Mid-Maryland Boys 2002-03 Weekly Wrap-ups

WALKERSVILLE JAYVEES FIRST TO CLINCH - 03/02/03

Kevin Jandovitz poured in 20 points, including six three-point field goals as Walkersville's jayvees defeated Brunswick 48-34 to win the MVAL division title. Austin Darling had 19 points for Brunswick, which trailed by just five points, 30-25, going into the final period.

Walkersville also broke away late in the varsity game, using a 15-5 run in the fourth quarter to register a 41-28 victory. For the Lions, D.J. Mowery tallied 14 points while Grant Wilson totalled 14 for the Railroaders.

MSD played a great game and outlasted St. John's in a physical, high-scoring varsity contest 52-46. The Orioles were led by Scott Lehmann with 18 points and Kevin Berrigan with 22. The Vikings' Paul Crone and Bart Sapp had 18 and 12 points, respectively.

Poolesville's big men led the way as the Falcons' varsity defeated Middletown 37-27. Matt Ray netted nine points, James McCollum scored eight and Matt Conley contributed five points. Middletown trailed from the outset, but closed to within five points with an aggressive press. Patrick McCarrick led Middletown with nine points and Tyler Main added eight.

Middletown had an outstanding defensive effort in winning the jayvee game 35-21. Michael Oursler had 14 points to pace the winners while three players had four points each for Poolesville - Chris Cabrera, Mark Fales and Marcus Prince.

WALKERSVILLE JAYVEES ONE AWAY FROM CLINCHING - 03/01/03

Walkersville's jayvees moved within one game of clinching the MVAL title with a 42-31 victory over Glenwood. Walkersville was led by the outside shooting of Sean Abercrombie (10 points) and Daniel McCollough (6). Glenwood center Phil Ashtianie scored 15 points in the losing effort and Patrick Mohl contributed four points.

The Lions pulled away in the second half for a 55-23 win. They led by just eight, 23-15, at intermission. Ryan Nusbaum led Walkersville with 16 points. Nick Marshall scored 13 points for Glenwood.

Kevin Berrigan tallied 22 points and Scott Lehmann added 15 as MSD trimmed Brunswick 55-44. Grant Wilson paced the Railroaders with 12 points.

St John's varsity used a balanced attack to defeat Catoctin 49-28. St John's had eight players score. John O'Donaghue led the way for the Vikings netting 13 points. Bart Sapp poured in 10 to help out. Catoctin was led by Brian Woodward's seven points.

Catoctin put nine players in the scoring column in taking the jayvee game 33-13. Brenden Engle was the St. John's high scorer with eight points. Phil Tylicki had a hot hand in the first half, scoring all of his team-high seven points.

TJ defeated Oakdale in varsity action, 43-28. The Pats raced out to a 16-4 first quarter lead. TJ was led by Brandon Rascoe with 10 points, Artez Smallwood with nine and Cody Morris with eight. Oakdale was led by Robert Bennett with eight points and Andrew Rhodes with six.

The Patriots took control in the second quarter of the jayvee game and won that one 43-25. Oakdale led 10-6 after one, but it was all TJ after that. Steven Powell led TJ with 17 points, Steven Chase added eight and Ian Hahn had seven. Sterling Hallfors led Oakdale with nine points and Kevin Burkhart contributed five.

ST. JOHN'S, GLENWOOD SPLIT A PAIR - 02/28/03

The St. John's varsity defense shut down Glenwood 60-13. Matt Stephey, Kevin Shaffer, Chris Davenport and Joe Winters came up with multiple steals for the winners. Paul Crone led the Vikings' offensive attack with 20 points while Bart Sapp netted 11. Nick Marshall led the scoring for Glenwood.

Phil Ashtianie poured in 17 points to lead the Gladiators to a 45-19 victory in the jayvee contest. Frank Sapp and Anthony Oliverio had four points each for St. John's.

POOLESVILLE TAKES TWO FROM CATOCTIN - 02/27/03

In a game that had several lead changes in the last two minutes, Poolesville's James McCollum scored three the old fashioned way with eight seconds left to give the Indians a 39-37 win. Derek Woelfel led the Cougars, netting 15 points and grabbing six steals. Josh Chmelik helped the Cougars' cause scoring 12 points, all from behind three-point line. Poolesville was led by Jay Lowe's 13 points and excellent defense.

