebounds each. MSD was led by Todd Bonheyo with 9 points and by Todd Rewolinski and Shawn Harrington who had 6 points each. Blake Heuer sank a foul shot in the closing seconds to seal the victory for Folly Quarter.
MSD took control with an 11-3 burst in the second quarter and held off a late Glenwood rally to beat the Gladiators 35-33 and take over sole possession of first place in the Piedmont division. Trailing 31-24, Glenwood applied very effective full-court press and scored seven quick points to tie the game with 4.3 seconds remaining. After a timeout, Todd Bonheyo made a layup at the buzzer to give the Orioles the win. Shawn Harrington had 11 points and Bonheyo 10 for the winners. Nick Napolitano had a team-high 11 points for Glenwood. MSD's interior defensive effort that stopped Glenwood's inside play of Erik Siegfried played a key role in the victory.
The last of the Chespeake varsity unbeatens went down to defeat as Linganore let a 10-point third quarter advantage get away in a 36-24 loss to visiting Windsor Knolls. Leading scorers for Windsor Knolls - Ryan Mason (8 points), Kevin Sowers (8 points). Linganore was led in scoring by Jeff Havenstein's 11 points.
In a closely-played jayvee game, Windsor Knolls beat Linganore 27-24. The Hawks were led in scoring by Matt Lane's 6 points. Will Duddelson and Conner Cunningham chipped in 5 points apiece for the Hawks. The Lancers were led in scoring by Alexander Anwar's 7 points and Travis Wilks' 6.
Folly Quarter played a strong second half after falling behind to a stubborn Mt. Airy Team 12-9 at intermission and pulled out a 32-20 win. The Falcons were led by Thomas Neuberth with ten points and Austin Bailey with six rebounds. Marty Landsman had seven points and Eric Struder had seven rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Mt. Airy picked up it's first jayvee win of the year in taking the opener, 36-23.
Poolesville's varsity fell behind early but then ran past Crestwood by a final score of 46-30. The Cavaliers' C.J. Ingram led all scorers with 14 points while Jeffrey Bryan contributed 5 points and 8 rebounds in the losing effort. Poolesville was led in scoring by Brendan McFall and Kevin Baker with 12 points each.
Crestwood's jayvees similarly fell behind in the prelim but outscored Poolesville by a margin of 34-14 the rest of the way en route to a 45-26 win. Trayvon Hoy led Crestwood with 16 points and teammate Andrew Robbins added 11 points in the winning effort. Poolesville's Zach Zapata led all scorers with 21 points in the loss.
Middletown defeated Brunswick 32-24 in varsity action. Middletown held a seven-point lead in the first half, 16-9. The Knights were paced by Kevin Parker's strong inside play with five points and Brandon Buhr of the Railroaders contributed four in the half. In the third quarter, the Railroaders turned several Middletown turnovers into points to cut the lead to 21-20. In the fourth quarter, the Knights regained control of the game with Koby Cavanaugh and Will Lyons chipping in four points each in the quarter. Kevin Parker led the Knights with nine points and Dillon Johnikin of Brunswick led all scorers with 10.
Brunswick rolled to a 39-24 victory in the jayvee contest. The Railroaders were well prepared for the different defenses and presses they saw and broke them down nicely. They also dominated the glass with many second chance opportunities. Brunswick was led by Matthew Wanger with 14 points while C.J. Shankle dropped in 13 of his own. The Kinights were paced by Sam Michels and his 8 points.
Glenwood's jayvees held off St. John's 48-45. For the majority of the game, Glenwood had a commanding lead which reached 15 at one point. St. John's made a run at the end of the third quarter into the fourth with the game coming down to the wire. Glenwood pulled it out in the end, hitting a freethrow late to put them up by three for good. Matthew Hyer paced the winners with 22 points. High scorer for St. John's was Nick Peifer with 17.
