2009/2010 Season Is Coming!

Coaches and Coordinators

The New Web Site Is Live! Just click on the link below for Updates. Don't forget to save it to your favorites!

There are still two or three schedule problems to be worked out but if there is still another glitsch out there, please let me know. Thanks for your attendance last week at the meeting and for everything else you do.

WEBSITE...Rosters can go directly to Ralph Hackney at midmarylandgirls@gmail.com. To put those original team pictures on the website Ralph is willing to go to your gym and take the pictures. He can take additional pictures, of teams and of individuals and create "teammates" and other packages at reasonable cost to the girls and families but that shot for the web is at no cost. Hard to turn down. If you have a commercial photographer doing your work or a parent and the picture can be sent to Ralph electronically, that will work too. Same goes for action shots during the season that you would like to see on the website. I have attached a copy of a waiver the Catoctin association uses for its track program. Feel free to adapt it any way you need to or you may be using something similar already.

Important Tryout Notice: Once you have completed your respective Mid-Maryland Girls JV and Varsity Team Tryouts, please let any players that did not make your Team know that if they are serious about playing Mid-Maryland Basketball this season, we are going to be holding a 2nd tryout for the St. John's Lady Vikings.

Here's the first draft of the season's schedule. Once the boys' schedule became available things fell in place. As it stands now there are 23 doubleheaders (boys and girls' game involving the same two organizations). That last week in February is deliberately light and is meant to catch schedule conflicts and weather problems. Please don't use it now for convenience. There are inevitably conflicts, so please let me know about them with possible solutions. First rule.... you only change your home games and think about what it's doing to the other team e.g how many games will they then have that week and travel time for a weeknight game. The mailing list is weak...please let me know names that should be added and some that may as well be scrapped. If the playing sites are wrong, tell me the correct ones. Same with directions to the gyms. And it's never too early to give playing times if you know them. We have a new web master, Ralph Hackney from the Catoctin/Thurmont organization. Todd Mazzie is helping Ralph with a new website and it will take a while setting it up. Until then, I can handle schedule changes and the additional information. As soon as a meeting date is available, you'll have it. Doubling up with the boys' meeting is working and I'll ask that this be continued. Looking forward to the 2009-2010 season!
Jim Shannon

Please all write ups with one email.
We have found someone to take over the duties of Web Master. Ralph Hackney is our new Web Master. Please show him the same respect as you did Todd Mazzie. Todd will still be assisting Ralph in the turn over of our new web site.

All Directors Coaches and parents (helping with write-ups), please specify score, the organization you represent, in the actual email (not The Subject Line), and please one email for Jayvee and Varsity Game, see "Notes to:" below for any questions.
Thank You Ralph Hackney/Todd Mazzie

Note: Linganore has a new location for home games, Linganore/Oakdale High School (L/OHS). Please click the "Directions to the Games" to the right. Thanks!

Notes to: Directors, Coaches, Parents and Players.

One, if your player must wear a t-shirt under their jersey it must match the dominant color. Example if home teams dominant color for that game is white you must have a white t-shirt, if your away dominant color is teal you must have a teal colored t-shirt.

Two, your scorebook will be filled out and ready 10 minutes prior to start of game, no excuses. Also, Do not use the numbers from the web page they could be wrong! Please check and compare with opposing team before official book is signed by the officials.

Three, we follow the Maryland High School Girls Basketball Rules and Mid-Maryland Girls Basketball have some exceptions to these rules (Home Page of Web, MM Rules Summary). Coaches need to know all rules and exceptions in order to serve their players best. Officials are not going to ignore rules and will intervene. As coaches and coordinators we also have an obligation to learn and understand the basic rules under which our players must play. Please know the rules or ask before the start of games. This will help avoid any conflict during the season.

Four, Please show up 30 minutes prior to your specified game time. All of the home teams only have gyms rented for specific times. We are also having problems with food in the High School Gyms. No Food and Drinks in Gyms, unless otherwise noted. Thank You, your Web Master.

Five, I need your assistance in some aspects of your game reports. As stated previously, the home team is required to file game summaries/scores after each game. The league is only as good as our web site, so please try to file more concise scores and game recap information.
These recaps are important for the players and their parents to see online, but they are the most time-consuming of the web updates that we have to make. The closer we get them to straight "copy/paste", the better. So here are a few requests that will save time and keep the page consistent:
- report the first and last names of players. They are all listed on the online rosters and it only takes you a minute to look them up rather than me having to do it for every game reported. Last names only are rude. I don't particularly like being called "Shannon" and it sure isn't proper for a 13-14 year-old.
- write out all "numbers" less than 10 - i.e. seven, eight, etc.
- use upper and lower case, no ALL CAPS.
- and some are still providing no details (scoring or otherwise) for the opposing team. This is totally unacceptable and unsportsmanlike. We need final scores, game highlights (if possible) and high scorers and/or rebounders for both teams. This is for the kids, so provide as much info as you can within reason, and please use proper grammar!
Finally, please coordinate your reports so that both game summaries/scores come to us on the same email. Our webmaster spent five hours going through all of the reports and coordinating which reports were missing. This is an unnecessary waste of time for someone who is a volunteer. We will be looking for a new web master if we cannot coordinate the submittals of our game summaries/scores.
Some of you are doing an excellent job and We appreciate that, as do the players and parents. For those that can take an extra minute or so to sharpen up their reports, please do so. It makes a huge difference.

Again "Welcome" and lets make this a safe and an enjoyable season for all.