Poolesville's jayvees broke away from a 11-8 lead after one quarter to a 29-12 lead at the half and went on to register a 47-26 victory. Chris Cabrera and Marcus Prince provided the scoring punch for Poolesville with 13 and 10 points, respectfully. Catoctin was led by Adam Cordell with a team-high eight points.

MSD GETS IT IN GEAR AGAINST GLENWOOD - 02/24/03

MSD roared to a 38-9 halftime lead and defeated Glenwood's varsity 55-33. Scott Lehmann netted 27 points and Kevin Berrigan 17 for the Orioles. Nick Marshall had 19 points to pace the Gladiators.

WEST FREDERICK, WALKERSVILLE JAYVEES GRAB BIG WINS - 02/23/03

West Frederick's jayvees took over the CMC division lead with a 33-31 victory over Monocacy. Earnest Woods had 18 points for the Cadets and Lewis Cotto had seven for Monocacy.

The Cadets also won the varsity game by a 56-36 margin. Chris Thompson led a balanced scoring attack for the winners with 12 points, Travon Vann had 10 points.

Walkersville put some distance between itself and MVAL runner-up Poolesville with a 36-32 triumph over the Falcons. Sean Abercrombie had 13 points to lead the Lions while Mark Fales netted 11 for Poolesville.

Poolesville's varsity defeated Walkersville 43-27. Matt Ray led the Falcons with 13 points and James McCollum contributed nine. Jesse Burton and Matt Conley added a strong defensive effort for Poolesville. Rickey Smith led Walkersville with five points.

St. Johns slipped past Middletown's varsity 33-29 as Paul Crone had 16 points. Pat McCarrick had 12 points for the Knights who were 0-for-8 from the foul line in the pivotal third quarter.

Middletown won the opener 34-12. Nick Rutten paced the Knights with nine points while Anthony Oliverio and Ryan Dutton-O'Hara had four points each for the Vikings.

Glenwood scored it's first varsity victory of the season with a 43-38 overtime decision against Brunswick. Leading scorer for Glenwood was Nick Marshall with 15 points. Leading Brunswick was Grant Wilson with 13 points. Marcus Henderson of Brunswick hit a half court shot to end the 3rd quarter.

Brunswick won the preliminary game 32-22 as Austin Darling scored nine points. Phil Ashtianie led Glenwood with 20 points.

TWO DOUBLEHEADERS END IN SPLITS - 02/22/03

Offensive rebounding made the difference as Ballenger Creek's varsity defeated West Frederick 54-46. Luis Machado exploded in the second half for 14 of his 16 points for the Bulldogs. Kevin Henry added 10 points. Q'Monte Matheny and Travon Vann had 18 and 11 points, respectively, for the Cadets.

West Frederick won the jayvee game 39-34, bolting to a 25-11 halftime lead and holding on as Ballenger got to within three points in the second half. Ernest Woods had 11 points and Larry Bowens 10 for the Cadets. For BC, Mikey Leizear totalled 12 points and Tyler Rakich added 10.

Catoctin's varsity defeated visiting Brunswick 45-37. Catoctin was led by Brian Woodward's 17 points. Derek Woelfel helped out the Cougars with nine points and six steals. Brunswick was led by Dustin Ondrejko's nine points and Grant Wilson's eight points, six coming from the the foul line.

Brunswick outscored the Catoctin 10-2 in the third quarter to take control of the jayvee game in winning 36-23. Brunswick was led by Austin Darling with 14 points. Brunswich helped its cause by making 13-of-19 from the charity stripe. Catoctin's high scorer was Justin Albright coming off the bench to score seven points.

TJ, MONOCACY SPLIT - 02/20/03

TJ's varsity ran past Monocacy 54-18. TJ was led by Brandon Rascoe with 16 points, Jabari Brown with 11 and Seab Rascoe with 9. Giddeon Obamyoni led Monocacy with 10 points.

