BALLENGER CREEK, WEST FREDERICK WIN TITLE GAME THRILLERS - 03/17/03

Ballenger Creek won the varsity game at the buzzer and West Frederick the jayvee contest in the closing minutes as a pair of thrilling conference tournament championship games concluded the 2002-03 season.

Dante Stansbury supplied the heroics for the Bulldogs as his put-back of a missed shot attempt by Randall Smedley stunned #1 seed Windsor Knolls, 61-60. It provided Ballenger Creek it's first tournament title in 12 years of conference play.

Mike Hall, who had an exceptional night for the CMC regular season champion Hawks with 25 points, had given Windsor Knolls a 60-59 lead with 26 seconds to play. Kevin Henry led the winners with 13 points and was named the varsity tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

It was the sixth consecutive year that the varsity tournament's #1 seed was unable to win the tourney crown.

West Frederick's Christopher Hall sealed a 31-27 jayvee title game victory over Monocacy, following up his missed free throw with a short jumper in the lane with 11 seconds to play. Most Outstanding Player recipient Ernest Woods had snapped a 27-27 tie with a baseline jumper with just over a minute left in the contest.

It was the second jayvee tournament title for the Cadets in the last four years.

IT'S #1 vs. #2 IN THE VARSITY AND JAYVEE FINALS - 03/16/03

Dan Mulhern and Zach Kabetz both had 13 points as top-seeded Windsor Knolls defeated West Frederick's varsity 52-41 to earn a spot in the championship game. Steve Custis and Q'Monte Matheny tallied 10 points apiece for the Cadets.

Ballenger Creek's varsity downed TJ 79-53, using a 19-2 run in the first quarter to put the game away early. Ballenger was led by Luis Machado and Kevin Henry, both with 21 points, while Brian Sweeney collected 14 points. TJ was led by Sean Roscoe with 16 points, Brandon Rascoe with 13 points and Jubari Brown with 15 points.

Number one jayvee seed West Frederick started strong, taking a 15-7 lead after one quarter and built on it from there in taking a 48-29 verdict from Ballenger Creek. Ernest Woods totalled 24 points and Christopher Hall added 11 for the winners. Brian Kidd netted 12 points and Mikey Leizear 10 for the Bulldogs.

Monocacy earned a spot in the jayvee finals with a 49-36 victory over Poolesville. Darrick Scott was the leading scorer for the Mustangs. No other details were made available.

TOP TWO SEEDS ADVANCE TO FINAL FOURS, BUT #3's AND #4's STUMBLE - 03/15/03

Mike Jarboe and Mike Hall had 15 points apiece to lead varsity top seed Windsor Knolls to a 58-34 victory over Walkersville.

Ballenger Creek defeated St. John's varsity 73-34. Ballenger led 36-14 at half and never looked back. The Bulldogs were led by Kevin Henry with 19 points, A.J. Gardner with 11 points and Dante Stansbury with 10. St. John's was led by Matt Stephey with 14 points and Paul Crone with 10.

West Frederick trailed Oakdale 10-6 after one quarter but exploded to take a 57-29 varsity decision. Travon Vann led the winners with 16 points while Steve Custis had eight points and a number of steals. Robert Bennett netted 12 points and Phil Monteau 10 for Oakdale.

TJ routed Monocacy's varsity 54-24. Brandon Rascoe and Artez Smallwood led TJ with 13 points each while Cody Morris chipped in with eight.

Jayvee top seed West Frederick broke away from a 16-16 halftime tie to defeat stubborn Middletown 39-26. Ernest Woods netted 17 points for the winners while Michael Riggin had a team-high seven points for the Knights.

Ballenger Creek defeated Walkersville's jayvees 41-34. Down 13-2 at the end of the first quarter, the Lions rallied to within four points late in the game. Ballenger was led by Mickey Leizar with 13 points and Kirk Fox with 11. Leading the way for Walkersville were Kevin Jandovitz with 11 points and Chad Benford with 10.

Monocacy's jayvees downed Linganore 44-35 and Poolesville upset TJ 55-48. No additional details were provided on either game.

VARSITY ELITE EIGHT JOINED BY TRIO - 03/14/03

St. John's survived three overtimes to edge Middletown in a 46-45 thriller. The game was tied 30-30 after regulation, Kevin Shaffer hit a three-pointer for St. John's to second the game in the second OT and Middletown's Ty Main duplicated that feat to advance it into a third. With 10 seconds to go in the final overtime, Vikings' Joe Winters hit two critical free throws to give St. John's a four point advantage, negating another three by Main as time ran out. High scorers for the night were Joe Winters, who had 16 points for the Vikings, and Main with 22 for the Knights.

Oakdale, 2-18 on the regular season, won it's second tournament game in three days by upsetting Poolesville 36-32. Robert Bennett and Phil Monteau collected 13 points for the winners while Andrew Rhodes added 12. Jay Lowe had 10 points and Jason Kramek eight for the Falcons.

TJ defeated MSD 56-46. The Patriots were led by Cody Morris with 17 points and Artez Smallwood with 12. MSD was led by Scott Lehman with 28 points and Kevin Berrigan with 10.