Monocacy defeated TJ's varsity, 41-28. Victor led Monocacy with 12 points Brian Healy added nine. Forrest Mason played well for the Mustangs as well.
The Mustangs also won the jayvee game 42-26. Connor Joos had a game-high 15 points while DeAndre Scott added nine points. Joe Armondudge led TJ with eight points.
Billy Hunley's 16-point effort propelled Windsor Knolls to a 45-34 varsity win against West Frederick. Fabian Gonzales and Nathaniel Bowie had 10 and nine points, respectively, for the Cadets.
Windor Knolls also won the jayvee contest 40-24. The Hawks broke open a close game in the second half scoring 18 points in the fourth quarter. The Hawks were led by Patrick Walsh with 12 and Kyle Joyce with 11. Matt Lane also had a solid game, adding 8 points.
Poolesville jumped out to a 8-1 first-quarter lead and notched a 36-23 win against Oakdale's varsity. The Indians extended the lead to 20-8 at half thanks to Brendan McFall's six points (game-high 14 for the contest). Ryan Dixon paced the home team with 11 points.
Poor shooting hurt Oakdale in a 22-19 jayvee loss. Going against a Poolesville 2-3 zone, Oakdale missed numerous open looks at the basket and trailed 21-12 early in the fourth quarter. Oakdale then went on a 7-1 run, behind a full-court press, that closed the gap to 22-19 with under ten seconds to play and the hosts had an opportunity to tie the score but a missed a late three-pointer. Zach Zapata led Poolesville with 13 points. Vince Croce led Oakdale with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Folly Quarter defeated Catoctin 38-25 in varsity action. The Cougars were led by good defensive play by Brandon Peck, who also scored eight points, and by point guard Kolby Maly who was high-scorer with 12 points. Josh Kruhm also scoring five points and play excellent defense. Catoctin had a strong fourth quarter, but came up short. Folly Quarter played a well throughout. Their leading scorer was Thomas Neuberth with 10 points. Tyler Clements was a great ball handler and also scored nine points. Kevin Brennan had eight rebounds and eight points.
In the jayvee game, Catoctin won its first game by beating Folly Quarter 48-22. Catoctin had a balanced scoring attack led by Patrick O'Brien with 10 points, Landon Routzahn with 10 points and Nick Krstanovic with 10 points. A strong first half full-court press resulted in a 28-6 Cougar lead. Folly Quarter's leading scorer was Blake Heverwith with 10 points. Jarett Starbuck and Shaun Whittle both scored four points each.
Glenwood held off a very determined rally by Brunswick in the final quarter for a 36-31 varsity triumph. Glenwood was led in scoring by Zach Wynne with ten points and Sam Arnie with six points. Dillon Johnikin (12 points) and Ryan Bordwine (eight points) played great games for Brunswick.
St.John's downed Mt.Airy's jayvees 33-28. The Vikings were led by Nick Peifer wtih eight points and Jude Merkel with seven. Mt. Airy was led by Chad Ringold (seven points) and David Mellstrom (seven points). St. John's led 13-9 at the half.
crestwood held Walkersville's varsity scoreless in the fourth quarter to overcame a 32-24 deficit and claim a a dramatic 35-32 victory. walkersville, paced by Scott Morris' 20 points, held the lead throughout the game. Crestwood turned up the defensive pressure to secure the comeback win. crestwood was led by Mykel Allen's 14 points. Justin Bowens chipped in with nine points and some excellent defense against Morris in the fourth quarter.
In the opener, the hosts jumped out to a 22-6 first-quarter lead and held off a walkersville rally to win 49-41. Andrew Rollins led crestwood with 19 points. Trayvon Hoy and Gavin Hughes chipped in with 11 and nine points, respectively. walkersville was led by Quentin Ezell with 18 points. James Hughes chipped in with 11 points for the Lions.