Monocacy outscored TJ 16-4 in the third quarter of the jayvee game in winning 34-24. Danny Foit had eight of his 12 points during that decisive quarter and Derrick Scott added 10 points for the winners. Iman James led the Pats with 10 points and Ian Hahn contributed six points.

WEST FREDERICK, MONOCACY SWEEP PAIR - 02/15/032

West Frederick ran past TJ's varsity, 54-39, combining a good defensive and rebounding effort with 13-of-19 accuracy from the free throw line. Steven Curtis led a balanced Cadets scoring attack with 14 points while Q'Monte Matheny added 13 and Travon Vann 10. Artez Smallwood and Brandon Rascoe collected 10 points each for the Patriots.

A 13-2 burst in the second quarter was the difference in the jayvee game as the Cadets won a 43-30 verdict. Ernest Woods and Larry Bowens had 15 and 11 points, respectively, for West Frederick. Steven Chase and Iman James each had eight points in a losing cause.

Gideon Obamyami had 20 points to lead Monocacy past Linganore's varsity. Scott Gilson also nailed three treys for nine points and Dennis Williams had eight points for the Mustangs. Jeremiah Cook led the Lancers with nine points and Josh Hoyle offered up eight.

The Mustangs roared to a 21-0 lead after one quarter and coasted to a 49-26 victory. Dan Foit had 14 points while Denzel Randolph added 12 for the winners.

BULLDOGS AVENGE LOSS TO MUSTANGS - 02/13/03

Ballenger Creek's avenged an earlier varsity loss by defeating Monocacy 59-46. Ballenger Creek jumped out to an early first half lead at 16-8. Monocacy battled back to close the gap to 22-19 at half. Ballenger Creek opened up the lead to 37-31 at the end of the third quarter. Ballenger was led by Luis Machado with 24 points and Dante Stansbury with 11 points. Monocacy was led by Matt Foley with 15 points and Gideon Obamwonyi with 11 points.

Monocacy won the jayvee contest 41-21. Monocacy's high scorers were Danny Fort with 15 points and Darrick Scott with nine points. For Ballenger, the high scorer was Brian Kidd with six points.

LIONS HAND VIKINGS' VARSITY FIRST DIVISION SETBACK - 02/12/03

Walkersville ended the first half with a one point lead and that remained the margin of victory, 29-28, in a hard-fought battle between MVAL rivals. Paul Crone, St. John's, led all scorers with 13 points while teammate Chris Davenport added seven. Eric Kemerer led Walkersville with eight points and 11 rebounds. Tyler Jordre contributed 16 rebounds for the winners.

The Lions also won the jayvee game 49-23. Kevin Jandovitz led Walkersville with 14 points, Alden Tuck chipped in with eight second-half points. Jonathan Hill had an excellent defensive game for the Lions. Brendan Engle led St John's with 10 points and Anthony Oliverio added five.

Catoctin's varsity defeated MSD 43-32, breaking out to a 10-point halftime lead with a strong second quarter. Derek Woelful and Bobby Groft had 13 points each for the Cougars. The Orioles, hard hit by a flu bug on campus, were paced by Scott Lehmann with 11 points.

TJ UPSETS WINDSOR KNOLLS, CREATES THREE-WAY TIE ATOP CMC - 02/09/03

TJ pulled off a 45-40 upset of Windsor Knolls' varsity to throw that CMC division race into a virtual three-way tie with three weeks to go. Neither team led by more than five points throughout the contest. Artez Smallwood led TJ with 16 points and Brandon Rascoe added 12. The Hawks were led by Mike Jarboe with 17 points and Brad Thompson chipped in with seven.

The Patriots also led the entire game in route to a 39-27 win in the jayvee game. TJ was led by Iman James with 12 points. The Hawks were paced by Erci Prochnow and Chris Patton with eight points apiece.

Poolesville's varsity edged Brunswick 43-39 in a closely-contested game. Jay Lowe led all scorers with 17 points for the Falcons. Matt Ray also netted seven points and hauled down seven rebounds. Wes Ketchum and Matt "Beef" Conley had a great defensive effort for the winners. Grant Wilson led Brunswick with 15 points and Evan Chaney added six.

Chris Cabrera fired in 20 points to lead the Falcons jayvees to a 38-32 victory. Austin Darling had 13 points to lead the Railroaders.