THREE JOIN JAYVEE ELITE EIGHT - 03/13/03

Middletown erased an 11-point fourth quarter deficit and went on to stun host Brunswick 50-44 in overtime. Brunswick was fouled as time expired in regulation, but missed both foul shots with no time on the clock. Middletown made four crucial free throws down the stretch to win in overtime. The Knights were led by Michael Oursler with 17 points. Brunswick was led by Austin Darling who had 16.

Ballenger Creek opened up a 22-10 haltime lead and went on to defeat Oakdale 49-30. Ballenger was led by Mikey Leizear with 14 points and Kirk Fox with nine points. Oakdale was by Kevin Burkhardt with nine points and Sterling Halfors with eight.

Poolesville defeated St. John's 50-12. No other details were provided.

VARSITY BRACKET HAS FOUR FIRST-ROUNDERS ADVANCE - 03/12/03

Kevin Berrigan poured in 25 points, including five three-pointers, and Scott Lehmann added 16 points as MSD trimmed Brunswick 47-45 in it's tourney opener. The Orioles trailed 21-15 at the half, but warmed up after intermission including an 18-12 advantage in the fourth quarter. Grant Wilson had another outstanding game for the Railroaders with 18 points while Dustin Ondrejko contributed 11 points.

Walkersville defeated Catoctin 53-32. The Lions were led by Ryan Nusbaum's 12 points. He was backed-up by eight other Lion players in the scoring column. Catoctin was led by Josh Chmelik's 10 points.

Middletown got past Glenwood 53-32 in it's opener as Ty Main collected 12 points, Pat McCarrick 10 and Jeramie Parker a career-high nine points. Nick Marshall completed an excellent year for first-year Glenwood, leading all scorers with 16 points.

Andrew Rhodes tallied 11 points and Robert Bennett offered 10 as Oakdale doubled up Linganore 42-21. Josh Hoyle had eight points in a losing cause while Jeremiah Cook and Zach Cratty chipped in with five points each.

LOWER SEEDS WIN TWO OF THREE JAYVEE TOURNEY FIRST-ROUNDERS - 03/11/03

St. John's won it's first League game of the season and Linganore defeated Windsor Knolls for the first time in three League tries as lower seeds pulled upsets in two of three jayvee tournament first-round games. First-year Oakdale outlasted Catoctin in the third contest.

Matt Shekletski and Brendan Engle scored eight points apiece to lead the Viking's 27-25 upset of the Gladiators. Phil Ashtainie led all scorers with 15 points for Glenelg.

Josh Mayne scored on a put back of a missed free throw with 17.1 seconds left to give the Lancers their hard-fought 35-33 victory. The Lancers jumped out to an early 15-6 lead, but the Hawks trimmed it to 17-14 at the half. The lead changed hands in the fourth quarter until Mayne's heroics. Windsor Knolls had one last chance, but could not score at the buzzer. Vinnie Weaver sparked the Lancers with 15 points, including four three-point shots. Mayne added nine points. The Hawks were led by Adam Klink with 10 points. Greg Anderson came off the bench and had an outstanding game, keying the Hawks defense.

Led by Riley Cook’s 13 points, seven of which came in the fourth quarter on a three-pointer and 4-for-4 from the foul line, Oakdale broke away from a 10-10 halftime tie to defeat Catoctin 26-18. Mattie Thompson led Catoctin with ten points.

HAWKS EDGE CADETS FOR CMC CROWN, #1 VARSITY TOURNEY SEED - 03/09/03

Mike Hall had 14 of his game-high 22 points in the second half as Windsor Knolls held off a strong finish by West Frederick, claimed a 66-63 win the clinched the CMC varsity championship and top seed for the year-end tournament. Jim Roche and Brad Thompson added 10 and nine points, respectively, for the Hawks. Q'Monte Matheny had 20 points and Chris Thompson 19 to lead the Cadets who converted 19 of 27 foul shots.

In a close jayvee game, the Cadets earned a 38-35 victory. West Frederick withstood a late fourth quarter rally to hold on to the victory. Tyler Murray paced the Hawks with 11 points and Ernest Wood led all scores for the Cadets with a game-high 16 markers.

Ballenger Creek doubled up Oakdale's varsity 48-23 with Daniel Shannon and Brian Sweeney leading the way with 10 points apiece. Robert Bennett totalled 12 points for Oakdale and Phil Monteau added nine.

The Bulldogs jayvees defeated Oakdale 45-32 behind 17 points from Mikey Leizear. Riley Cook led Oakdale with nine points.

St. John's went to overtime to nip Brunswick's varsity 54-52. Bart Sapp had 15 points to pace the Vikings while Joe Winters added 13 points and Paul Crone 10. Brunswick also had three players in twin digits as Grant Wilson tallied 16 points, Dustin Ondeijko followed with 14 and Oliver Short contributed 11 points.

Brunswick won the prelim 44-19. Nathan Smith netted a team-high 10 points for the Railroaders. Anthony Oliverio and Brendan Engle had six points apiece for the Vikings.

TJ downed Linganore in varsity action, 35-17. Brandon Rascoe scored 10 points to lead the winners while Zach Cratty had seven points in a losing cause.

