Where Can I Get Information?

Write to the Appalachian Trail Conference, P.O. Box 807, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425, USA. Or call them at (304) 535-6331 if the information you are looking for is not on the ATC Home Page (which went up on February 24, 1997.

In April '95, the ATC got a first email address. As of early '97, they have a variety of different addresses. If you want to write to a particular person at the ATC, use the person's first initial and last name (no spaces) followed by @atconf.org (Please include your snailmail address when writing.)

You can also visit the headquarters in person if you live in the Harpers Ferry area or are planning to visit. (BTW - it's an easy 60 mile walk or bike ride from Washington, D.C. - just leave town on the C & O Towpath and at about the 60 mile marker, you'll be just across the river from Harpers Ferry.) The A.T.C. is on the corner of Washington and Jackson Streets, up the hill from the main part of town. The Store is open Monday through Friday from 9 to 5, except on holidays. It's also open on weekends during the height of the hiking season between May and October. There's a large raised map of the A.T. in the headquarters, as well as photo albums of thru-hikers that have stopped at the HQ to have their pictures taken. Former thru-hiker Laurie Potteiger will be there to help you with any questions that you may have,

And if you have an hour or two to spare, there's usually some volunteer work that needs to be done - folding t-shirts or helping to put information packets or guidebook sets together - or maybe something else altogether.

If you write and ask for information, it would be nice if you enclosed a small donation to help defray the costs. The standard packet of information which you will be sent costs about $1 just for postage. This will likely include a booklet entitled, "Walking the A.T. Step by Step," a catalog of books, maps, t-shirts and other A.T. related items that are available for purchase through the mail and an Appalachian Trail Conference brochure.