Linganore trimmed Oakdale 34-29 in varsity action. Zach Cratty and Jeremiah Cook had 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Lancers while Phil Monteau netted 13 in a losing cause.

Oakdale won it's first jayvee division game of the season in the prelim, 48-45. A.J. Thoreson had 12 points and Kevin Burkhardt added 10 for Oakdale. Vinnie Weaver had 12 poitns and Josh Mayne 10 for Linganore.

Middletown edged MSD in varsity play, 29-26. Patrick McCarrick had 12 points for the Knights and Scott Lehmann 14 for the Orioles.

WINDSOR KNOLLS VARSITY CLAIMS SOLE POSSESSION OF FIRST - 02/08/03

Windsor Knolls snapped Monocacy's 12-game varsity win streak and took over sole possession of first place in the CMC with a 48-41 victory. The Hawks jumped out to a 9-0 start and never trailed. Balanced scoring by the winners was led by Danny Mulhern with 10 points and Mike Jarboe with nine. Matty Foley led the Mustangs with 17 points and Gideon Obamyami had 13. Monocacy's downfall was the foul line where they hit just 4-of-12.

The Mustangs' jayvees broke away from a 9-9 dealock with a 10-0 run and went on to win 47-32. Danny Foit led the Mustangs with 16 points while Denzel Randolph and Darrick Scott added nine and eight points, respectively.

Ballenger Creek's varsity exploded to a 25-6 first-quarter lead and held off TJ 65-47 by netting 13 of 19 free throws in the fourth quarter. Ballenger was led by Kevin Henry with 20 points. Luis Machado added 11 and Daniel Shannon contributed 10 for the Bulldogs. TJ was led by Brandon Rascoe with 15 points and Jabari Brown with 11.

The Bulldogs limited TJ to just six points in the first half in taking the jayvee game 32-26. The lead was 17-6 at that point. Mikey Leizear paced the winners with 10 points and Brian Kidd offered eight. Guy Barnes and Iman James each had eight points for TJ.

James McCollum and Jason Kramek had 13 points apiece to lead Poolesville to a 50-26 varsity win over host Glenwood. Nick Marshall had 11 points for the Gladiators.

Poolesville also won the jayvee game 58-30 behind 24 points from Mark Fales. Phil Ashtianie was high man for Glenwood with 11 markers.

Middletown used a strong defense to down Catoctin's varsity 47-28. Josh Meikrantz led the Knights with 16 points and Pat McCarrick poured in 10 points to help the Middletown cause. Catoctin was led by Josh Chmelik's nine points.

The Knights survived a strong second half by the Cougars to win the jayvee game 33-27. Middletown led 18-4 at the half, only to have Catoctin rally back in the second have with 23 points after intermission. Michael Oursler was the high Knight with eight points. Catoctin was lead by Matty Thompson with 11 tallies. Middletown made 10 of 16 attempts from the foul line to protect the lead.

MONOCACY, BALLENGER, TJ TAKE TWINBILLS - 02/06/03

Matty Foley ripped the nets for 23 points and Gideon Obamwonyi added 16 as Monocacy's varsity downed Oakdale 51-37. Phil Monteau had 14 points for Oakdale and Robert Bennett contributed 10 points.

Monacacy's jayvee raced to a 20-3 first quarter lead and maintained it for a 38-22 victory. They were led by Denzel Randolph with 14 points. Oakdale had seven players score, led by A.J. Thoreson’s five points.

Ballenger Creek took a 21-3 varsity lead after one quarter and never looked back in handing Linganore a 63-15 setback. Ballenger was led by Kevin Henry with 16 points, Luiz Machado with 13 points and A.J. Gardner with 10 points. Jeremiah Cook was tops for the Lancers with six points.

The Bulldogs' jayvees rallied from a 23-16 halftime deficit to win the prelim 48-42. A 20-3 run in the third quarter was the difference. Ballenger got 14 points from Kirk Fox, 12 from Brian Kidd and 10 from Mikey Leizear. Linganore was led by Josh Mayne with 18 points and Vince Weaver with 14 points.