TJ's varsity used a 23-6 run in the second quarter to put away Ballenger Creek by a 49-20 count. TJ was led in scoring by Jerry Smith with 12 points followed by Forbes and Woodyard with nine apiece. Whims chipped in with eight points to go along with five assists. Ryan Proctor played a great defensive game to spark the Patriots. The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Sean Brennan with six points.
Ballenger overcame a 24-22 third quarter deficit by outscoring TJ 13-4 in the final frame in a 35-28 jayvee win. Macierowski sparked the Bulldogs with 10 points in the first half and finished with 14. Joe Atmonavage had 11 for the Pats. Ballenger's Green added 11 points.
MSD's jayvees took their third straight decision without a loss by defeating Catoctin 38-25. It was a physical game for both teams. MSD roared to a quick 14-6 lead after the end of the first quarter and maintained that cushion through three periods. The Orioles then doubled-up the Cougars 12-6 in the final stanza to secure the win. Todd Bonheyo (21 points) played an outstanding game for the winners while Shawn Harrington and Jesse Steingieser attacked the boards very well. Landon Routzahn netted eight points to lead the visitors.
Rick Conner's shot a the buzzer allowed Linganore's varsity to upset Monocacy 56-55. Linganore had four players in double figures - Wilkerson, Anderson, R. Havenstein and J. Havenstein. Monocacy had two players in double figures - Rentschler and Cosley.
Behind Brian Uthe's 18 points, Monocacy's jayvees topped the Lancers 43-24. The Mustangs had 10 players get on the board while the Lancers were led by Alexander Anwar's nine points and 12 rebounds. Travis Wilk added eight points.
West Frederick handed Ballenger Creek a 35-28 varsity setback as Fabian Gonzales scored 11 points and Nathaniel Bowie added 10. Sam Lavala hauled down 10 rebounds for the winners. Brennan led Ballenger with 13 points.
Ballenger won the jayvee game 46-33. No other information was provided.
TJ opened with a 9-0 run against Windsor Knolls' varsity and maintained that cushion the entire way for a 35-24 victory. The Hawks could not get back into the game with TJ playing good defense the entire game. Forbes and Whims had eight points apiece for the Patriots and Mason paced WK with six points.
In a similar jayvee start, Windsor Knolls jumped to a 9-1 first quarter lead but the Patriots battled back with a full-court press and cut the lead to 18-16 by the end of the third quarter. The game went back and fourth in the final frame and the Hawks were clinging to a one-point lead when Will Duddleson hit a fast break layup with less than 30 seconds left to secure the win. The Patriots were led by Joe Atmonavage who hit 6-of-8 from the foul line and Ken Wims with seven. The Hawks dominated the boards with the strong play of Patrick Walsh who also had six points. Duddleson finished with 10 points and Kyle Joyce led all scorers with 11.
Poolesville's varsity went overtime in it's season opener to trip Walkersville 35-33. The Lions opened up an early seven-point lead but were outscored 15-6 in the third period as Poolesville took a two-point advantage. Poolesville held a three-point lead until just seconds were left in the game when Scott Morris (10 points) hit a long three to push the game into overtime. Poolesville scored the only bucket in OT to secure the win. Brendan McFall and Kevin Baker scored 10 points each to lead the Falcons and Kyle Bredice chipped in with seven points. Ego Ferguson dropped in 10 points as well for the Lions.
Walkersville opened up a 17-point lead in the preliminary game and won 38-25. The Lions' Quentin Ezell (12 points) led all scorers. Ezell was helped out by teammates James Hughes (7 points) and Andrew Voorhis (6 points). Poolesville had eight players in the scoring column and were paced by Zach Zapata (11 points) and Charlie Smith (4 points).
Crestwood took control early in it's varsity contest against Middletown, leading 21-6 at the end of one period and 37-17 at the half. They went on to a 55-32 triumph. Jeffiey Bryan paced Crestwood in the second half with five points to end with 12. C.J. Ingram also had 12 and Mikel Allen had 10. The Knights were led in scoring by Kevin Parker with eight points and Kevin Harris added five.
