A Example of "Excessive" Graphics

Note:
This page was created for use in my former classes. It is only occasionally updated resulting in many links being more of historical rather than current usefulness. Over time many links will suffer link rot.

In 1876, an internal memo was circulated at Western Union about a newly invented device.
"This 'telephone' has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication.
The device is inherently of no value to us."

Kovacs Family Picture Page
http://www.kovacs.com/FamilyStuff/pets.html

This is an example of using full size inline images rather than using small snapshots or thumbnail graphics and linking to the full size versions.

An examination of the page with Doctor HTML reveals:
The text and HTML commands of the document take up 6.2 K.
The total number of bytes in images found on your web page is 4060.5 K.
The total number of bytes transferred while loading the page is 4066.7 K.
This will take approximately 2313.5 seconds to load over a 14.4kbps modem! [42 min]
[21 min @ 28.8 or 9.5 @ 56]

HTML Editor Choosing the Right Tool For the Right Job
http://www.millkern.com/mohnkern/faq/html.html

This is another example of using full size inline images.

An examination of the page with Doctor HTML reveals:
The text and HTML commands of the document take up 21.2 K.
The total number of bytes in images found on the web page is 2375.7 K.
The largest image is webwiz6.jpg at 207.489 K
The total number of bytes transferred while loading the page is 2396.9 K.
This will take approximately 12 minutes to load over a 28.8 kbps modem!

Compare this with Adding Images to Your Site from Philip and Alex's Guide to Web Publishing. The sunset image at the top of the page is a "thumb nail" image of 8.6 K which is linked to a larger version at 78 K. At the bottom of the larger image is a link to a 1000x1500 pixel version [224 K] .