Brandon Rascoe had 18 points, Artez Smallwod 14 and Jabari Brown and Sean Rascoe 10 each as TJ overwhelmed Glenwood 74-9. TJ led 20-0 after one quarter and 36-3 at the half. The Gladiators were led by Tim Karsner with five points.

Glenwood jumped out to a 5-0 jayvee lead, but it was all TJ from that point on as the Patriots claimed a 49-21 victory. It was 22-14 at the half. Steven Powell played well with his first start of the year with five points for TJ. Ian Hahn led the Pats with 11 points, Donald Dawson had eight points and seven steals. Glenwood was led by Phil Ashtianie with 11 points.

LIONS TURN BACK 'ROADERS, FALCONS FLY PAST ORIOLES - 02/05/03

Walkersville held off a late rally by Brunswick to clinch a 33-29 varsity win. Walkersville's Bruce Gaines led all scorers with 14 points. Teammate Eric Kemerer added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Grant Wilson led Brunswick with 13 points, including six in the final quarter.

The Lions also won the jayvee contest 41-15. Kevin Jandovitz led Walkersville with 10 points. Dan McCullough added eight points and played well on defense. Alan Etzler had an excellent second half performance for the Lions. Brunswick was led by Houston Darling with five points and Nathan Smith with three.

Poolesville scored the game's first eight points and went on to register a 40-29 triumph over MSD. Jay Lowe had eight points for the winners while Kevin Berrigan notched 10 points and Scott Lehmann 13 for MSD.

WALKERSVILLE PULLS AWAY FROM MSD - 02/03/03

Walkersville doubled up MSD by a 12-6 count in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 38-31 victory. The Lions, who took a 26-25 lead into the final quarter, got a team-high 10 points from Daniel Mowrey. Daniel Fava had 13 points and Kevin Berrigan added 12 to lead the Orioles.

POOLESVILLE, BRUNSWICK WIN JAYVEE OVERTIME THRILLERS - 02/02/03

Marcus Prince hit three clutch free throws to send the game into overtime and Poolesville went on to nip Windsor Knolls 44-42 in two extra periods. The Hawks led by three points with just five seconds left in regulation before Prince was fouled on a three-point attempt. He netted all three and finished with 10 points. Joe Miller was tops for the winners with 16 markers. Andrew Stephens pace WK with 14 points and Adam Klink added seven. Jamie Lowe and Kevin Sowers had great efforts in the loss.

Windsor Knolls won the varsity game as Mike Jarboe had points and played his best all-around game of the season. Mike Mullikin had Dave Andrews each had six points as all of WK players scored. Mike Webber and Matt Conley each had eight points each for Poolsville.

Brunswick's jayvees stormed back from a 14-point halftime deficit and upset TJ 62-58 in overtime. Trailing 29-15 at intermission, the Railroaders used a 16-4 burst in the third quarter to get back in the game. Austin Darling led three Brunswick players in double figures with 17 points. Andrew Simpson offered up 12 points and Kyle Foltz had 11. TJ had four players in double digits - Donald Dawson (16), Ian Hahn (13), Steven Chase (11) and Stephon Morris (11).

TJ rolled to a 66-26 win in the nightcap. Artez Smallwood had 18 points and Brandon Rascoe 16 for the winners. Grant Wilson led Brunswick with 12 points.

Monocacy's varsity handed Ballenger Creek it's first loss in the last two years to a team other than Windsor Knolls, topping the Bulldogs 49-44. Matty Foley led the Mustangs with 18 points. Gideon Obamyami had 12, Taylor Hubbard and Scott Gilson six apiece. The Bulldogs were paced by Daniel Shannon, who nailed five three-pointers. Kevin Henry and Dante Stansbury had six points each.

The 'Stangs also won the jayvee game by a 48-27 margin. Denzel Randolph had 16 for the Mustangs and Dan Foit added 12. Roy Comer had an excellent outing with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Kirk Fox led Ballenger with eight points.

West Frederick downed St. John's varsity 62-28 in a fast-paced game. The Cadets were led by the scoring of Travon Vann with 12 points, Steve Curtis with 11 and Q'Monte Matheny with 10 points. The Vikings got 15 points from Paul Crone.