The jayvee game was an exciting battle. After the first half, the young Knights held a 16-11 lead as they handled the Crestwood pressure flawlessly. Crestwood, however, came out in the second half with added pressure and shut down the Knights on there way to a 31-19 victory. Crestwood was paced by Andrew Rollins and his 11 points while Middletown was led by sixth grader Ben Lewis and his seven points.
MSD led throughout in claiming a 41-23 jayvee win against St. John's. The Vikings made runs during the game with MSD pulling away, outscoring the Vikes 16-4 in the fourth quarter. Ego Ferguson had 12 points and Scott Morris added nine points as Walkersville's varsity edged Oakdale 38-34. Oakdale was led by Matt Reeping with 12 points and Ryan Dixion had nine. Walkersville led by ten points in the fourth quarter, but Oakdale had a comeback and closed the gap to two points with under a minute to go. Walkersville took great care of the ball and shot well from the foul line to hold on for the victory. Walkersville made 12 foul shots in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
Oakdale scored the final four points of the jayvee contest in the last 30 seconds of play to pull out a 28-24 jayvee victory. Walkersville battled back from a 22-14 deficit at the end of the third quarter to tie the score at 24 with less than a minute to play. With less than 30 seconds left, Kyle Carpenter scored on a bank-shot runner in the lane to give Oakdale a 26-24 lead. Walkersville then missed three shots on it's final possession. A quick foul gave the Eagles the ball at half court with 4.9 seconds left on the clock. Through the tough over-playing defensive pressure of the Lions, the Eagles were able to successfully inbound the ball and score with .5 seconds left to secure the win. Free-throw shooting was a major factor in the game. Walkersville shot 8-for-21 from the line while Oakdale was 0-for-1. Carpenter paced the victors with eight points. Tanner Mills added six points and 13 rebounds. James Hughes led the Lions with eight points.
Linganore got 12 points from Jeff Havenstein to win it's varsity opener against West Frederick. Nathaniel Bowie had nine points in a losing cause.
The Lancers also won the jayvee contest 38-16. No other information was provided.
Monocacy outmanned Catoctin in a varsity game, 70-11. Josh Kruhn had five points to lead the home Cougars. For Monocacy, Kyle Peyton notched 10 points and Blake Sheppard contributed eight. Brian Healy, Moses Bell and Forrest Mason each had seven for the winners.
The Mustangs had a tougher time, taking the jayvee game 39-21. Conner Joos was high scorer for the game with 15 points. Catoctin's Landon Routzahn led the Cougars with eight points. Monocacy led at halftime 20-9 after scoring six straight points. Catoctin played a strong first half. Monocacy had a strong inside game.
Glenwood limited host Mt. Airy to just five points over the second and third periods to pull away for a 50-23 varsity triumph. For Glenwood, Austin Mathews had 14 points, Gage Trawick 13 and Noah Abramson 12. Justin Kennel had a half dozen to pace the Bulldogs while Tyler Lederer added four points.
The Gladiators came back from a seven-point fourth-quarter deficit to nip Mt. Airy 37-36 in the prelim. A three-point shot with nine seconds left completed the comeback. Glenwood was led by Napolitano (nine points) and Seigfried (ten). Mt. Airy was led by Jake Phillips (nine points) and Ryan Mctavish (eight).
The varsity game between Poolesville and Folly Quarter was postponed and will be made up at a later date.
Oakdale's varsity overcame a five-point halftime deficit to defeat Crestwood 34-33 in a tight contest that wasn't decided until a last-second Crestwood shot failed to drop. The hosts finished the regular season at 16-0 as jayvees a year ago. Ryan Dixon paced Oakdale with 13 points while Matt Reeping added 10 for the winners. crestwood was led by C.J. Ingram and Mykel Allen with nine and eight points, respectively.

Forrest Mason had twelve points and Moses Bell added nine as Monocacy's varsity got past homestanding Ballenger Creek 41-34. Jordan Clayton and Sean Brennan had nine points apiece for the Bulldogs.