The Patriots also won the jayvee contest in overtime, 45-44. Donald Dawson's 12 points led TJ. Josh Mayne and Vince Weaver had 15 and 10 points, respectively, for the Lancers.

Glenwood scored its largest varsity victory of the season with a sound defeat of Catoctin, 47-23. Carl Braun led the Gladiators with 16 points while Nick Marshall and Doug Parker contributed 15 and 11 points, respectively. Josh Chmelik led Catoctin with seven points.

Phil Ashtianie led Glenwood to a 46-31 win in the jayvee contest with 25 points. Adam Cordell scored six points to lead Catoctin.

Walkersville came from seven points down at the half to earn a 31-26 varsity win against Middletown. Jsoh McCarrick led the Knights six points. Rickey Smith and Daniel Mawrey had 12 and nine points for Walkersville.

Sean Abercrombie made three clutch free throws down the stretch to help the Lions' jayvees take a 38-35 verdict.

POOLESVILLE VARSITY, WEST FREDERICK JAYVEES CLINCH DIVISIONS - 03/08/03

Poolesville's varsity followed up it's jayvee MVAL championship of a year ago by adding this year's varsity crown to it with a 40-26 win against St. John's. The Falcons jumped to a 21-3 halftime lead and never looked back. Jay Lowe was high scorer with 14 points, followed by Matt Ray with 10. James McCollum had 10 rebounds for the Falcons, point guard Matt Weber handled the ball well and Wes Ketchum added several key steals. For the Vikings, Paul Crone netted 10 points and Matt Stephey added seven.

The Falcons won the jayvee game 54-20.

West Frederick's jayvees survived a 29-27 scare by Linganore to clinch the CMC division championship and top seed for the year-end tournament. Ernest Woods netted 16 points for the winners and Josh Mayne had 14 in a excellent game for the Lancers.

Q'Monte Matheny led all scorers with 17 points as the Cadets won the varsity contest 40-25. Zach Cratty had five points for Linganore.

Brunswick withstood a 23-point (four three-pointer) barrage by Glenwood's Nick Marshall to defeat the Gladiators' varsity 50-34 and earn it's first sweep of the season. Grant Wilson had 12 points and Evan Chaney eight for the Railroaders.

The Railroader jayvees got 20 points from Austin Darling and 12 from Andrew Simpson in winning the prelim 42-30. Michael Silas and Phil Ashtianie had 14 and 13 points, respectively, in a losing cause.

Mike Jarboe and Mike Hall had 12 and 11 points, respectively, as Windsor Knolls notched a 51-37 varsity win against Oakdale. Robert Bennett and Phil Monteau had nine points apiece for the hosts.

With nine players scoring, paced by Tyler Murray’s nine points, Windsor Knolls defeated Oakdale's jayvees, 37-25. Riley Cook led Oakdale with 10 points.

MSD EDGES WALKERSVILLE BY THREE - 03/07/03

MSD held off a late charge by Walkersville to defeat the Lions 42-39. MSD's Kevin Berrigan led all scorers with 21 points, hitting four clutch three-pointers. Daniel Fava added 12 points for the winners. Ryan Nusbaum had 10 points for Walkersville, with eight more added by teammate Bruce Gaines.

WINDSOR KNOLLS, BALLENGER STREAK ONWARD - 03/06/03

Windsor Knolls took down Linganore 40-19 in varsity play. Mike Jarboe had 12 points for the Hawks and Jeremiah Cook had 14 for Linganore.

The Hawks bolted to a 11-0 first-quarter lead and and went on to win the jayvee game 44-37. The Hawks were led by Chris Patton with 12 points, Tyler Murray with 11 and Andrew Stephens with 10. Vince Weaver led all scores with a game high 17 points.

Ballenger Creek's varsity defeated Oakdale 54-30. Kevin Henry scored 15 of his game-high 23 points in the first half as Ballenger led at the half, 23-12. Ballenger went on to open up a 35-19 third quarter lead. Henry also had 18 rebounds. Daniel Shannon scored eight points for Ballenger. Andrew Rhodes had eight points for Oakdale.

BC won the javyee game 46-31. High scorers for Oakdale were A.J. Thoreson with nine points and Alex Medd with seven. Ballenger's high scorer was Mikey Leizear with 16 points.

Poolesville made both one-and-one foul shots with six seconds remaining and a three-point attempt by MSD failed at the buzzer in a 30-27 thriller. Kevin Berrigan and Brandon McMillan had seven points each for the Orioles. James McCollum had nine for the Falcons.

COUGARS, LIONS CLAW TO ONE WIN EACH - 03/05/03

Catoctin scored the winning bucket with 37 seconds remaining to defeat Walkersville's varsity 33-32. Josh Chmelik of Catoctin led all scorers with 12 points, followed by teammate Brian Woodward with 11. Erik Kemerer had 10 points and 16 rebounds for Walkersville.

Walkersville won the jayvee contest 43-27. Kevin Jandovitz led the Lions with 13 points. Jordan Dixon scored eight and Alden Tuck had seven points for Walkersville. Catoctin was led by Justin Albright and Zach Little with six points each.