Jimmy Lanning poured in 20 points as the Cadets won the prelim 46-11. Brendan Engle had four points for the Vikings.

Middletown defeated Oakdale's varsity 38-20, despite shooting only 13 for 33 from the foul line. Josh Meikrantz had 12 and Ryan Gilligan had 11 for Middletown. Chris Bryant tallied six points for Oakdale.

The Knights won the javyee game 44-30. No additional details were made available.

Walkersville's varsity defeated Linganore 43-35 behind a 10-point effort from Tyler Jordre. Zach Cratty netted eight points and Jeremiah Cook seven for the Lancers.

Vinne Weaver knocked down 17 points and Greg Herrick added eight as Linganore won the jayvee game 58-31. Kevin Jandovitz had a team-high 13 points for Walkersville.

TOP DOGS IN CMC KEEP BARKING - 02/01/03

West Frederick bolted to a 32-12 lead by halftime and coasted to a 58-30 varsity win against Middletown. Steven Custis led the Cadets with 12 points while Anthony Walker and Q'Monte Matheny contributed nine points each. Josh Meikrantz and Ty Main had six points apiece to lead the Knights.

The Cadets also started quick in the jayvee game, taking a 19-5 halftime lead and maintaining it for a 37-23 victory. Larry Bowens and Ernest Woods collected 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the winners. Michael Riggin had 12 numbers for Middletown.

Monocacy gained a 45-34 varsity win over Walkersville as Matty Foley had 19 points and Gideon Obamyami added 10. Ryan Nusbaum had eight points to lead the Lions effort.

The jayvee 'Stangs defeated the Lions 43-24. Darrick Scott had seven points and Dan Foit six for Monocacy while Anthony Cook led the Lions with five points.

Ballenger Creek ran past Glenwood 83-28 in varsity play. Luis Machado netted 18 points and Kevin Henry added 17 for BC. Nick Marshall tallied 15 points for the Gladiators.

The Bulldogs had a tougher time in the jayvee game before earning a 47-32 victory. Brian Kidd had 14 points to pace the winners and Phil Ashtianie collected 12 points in a losing cause.

Catoctin broke away from a 13-13 at the half to defeat Linganore's varsity. Brian Woodward led the Cougars' scoring 11 points and Ron "The Bus" Terpko added 10. Jeremiah Cook had an outstanding game for the Lancers with 20 points.

Vince Weaver and Josh Mayne led nine Lancers scorers with 16 and 10 points, respectfully, as Linganore won the jayvee game 49-21. Matty Thompson was the high Cougars' scorer with 11 points.

Chris Davenport netted 15 points and Paul Crone 13 as the St. John's varsity edged Oakdale 37-35. Chris Bryant led Oakdale with nine points.

Paced by Riley Cook’s 13 points, Oakdale's jayvees defeated St. John’s 36-15. St. John’s was 13-of-24 from the foul line, Oakdale 4-of-9.

BALLENGER ROLLS AGAINST CATOCTIN, TJ TOPS MSD - 01/30/03

Ballenger Creek jumped out to a 24-3 first quarter lead and never looked back in a 85-21 varsity win over Catoctin. Ballenger was led by Daniel Shannon with 17 points, Kevin Henry and A.J. Gardner with 13 each and Luis Machado with 12 points. Catoctin was led by Brian Woodward with six points.

The Bulldogs won the jayvee game 48-20 as Brian Kidd had 14 points, Tyler Rakich and Jordan Borek contributed six apiece. For Catoctin, Zach Little tallied six point and Matty Thompson added five.

TJ got 16 points from Artez Smallwood and 14 from Brandon Rascoe in a 57-30 varsity win against MSD. Sean Rascoe also had nine points for the winners. MSD was led by Scott Lehman with nine points and Brandon McMillan with eight.

HAWKS CLAW LIONS, ORIOLES OUTLAST LANCERS - 01/29/03

Windsor Knolls jumped out to an early lead and coasted to a 32-16 varsity win over Walkersville. It was a defensive battle throughout, with Danny Mulhern leading all scorers with six points for the Hawks. Brad Thompson and Mike Jarboe kicked in five each for the victors. Ryan Nusbaum led Walkersville with three points down the stretch.