Monocacy also claimed a jayvee win by a count of 35-29. The Mustangs were led by Deandre Scott with 11 points and Connor Joos added eight. Game-high scorer was Ballenger's Derek Macerowski who had 12 points while teammates Konnor Gubler and Michael Green each chipped in with eight points.
TJ's varsity raced out to a 16-3 first-quarter lead on its way to a 37-23 triumph against visiting West Frederick. TJ was led by Jerry Smith with 13 points and eight rebounds. Lamont Wims had eight points and six assists. West Frederick was led in scoring by Nathaniel Bowie with seven points.
MSD surged to a 20-9 halftime advantage and held on for a 35-27 victory against Mt. Airy's jayvees. Todd Bonheyo tallied 17 points and Shawn Harrington added 10 for the winners. Ryan McTavish paced the Bulldogs with 13 points.
Walkersville relied on tough defense and hot shooting to defeat Brunswick 54-24 in their varsity opener. Scott Morris of Walkersville led all scorers with 25 points while teammate J.R. Ferguson added eight points and seven rebounds. Dillon Johnikin led the Brunswick attack with 12 points.
The Lions also won the preliminary game 34-20. Leading scorers for Walkersville were Quentin Ezell with 13 points and Cameron Farr with nine. Leading scorers for Brunswick were DeShaun Imes six points and Tyrus Lawson with five. Walkersville only allowed Brunswick two points in the fourth quarter.
Glenwood's varsity defeated Folly Quarter 36-11. Zach Wynne led the Cobras with nine points and Brendan McMahon added six points. Nick Kaminski led Folly Quarter team with five points. Kevin Brennan paced Folly Quarter with four rebounds.
Matthew Hyer poured in 20 points to lead Glenwood to a 50-39 victory in the jayvee game. Hyer shot 6-of-11 from the field, including 1-for-1 from 3-point range and 7-of-7 from the foul line. Glenwood used a full-court press to open a 20-point lead in the first half. Folly Quarter battled back to cut the lead to six points. Folly Quarter was led by Ryan Aylward and Michael Arnesmeier with 10 points each. Eric Siegfried added 10 points for Glenwood.
Brunswick outscored Mt. Airy 13-3 in the third quarter and went on to win its first varsity game of the season by a 38-23 count. The game was tied 16-16 at the half. Mt. Airy dominated the boards 37-28. Brunswick's Nathan Foltz led all scorers with 11 points followed by Dillion Johnikin eight eight and Paul Walters seven. Dillon Johnikan also led all rebounders with eight. Mt. Airy was led in scoring by Marty Landsman's nine points. Alex Terpening and Tyler Lederer each grabbed seven rebounds for Mt. Airy.
Brunswick jumped out to a 9-0 first-quarter lead and stretched it to 15-3 at the half in winning the jayvee contest 33-23. CJ Shankle had 14 points and DeShaun Imes six for the winners while Ryan McTavish notched eight points and Jake Phillips added four in a losing cause. Mt. Airy closed the gap by scoring 12 points in the forth quarter. CJ Shankle had an overall good game for Brunswick.
TJ outscored West Frederick's jayvees 7-0 in the third quarter and went on to gain a 31-23 opening-game victory. TJ jumped to a 13-10 lead after the first quarter, paced by Brian Chase with five points. TJ claimed a halftime lead of 20-14. DJ Ansbro and Matt Lawrence were the leading scorers for the Pats with six points apiece. Also contributing for the Patriots were Ken Wims with five points, Joe Atmonavage with seven assists and three steals and Danny Misotti with four points. West Frederick was led by G. Snowden with eight points, Jalen Gee with five.
Monocacy's jayvees defeated St. Johns 41-14. Evan Campbell led Monocacy with eight points. Brian Uthe played well for the Mustangs. Dan Deegan led St. John's with five tallies.