Walkersville was down 22-13 at the half in the jayvee game and came back with 34 second-half points, but fell two shy in a 49-47 decision. Andrew Stephens led Windsor Knolls with 15 points, followed by Chris Patton and Adam Kirk with 13 and 12. Chad Benford led Walkersville with 14 points, including three consecutive foul shots with under a minute to play after being fouled on a three-point attempt. Dan McCollough had 11 points while Kevin Jandovitz added nine for the Lions.

MSD rallied from an 18-13 deficit to gain a 46-31 varsity victory against Linganore. A 24-9 run in third quarter was the deciding factor. Kevin Berrigan and Scott Lehmann paced the Orioles with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Jeremiah Cook had 13 for the Lancers, 10 in the first half.

MONOCACY STARTS, FINISHES STRONG AGAINST MSD - 01/27/03

Monocacy scored the game's first eight points and closed with a 14-7 margin in the fourth quarter to get by stubborn MSD 50-32 in varsity play. Gideon Obamwonyi's 22 points and strong inside play led the Mustangs and Matthew Foley contributed 10 points. Scott Lehman poured in 13 points and Kevin Berrigan 11 for MSD.

MUSTANGS, CADETS, HAWKS TAKE PAIR - 01/26/03

Time did not permit full capsules, but Monocacy, West Frederick and Windsor Knolls won doubleheaders.

The Mustangs defeated Poolesville 47-36 in the varsity game and 34-25 in the jayvee contest, West Frederick downed Oakdale by respective varsity and jayvee scores of 48-27 and 35-19, and Windsor Knolls was a 64-24 varsity winner and 45-22 prelim victor against Catoctin.

In other varsity play, St. John's downed Linganore 37-22 and Brunswick nipped Middletown 34-33 for it's first win of the season.

The Lancers topped St. John's 48-12 and Middletown bumped Brunswick 38-30 in other jayvee play.

TJ, WINDSOR KNOLLS, MONOCACY ARE DOUBLE WINNERS - 01/25/03

TJ's varsity scored the game's first 16 points and went on to defeat Middletown 51-27. The Patriots, who led 33-8 at the half, were led by Brandon Rascoe with 14 points, Sean Rascoe and Jabari Brown with 10 each and Artez Smallwood with eight points. Middletown was led by Patrick McCarrick with 14 points.

The Pats held off a late-charging Knight jayvee team for a 33-32 victory. The game was close throughout with TJ taking it's biggest lead at 30-23 before Middletown rallied. TJ got 12 points from Ian Hahn while Cory Campbell contributed eight points and 10 rebounds. Tops for Middletown was Michael Riggin with 14 points and Michael Oursler added 10 points.

Josh Hoyle had 13 points and Jeremiah Cook added 12 to lead Linganore to a 53-38 varsity win against Brunswick. Grant Wilson had 13 points and Daniel Rucker 11 in a losing cause.

Austin Darling was a one-man wrecking crew in the jayvee contest, pouring in 26 points and leading the Railroaders to a 45-40 triumph. Alex Phelps netted 11 points for Linganore.

Catoctin defeated visiting Oakdale 46-31 on the varsity level. The Cougars where led by Derek Woelfel's game-high 13 points. Brian Woodward poured in nine points to help the Cougar effort. Andrew Rhodes totalled eight points to lead Oakdale.

Oakdale pulled out a 29-26 win in the prelim, breaking away from a 20-20 deadlock after three periods. Riley Cook led the winners with nine points while Matty Thompson had a game-high 15 for the Cougars.

Q'Monte Matheny scored all 11 of his points in the second half to help West Frederick pull away for a 54-36 varsity win against MSD. The Cadets led by just three points at the half. Scott Lehmann had 16 points for the Orioles, 14 in the second half, while Daniel Fava added 10 points.

Jim Roche tallied 14 points and Danny Mulhern offered 12 as Windsor Knolls' varsity topped Glenwood 82-24. Nick Marshall led the Gladiators with 11 markers.

The Hawks also won the jayvee game, 53-36 behind Chris Patton's 12 points and ten from Tyler Murray. Phil Ashtianie had an outstanding performance for Glenwood with 21 points.

Matty Foley led all scorers with 23 points as Monocacy's varsity stymied St. John's 53-25. Chris Davenport had nine points for the Vikings.

Kevin Knauss had 18 points and Denzel Randolph contributed 13 as the jayvee Mustangs opened the day with a 56-9 victory. Brendan Engle led St Johns with six points.

BC RUNS AWAY FROM MSD - 01/23/03

The Ballenger Creek varsity defeated MSD 55-11. Ballenger was led by A.J. Gardner with nine points and Eric Muehl had seven points and nine rebounds. MSD was led by Scott Lehmann with seven points.

BALLENGER TACKS ON TWO AT WALKERSVILLE'S EXPENSE - 01/22/03

Ballenger Creek capitalized on first quarter pressure and never trailed in beating homestanding Walkersville's varsity 48-28. BC's Luis Machado led all scorers with 12 points, with teammate Daniel Shannon contributing nine. For Walkersville, Michael Voorhis led the scoring with nine points and Tyler Roberts added eight.

The Bulldogs also won the jayvee game by a count of 35-26. Ballenger was led by Tyler Rakich with 12 points and Mikey Leizar with eight. Walkersville got nine points from Kevin Jandovitz and Anthony Cook added five points. Alden Tuck had a good rebounding performance for the Lions.

FALCONS, KNIGHTS, MUSTANGS NAB TWO WINS EACH - 01/21/03

Marcus Prince and Mark Fales tallied 11 points each as Poolesville's jayvees defeated Oakdale 42-18. Kevin Burkhardt had eight points to lead Oakdale. Poolesville also won the varsity game 39-32 in overtime but no details were provided.

Middletown defeated Linganore's varsity as Pat McCarrick led all scorers with 14 points. The Knights also won the jayvee game 37-34 but no details were provided.

Monocacy downed Brunswick's varsity 55-34 as Matty Foley had 19 points and Gideon Obamwonyi added 18.

Denzel Randolph registered 19 points and Roy Comer added seven points and 12 rebounds as Monocacy won a jayvee matchup with Brunswick, 35-24. Austin Darling led the Railroaders with 14 points.

MIDDLETOWN, GLENWOOD JAYVEES PULL OFF THRILLING WINS - 01/20/03

Middletown's jayvee upset Monocacy 42-37 in overtime while Monocacy won the varsity matchup 47-21. No details were provided on either game.

Glenwood's jayvees also trimmed Oakdale 44-43. Only the score was provided. Oakdale won the varsity team 37-24 as Andrew Rhodes, Phil Monteau and Alex Hallfors all had eight points. Nick Marshall led the Gladiators with six points and Ross Leonhart notched five points.

Poolesville raced to a 21-4 first quarter advantage and dumped Linganore's varsity 50-26. Poolesville's Jason Kramek led all scorers with a season-high nine points. Matt Conley contributed eight points and seven rebounds for the Falcons Matt Ray added seven points and six rebounds. Zach Cratty and Jeremiah Cook led Linganore with seven points each.

The Falcons never trailed in winning the jayvee game 48-38. The Poolesville attack was again paced by Chris Cabrera, who led the Falcons with game-high totals of 15 points, six rebounds and four assists. Marcus Prince also played a key role by contributing 13 points. Linganore rallied in the fourth quarter behind the hot shooting of Vinnie Weaver (20 points and four three-pointers). Dale Carnahan helped to seal the Falcon win with a long three-pointer during Linganore's final comeback attempt.

Luis Machado scored a team-high 14 points and Kevin Henry posted 11 as Ballenger Creek Creek outlasted St. John's in varsity action 55-32. The Vikings were led by the scoring of Paul Crone with 13 points.

Ballenger Creek won the jayvee game 33-20. Brian Kidd netted 10 points for the winners. Brendan Engle had nine for St. John's.

Windsor Knolls defeated Brunswick's varsity 84-19 with Jim Roche totaling 17 points, Mike Mullikin and Brad Thompson 16 each. Brunswick got 13 points from Grant Wilson.

The Hawks broke the jayvee game open with a 14-5 spurt in the second quarter and went on to win 47-25. Andrew Stephens had 11 points for the winners while Andrew Simpson had six points in a losing cause.
